NATIONAL WHIG. For the National Whig. HARPKR'S ferry. The scenery at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, is perhaps the most picturesque in the Uni ted States. The view of this delightful spot from the summit of the Blue Ridge, is en chanting. Lofty and difficult of access as the top of the Kidge proves to the uninitia ted the grandeur of the scene below fully com pen-nates the adventurer for his trouble, immediately beneath your feet rolls the Po tomac aud Sheuandoah, encircling in their folds the beautiful village of Harper's Ferry; then forming a junction, their waters flow on in silent beauty until lost amid the gorges of the distant mountains. Far in the dis tance are seen a succession of woody plains, diversified with farm-houses and villages, gradually growing more and more indistinct, until they fade away into the summits of the Alleghanies. Mr. Jefferson, in his bril liant description of this scene, says: " The passage of the Potomac through the Blue llidge is, perhaps, one ot the most stupendous scenes in nature. ^ ou stand on a very high point of land; on your righl comes up the Shenandoah, having ranged along the foot of the mountains a hundred miles, to seek a vent ; on your left approach es the Potomac, in quest of a passage also; in the moment of their junction they rush together against the mountain, rend it asun der, and pass off to the sea. 1 he lirst glance of this scene hurries our senses into the opinion that the mountains were formed first; that the rivers began to flow after wards; that, in this place particularly, they have been dammed up by the Blue Hidge of mountains, and have formed an ocean which rilled the whole valley; that, continuing to lise, they have at length broken over at this spot, and have torn the mountain down from its summit to its base. The piles of rock on each hand, but particularly on the She nandoah?the evident marks of their dis ruption and evulsion from their beds by the most powerful agents ot nature, corrobora ting the impression. But the distant finish ing which nature has given to the picture is of a very dillerent character; it is a true contrast to the foreground; it is as placid and delightful as that is wild and tremen dous; for the mountain being cloven asun der, she presents to your eye, through the cleft, a siiiall closet of smooth blue horizon, at an infinite distance in the plain country, inviting you as it were from the riot and tumult roaring around, to pass through the breach, and participate in the calm below. Here the eye ultimately composes itself, und that way too the road happens actually to lead. You cross the Potomac just above its junction, pass along its side through the base of the mountain for three miles, its terrible precipices hanging over you, and within about twenty miles reach Frederick town, and th? fine country round that. This scene is worth a voyage across the Atlantic." Enthusiastic as Jefferson is in this descrip tion, he does not exceed the truth. Foreign ers have borne ample testimony to the splen dor of the prospect from the lop ot the ridge at Harper's Ferry, admitting that there are few scenes in Europe which surpass it. It is time to do justice to American scenery Hundreds of our citizens annually cross the Atlantic, for the purpose of visiting the sce uery of Europe, under the mistaken suppo sition that their own countn nil 'ills nothing to compensate them tor the uouble of a visit. This ignorance is less general than formerly, but it still prevails to a considerable extent; yet no country affords finer or more mag nificent scenery than America. -"Go op the Hudson, travel along the banks of the Sus quehanna, cross the Alleghanies, or ascend the Catskill; loiter over the fairy-like wa-, .ters of Lake Huron, and you will cease to | believe that America affouls no scenciy to rewHi'd the traveller- V\ e sa_\ nothing ol Niagara, or Tteulon falls, or ol the moun tain scenery scattered all over the south. We say nothing of the vast prairies of the -west, of the boundless melancholy expanse of the Mississippi, of the magnificent sce nery on the route to St. Anthony's fulls. Let our people visit these before going abroad. Let them learn to do justice to the country of their birth. G. M. Charles A. Wicklifle, Tyler's Postmaster General, is earning an unenviable notoriety in the canvass for Congress in his distric t. The Whigs have pinned upon hiin.tlnit, in the law* war, he sold bis dirty hunting shirt to a poor volunteer for $2. This hunting-shirt business sticks to him like the shirt of one Major Ne.^sua, in old times. The New Orleans National ii> apprehensive lest General Scott's column will be cut off When he moves on to the capital he will leave in fiis rear 100,000 people, and find 300,000 ready to receive him. 11 disaster does not befal our little invading army, it will not be for any pains taken by the administration to prevent it. Blackwood's Magazine being an exact fac-siinilie of tbe Edinburgh edition. The wide-spread fame of these splendid peri odicals rendeis it needless to say much in their praise. As literary organs, they stand far in ad- J vancc of any works of a similar stamp now pub- j lished, while the political complexion of each is ! marked by a dignity, candor, and forbearance, not often found in works of a party character. They embrace the views of the three great parties in England?Whig, Tory, and Radical.
