lUA I „ t „ , - LEOXARDTOWN, - - - MD. Advertising, Very Low Rate*, Up-to-date JOB PRINTING, o / 1 A. F. KING. Editor and Publisher h i About Growing Tobacco Mr. Editor; Dear Sir:—Forty eight years ago * I began the work of growing tobacco. J After a few years I decided, or rather discovered, that there were certain { days better that others for catting ( tobacco in order for it to cure up nicely and have a “heavy body” and i be o4ly and “waxy.” 1 / To explain, I’ll say that tobacco' has a sap just as a tree, and tobacco . also has at intervals an oily sub- • stance, which is its natural posses sion. When the sap, or water rises • in tobacco it pushes out the oil through the pores of the leaves on the principle that oil and water ] won’t mix, and tobacco out in this state will be light and “chaffy” when cured. From the fact that \ sap pushes the oil out of tobacco is why it Is so “gummy” at certain 1 times and will barely stain your : hands at other times. j (,? - • But out tobacco when full of oil • find it will cure up nicely and have * a “heavy body” and be oily and “waxy.” When tobacco is full of j oil and it csMsot evaporate as sap’ does in' curing, therefore, the tobac- . co is compelled to be rich and heavy i § Fanners have experienced cutting tobacco one week and do weH with it, and then again the next week and off of the same piece of ground | and have altogether different luck. If any of the farmers will write and send a stamp for reply, I’ll be pleas- y ed to wi ite to them upon this matter. Yours truly, j Da sun. V. Davis, £ Advance, N. C. E. F. D. a. Alfalfa an tha Shall Lands. In Southern Maryland perhaps the most valuable natural resource, next to the great wealth of sea food, is the millions of tons of oyster shells found Id one shape or another on land. In some places these shells are already mixed with the soil in sufficient quantity to make a true l!mi stone soil, which is dark brown or biaok. There is no difference chemically between ground oyster shells and ground limestone except that the shell Is somewhat purer. Whan dry and clean, oyster shells Is oyer 99 per cent carbonate of lime. Limestone varies between wide limits, some being over 90 per cent. •ort duido only 60 per cent. When ground shell or groun< )iaiffrtne or any other form of cei bonate of lime is mixed with decs) loir vegetable. matter the mixlur tun s bhok. Such soils, if they cue teln enough of the other Decesser minerals such as phosphate sod pot ash, ar. ideal for the growth of clc vers ar.d alfalfa. If the soil be olay loam it has plenty of potash but in the shell landa of Soutben Marvlor.d, where large oropsofhay grain and tobacco have been romov *d eacri year for centuries, there li nearly always a deficiency of pfaos post#. Alfalfa is a crop that grows bee . where phosphate is abundant and i removes large amounts of pbospbtU from the soil. Alfalfa will not do well withom inoculation, but in this respect ibt shell lands sre again fortunate, foi nearly everywhere 1 find lbs little wild alfalfa, black malic growing or them. Under tnean conditions with plan ty .f lime and inoculation intbeiioil, it would be cheaper to need a given piece i f land to alfalfa than to put the saute land in wheat and grass in the usual way, except tba as Inasmuch as the alfalfa ia expect dto remain for a aeries of year*, end to tield large crops every yea*, it will pty to invest liberally in the prepar.tion of the seed bed and phosphate so that the resulting bropt may be clear of weeds and thoroughly vigorous. Tb who expect to grow alfalfa should conduit the Demonstration Agent. G F. Wathen, J r., Loyevilie, who will bo glad to visit the place and give detailed advice about the work, send, fertilizer, etc. Adoost Stablxk. State Agent. John M. Talbert. I •< J. F.
