What Good? A correspondent, writing from Sel ma, Ala., inclosing ten dollors for The Democrat, to be sent to certain par ties, concludes his letter as follows: But what good will Northern De mocracy do us at the South ? We are anxious to know. Truly your friend. W. -We will answer our correspon dent in full when he will tell us what good Northern Republicanism has done the people of the South! Or we will answer him when lie will tell us what sense there was in the Southern delegates in 1868, when they assembled in New York to nominate a Democrat ic candidate for the Presidency, to cast .sixty-five votes for Andrew Johnson, and persistently keeping up this s- strategy thereby defeating the choice of the West, and the only man the Democrats could have elected at that time? But conundrums on sacred snljects are hardly allowable, so we will not ask them. - "What will Northern Democracy do for the South t" We can tell you what we would do, and in a very few - words, We would give every State in the Union the right to regulate her own affairs in her own way. We would withdraw the bayonets of an infamous administration from the throats of a people who long since have given up an unequal contest, and are now anx ious to restore their land to its great ness. We would give to the people of the Southern States-for States we still consider them, no matter whether the administration does or not-the right to send Northern thieves armed with carpet-bags, searching for spoons, and industriously engaged in promoting discord and strife, back to their homes in the North, or to workshops where theg properly belong, and where un Sder earnest discipline" they could be Smade useful citizens. We would give to every one of the Southern States-as everywhere else the right to employ such labor as the wisdom of the State saw fit leaving it to the wisdom of the people, and the making of laws which would bring to r the State that class of laborers requir Sed to develop. the resources of the State and add to her greatness and prosperity. We would allow the people ot the South to honor teir fallen heroes-to plant flowers over the graves of their ,*T loved ones-enjoy their opinions as we enjoy ours-and by liberal, honest l~swaintended more to unite States in a common brotherhood than to excite petty jealousies endeavor to make this a free, happy, prosperous, and united country. We would give to the States of the South the same right to legislate upon local matters as they had before the w" .-the right to elect their represen tativt men to Congress, that the peo i. " ple of the North might know the senti ntentf the Southern people, and that te' country, generally might not be t cursed with the presence in legislative h-alls of men who know nothing of `-· i.'rinciple, nothing of the wants of the -'peoplenqthing of the resources of the country. nothing .of the sentiment of 4 thr onstituency, but who are given plaes.of power and profit at thi ex pense of the people, by and' through '`th1 power of an administration that cares more for the protection of an aristocracy and the creation of a des pogism than it does for perptuatin~g the liberties given us bty patriotic sires who fought side by side for American independence. We would make taxation equal, that those in the South earnestly striving to add to the enterprises of the country and wipe osit the sad traces of an une qual contest, might not 'be .compelled to ltlieir earnings for years for the benefit of an aristocracy existing prin cipally ip New Englund and foreign countries. We wouTd clean out the centralized power at Washington-aid in the elec tion of representative men-put a stop to the extravagance which is robbing the people for the benefit of bondhol ders, monopolists. and speculators would withdraw the army of tlhieves, in the shape of Federal officcholders, from the South, and put none but hon eat men in office, and endeavor to manage the affairs of tlie Government for the benefit of those who are earn .estly striving to mnake the country gleat and prosperous. -Wi speak, perhaps for as many Democr~ts as any editor in the coun .3rfiwe mnay judge from the circula tionapf our paper. We speak for the ea~egiitness of that Northern Democra S cy hvhllih hopes at no distant day to " "i-- g from this chaos and political .... bhneess something which will bene S the nation, etcourage industry and promote the interests of the people. We lmve told our correspondent sometlhtg f what Worthern Democra cy woiliAo for ithe South. We leave / it with the people of the South to de cide whether they will work with Northern Democracy for the naecom plifbnent of this purpose, or submit t. to bq. the Republicans who have s .overy promise made the N l .[-SPomeroy's Demo aIrnD TO HENRY ST.
