Here is a ricture of the actual business
. . , . j
of war, tlra.vu by tne quaint ana power
ful rcDcil of Car) vie :
"What. sneafciiijs in quite nnofficial
laoguag'-.u the net t-urport and upshot of
war ? To my own knowledge, for exam
ple, tbero dwell and toil, iu the British
village of Dmndnirtg", usually, gome five
hundred souls. From tln-sc, by certain
"natural enemies" of tlio French, thero
are successively selected, during tho
French war, fay tlurtv ablo-bodiod men ;
Dumdnidge, at her own expense, has
suckled and nursed them; she baa not
without difficulty and sorrow, fed them
up to manhood, and even trained them
up to crafts, so that one can weave, an
other build, another hammer, and tne
weakest can stand nnder thirty stone
avoirdupois. Nevertheless, amid much
weeping and swearing, tbey are selected
all dressed in red, and shipped away, at
the public charge, some two thousand
miles, or say only to the south of Spain :
and fed thero till wanted. And now to
that same spot in the south of Spain, are
thirty similar French artisans from some
French Dumdrudse. in like manner
wending, till at length, after infinite effort,
the two parties come into accual juxtapo
sition ; and thirty stands fronting thirtyi
each with a sun in bis hand, straight
way the word "Fire 1 " is given, and
they blow the souls out of one another
and in tho place of sixty brisk, useful
craftsmen, the world has sixty dead car
casses, which it must bury, and anew shed
tears for. Had these men any quarrel
No 1 Busy as the Devil is, not the small
est 1 They lived far enough apart. Were
they entirely strangers? Nay; in bo
wide a Universe there was even, uncou
sciously, by commerce, some mutual help
fulness between them. How then ?
Simpleton ! their Governors had fallen
out ; and instead of shooting one anoth
er, had the cunning to make these poor
blockheads t-lioot. Alas ! so it is in our
land, and hitherto, in all other lands ;
still, as of old, what dcvilery soever Kings
do, the people must pay tho piper! "
Railroads.
We publish an article in another col
umn, from tho HVrfern Jo'trnnl of Com
merce, on rai'roads in Southern Kinsiis.
W do not indorse tho entire article, yet
the writer states somo facts that it would
be as well for our railroad man to examine.
We confess that we have but little faith
in the "Osage Valley and Southern Kan
las railroad scheme." : That a railroad
will be built in time from Leavenworth
via Lawrence, Fort Gibson to Galveston,
we do not doubt. Another will start at
Lawrence aud run to Fort Union, or Santa
Fe, N. M., and finally to the Pacific.
This will be the best paying road in Kan
sas for a long time to come. Another road
will commence at or near tho mouth of
the Kansas river, passing up that river to
Tike's Peak or Cherry Creek. These,
with the proper railroads iu Northern
Kansas, wilt bo tho railroads of Kansas.
Were the Neosho Valley railroad now
complete, and a railroad to Kansas City,
thence to Lawrence, ulso complete, we
could, with tho river competition, haul our
produce to Lawrence, and ship to Sr. bouis,
or via Leavenworth and Sr. Joseph and
Chicago, cheaper than we could the
Southern route. Wo have no f.iith, how
ever, in building a railroad from Kansas
City into- Southern Kansas, ignoring the
Kansas river towns. Lawrence is not
more than six or c'sht miles from an air
line from here, or Council Grove, to Kan
eas City, That Lawrence and Leaven
worth will content to such a road we do
Lot believe. The road should leave Law
rence for South-western Kansas, where
connections could be made with Kansas
City, Wyandott, Leavenworth, Atchison,
eta If Lawrence does not secure these
roads, the fanlt ia her own, and of some
of her lending men who fear to let the
road be built, for fear some one will make
money out of it. Kunsas Pres.

The fact is, there are yet some good bar

prospect this county a little and they will
find some as good land as the sun shines

Did the Be vena Feed Elijah T
Mr. Flint the Secretary of the Massa
chusetts Board of Agriculture, has added
a raven to the ornithological collection iu
the State Cabinet. So far as is known,
this is tne second specimen or this bird
which has ever been shot in Massachu
setts. Mr. Flint asserts that it is a lineal
descendant of the
"Stately ravens of the saintly days of yore,''
which fed Elijah, but is corrected by the
' Boston Journal, which asserts that modern
translators have discovered that Elijah
was fed by Arabs, and not by ravens.

The Lawrence Nursery
IS situated two miles west of Lawrence on the
Lawrence and Leeompton road, or perhaps
better known as the California road.
In offering our Trees for sale, we have hut a
few words to say. Partioularattention baa been
paid tn their cultivation, in order to keep them
in good shape for setting in orchard form. The
soil on which they are grown bi ing good and
worked deep, they are uncommonly well rooted,
havinga largeamountof fibrous roots.
We nave spared no pains in obtaining tbe beet
varieties of
SUMMER, FALL AND WINTER FRUIT. .
Especially those kinds that have been tested and
found to do well in the most Western States.
In ordor to prevent mistakes, we eut our scions
for grafting from old bearing trees, and we will
guarantee the kinds to be what we sell them fur.
Our trees have been raised on Kansas soil. and
are therefore much preferable to those from out
of the Territory, being much more certain of
living and making rapid growth, as we hare
learned bv our own experience.
Our trees are healthy, thrifty, and well grown,
and as such we offer theui to Fruit Growers at
cheaper rates, we think, than any other nursery
men.
All persons who wish to obtain Fruit Trees,
are invited to call and aeefor themselves, before
purchasing elsewhere,
