The congregation at the new Presbyter ian church is usually large, showing that the people of Lewiston are a church-going community when they have a suitable place for worship. Some of our citizens have commenced tin construction of sewers to carry slops and other foitl matter to the river from their premises. Jos. Masonic. —Several prominent Masons from abroad have been here during a few days past whose purpose was the formation of a Royal Arch Masons at this place. Mr. Mktvai.f of this city ha. constructed a larve ami ingeniously contrived wind mill for raising water on his premises on the bank of Clearwater near the Monteith & Snell saw mill. And yet it must be allowed by everybody «acquainted with tlie situation of these lands that trees and shrubs could he madl* to grow rapidly by the available means sol near at hand of irrigation from the Brearlv ditch. Instead of a fence enclosing it, amd green plots and thrifty trees, we have diy barren grounds and a cattle yard which is a dis grace to the public. Dklsol ys Biieaui.ey. — This was a case brought by the plaintiff to recover .a large amount of damages which he elliinied to have suffi -red by reason of the enlargement of a water ditch which was through a por tion of his farm. The ditch in q ivstiou is known as the "Lewiston water ditch" w hich passes through several farms beginn ing at the* Clearwater river, passiijg through this city and emptying into the Xijaku river. The ease was begun on Tuesday the 21st iust., and continued throughout six days. The ditch is about 4.JI miles ip lenglith and cost upwards of It was g< n erallv known that the land through which this ditch lies would be comparative I y val ueless without the means of irrigat ion from this ditch, and hence there was a great query in the minds of everybody as to w hat such damages could he. The jury was barged by the comt on Monday morning last and after having been out out day and one night they reported to the court that it was impossible for them to agree and were thereupon discharged. The cause of Brear ley vs Mulkey is now being trij*d, a jury having been 0111 pan m lied on Monday. II.
