The colored schools of the county will close for the scholastic year on Friday. April 1 tth. Camalier left on ' Monday morning last to attend the April term of the Circuit Court for Prince George’s county, now ,n session at Upper Marlboro. Mrs. Deckel man, of the City- Hub Store, has left for Baltimore and New York to secure a new and attractive line of Spring and Sum mer millinery. See ad. in next issue. The new schedules of the Md., Del. A Va. fly. Co., (Potomac Kiver Line) went in effect April 3rd awl the Patuxent Kiver Line on April 4th. Both schedules appear in this issue. There will be an important meeting of all those interested in the formation of a civic league for Leonardtown on Tuesday, April 11th at the Court House, at 9:30 p. m. All, especially the ladies, are urged to attend. The Alumni Association of Leonard Hall will meet on Sunday at Bp.m. at the school. All gradu ate* and former pupils have been invited to come, as business of deep interest and importance will be transacted. The next lecture in tin- popular course will be given Saturday even ing at 7:3U o’clock in the Academy Hall by Brother Klias, of the Xaver iau Brothers. His subject will be “Paradise Lost.” The lecture will be illustrated. V/ Plans for a handsome dwelling have been prepared for the country home of Mr. and Mrs. Jefferson Combs. The dwelling is to be erected on Foxes’ Point, and over looks one of the most beautiful sec tions of Breton’s Bay. The record of Senator William F. Chesloy, St. Mary’s representa tive in the Senate, clearly shows that he labored for the good of the State and county, and demonstrated that he was looking to the public weal rather than any partisian ad vantage. The only regretable inci dent about this session’s work of the jovial Senator is that he is npt a Democrat. The Chaptico Farmers’ Club, at its recent meeting, unanimously adopted the report of the committee on organization of the County Fair, and appointed a committee to ascer tain the sentiment of the people in the district as to taking stock pro rata with other districts in the coun ty to the amount necessary to con duct a County Fair. Those present signed up for the amount of $56.0u, and feel sure they will have no trouble getting the required amount. It is hope that each district will co ooerate and vie with each other in making the fair a success. —• n-. —P— ■ Included in the General Appro priations Bill arc the following items for the instititions of St. .Mary’s County: St, Mary's Hospital, the sum of twenty-five hundred dollars for the year 1917 and a like sum for the year 1918; St. Mary’s Fe male Seminary, the sum of seven thousand dollars for the year 1917 and a like sum for 1918; Charlotte Hall Military Academy the sum of seven thousand dollars for 1917 ' a like sum for 1918. Mary's countia W'w..., rejoice to note that the bill carrying a #20,000 appropriation for Un building of the bridge to connect St. George’s Island with the main land, has, owing to the efforts of Senator Chesley, been passed, and is now up to the Governor for his signature. Senator Chesley should receive the greatful thanks of the Islanders, whose condition has been serious on account of the lack of this means of ingress and egress Miss Edith Holme*. The death of Miss Edith M, Holme . which OOCurod at Ht. Mary’s Hospital, Leonardtown on Sunday last cast spell of gloom over this entire section and Indeed throughout the county, where she was well and favorably known. Her ability as a teacher and her excellent character endeared her to a host of friends whose grief at her demise is most deep. Miss Edith was a most charitable and < hri .Han woman and commanded the respect and admiration of all witli whom site came in contact. Her life was well spent und her memory will long remain iu the hearts of tier schoolars and .friends. Her furneral took place from Ml. Aioy slus' Church, Leonardtown on Tuesday last and the largo concourse of sorrow ing friends, who accompanied her re mains to the eemetry and the flora; offerings she received attested the high esteem in which she wa- held. The funeral of Miss Edith M. Holmes on Tuesday morning was very im pressive. The pupils of tier school at Chaptico attended and show is) Heir esteem and affection for their beloved teacher so suddenly taken from them.
