T. matter where this terminal passenger and freight ststion may be ereeted, we propose to make it an ornament to yonr city, and ornament to the whole country, regardless of cost. [Applause.] We propose to build not only for pres ent use, but for use of com tig genera tions. [Applause.] We shall erect oPnamental structures ou a permanent Î ilan; that is, structures that are not ikely to be superceded for many years to come, and structures in harmony with the most approved artistic taste. It will take considerable time to carry out our plans in this respect. It may takeyeaip; but you will see the work going on undur your own eyes, and, therefore you will know that it is to be done. Now, as regards tho other enter Ç rises that we hare under completion, mentioned to the committee of the board of trade who awaited upon me on our arrival, that we thought of erecting a drydock here and of estab lishing large iron works. I am happy to say that the erection of a dry dock is decided upon. [Applause.] I have looked into the matter, and I think in - our interest as owners of so many steamships on the coast, it will be an advantageous investment. We do not vezpect at first to get much business from the general sailing trade, but it will come in due course of time. We think by having a dry-dock here we cm save to ourselves the exorbitant charges wo are obliged to pay in San Francisco. The iron works I felt sure will be esta lished, [Applause.] The details of the project are not yet fully matured. But it stands to reason that with the enormous transportation in terests that we are developing here, we need our own facilities in this coun try for rolling rails, for manufacturing every kind of iron that we may require as railroad, steamship and steamboat companion We muBt have facilities in addition to build cars, and also lo comstives in due co urse of time. In other words, with a view of economy, we must render ourselves as indepen dent as possible ot eastern manufac tore. And we mean to do so as early as practicable. Of course the estab lishment of iron works, such as we contemplate, we will be a great benefit to your city. It will bring a large ad ditional laboring population here—I hope of the very best kind. [Applause.] And I hope the establishment of thn-e industrial enterprises will bo but the boginning of the establishment of others. __ ▲ WJBDDXNCF IN WTOMINO. Camping near the town, we secured* our stock and then went in. Entering the leading store, I introduced myself to Mr. Stiles, one of the proprietors and postmaster. "It'e bow half-put 2, and at 8 there . to be a wedding down the street at Jonas Burton's. Old Jonu ia a rough old coon that we elected justieo of the pnaee about a month ago, and, as this will be bis first attempt at a marriage, I think we will see some fun. Come and ^go down with me." Wo went down to the old 'Squire's ^abin. We found him pouring over a •Marge volume of the statutes ot Wyom ing, swearing like a bores and looking **rribl, anxious. Alter greeting us be flid : ^ t "Stiles, the man that got up these jar laws hadn't gumption enough to f - gumption enough last him over night. I've run. through the blamed book n half dozen times, 'so onn't find a dod blasted word nbont matrimony, or how tbn bitchin' is pro ntoded with.^ IV« just got ter pnt the I on this couple, hit or miss, and m'l yoks '«a up legal I can't ilt." )b," said Stiles, "just do the best you can. Any kind of a ooramony will dgjnI this country, for people will nev «|»nk questions as to the legality of the thing. I'll post you well ns I can." Stiles then explained to him how he should proceed, and tbs old men thought he could worry through in tol erable shape. Ere long the oonple ap peared, followed by a crowd of the citi none of the camp. Tho candidates •tood, up before the 'squire, who began : ' Feller citiseos, this yer men an' this jrar woman have appeared before the eourt to be hitched in the legal business ef wedlock. The fees and costs were adjusted, and, aller receiving the congratulations of the assembly, the new-made husband and wife departed for their cabin on the creek. At a Newport dance the other night ha was introduced to a very modes' and bewitching girl, and so, of course, was doing his very best to merit his good luck. Feeling a sudden indispo sition, he excused himself for a min ute, and on returning was in the act of removing a few cloves from his vest pocket, when the damsel astonished him by saying : "Don't chew that; I'll rather smell the new rum." Encouraged Manufactures. It is laid that Milwaukee, though its manufactures, doubled its population in tourteen years, sud quintupled its capi pled its capital in the same period. Much the same is true of Fall River, qeosnse of it* extensive manufacturing interests. Minnespollis makes nearly the lame record. Here at Spokane Fells we have a water power superior to either that at Falls River or Min neapolis, sod whiie it is true, that tnis is a a new country, and its development only just begun, much may be done to start this place towards the same results as those attained through the manufac turing interests at the places above named. It is stated that the start in this direction at Minneappolis was msdo by a gift of one or tw > water* power sites to a capitalist. His ven ture induced others to locate eapitsl, and from that day there has been a continued, and rapid growth. Wo de rive a great many special benefits from the Northern Pacifie railway; shall no doubt have still greater railway facili ties, but these alone will not carry Spokan Falls to that degree of prosperi ty whioh eharaeterises the manufactur ing centers we have named. Indeed, beoause of our ra lway facilities, there is all the more reason for the invest ment of large capital in a manufactur ing interest. There is a large amount of idle capital in the northwest, and it does not seem that it ought to be diffi cult to induce a planting herein Spokane Falls.— S. Chronicle. Two Mormons were rotten-egged at Green Hill, Ohio, the other day, for uttering Words defamatory of Praident Garfield. It is indeed inspiriting every morning to see the crowds of milkmen wending their way ,towaid the city earnestly singing: "Shall we gather at the river?" And how sweet comes the reply from their luaty throats: Yes, we will gather at the river— The beautiful, tbs beautiful river— Gather svsry morn at tbs river And temper our milk on the sly.
