The Nation’s Fighters
Depend on the Telephone
The telephone business was among the
first to be called on for unusual service in
the war.
All over the country the important rail
road points, the bridges, the big grain ele
vators, munition factories and water-supply
systems have been guarded, first by detach
ments of the national guard and now by
private watchmen.
This need is requiring special telephone
service, and the total amount of telephone
work to provide it is enormous.
The call to arms brought to the Bell Tele
phone System imperative duties and respon
sibilities.
No nation entered the war with any
where near the number of skilled telephone
men, or as dependable and comprehensive
telephone service as this country possessed.
More than 6,800 former Bell Telephone
employees are now in some branch of the
military service in Europe, or in training
camps here.

The meeting was called for the pur

annual Financial Statement of Recor
der McVicar.
Upon motion of Trustee Madson, sec

published.
An election board to serve at the

nish the skilled telephone men the govern
ment needed in the army signal corps.
When the war came, telephone plants had
to be built or enlarged at all the army posts,
training camps, navy yards and department
headquarters. Similar telephone systems
have had to be installed in the American
training camps, army headquarters, hospi
tals, etc., in Europe.
In addition to the military demands for
telephone service, business activity, acceler
ated and increased by the war, has required
enormous amounts of telephone service and
equipment.
