CITY AND COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER. The TELLER ha, the any paper in Sorlh Idaho THUKSDAY. largest circulation of, .....JAN. '.2, 1882 ____ THE QUESTION OF MORMONISM William Aldrich, Rreprnaentative from the first district of Illinois, is the chairman of the couim tteo on Territor ies, before which the question of Mor monism will be considered. A correa pondent inquired, " What about this question?'' "It will be the leading matter before the committee." "How does the majority of the com mittce stand in regard to it?" "My own opinion is that the major ity are in favor of such legislation, ai will terminate this abominable insti tution." "Have you heard any of the commit tee express any opinion?" "I have not. As a committee, we have not yet been together." "What would you say will be their action?" "It is impossible to say. A number of bills have Leen already introduced in relation to the Mormon system or the polygamous part of it." "The majority of the committee are in favor of its abolition, ars they not?" "Undoubtedly the majority of the committee are in favor of euch leg sla. tien as will bring these fellows to de cency or to terms." "I suppose, Mr. Aldrich, that the question of the admission of Dakota as a State will also come before your com mittee?" "Yes; undoubtedly." "What will be their action on this question?" "I believe she will be admitted, and I think she ought to be." "If she is admitted, which party will probably elect their ticket?" "The Republican ticket undoubted ly will be elected. I am informed that Dakota lias been rapidly settled with a most enterprising and intelligent set sf men. Her admission as a State would give the Republicans two addi tional Senators and a number of Con gressmen who, howovsr, would not par ticipate in any national legislation until the meeting of the next Congress " THE CLIFF DWELLERS. New Yoiik, Jan. 1.—The discovery of a deserted city Bixty miles long, cut in the rocky face of a winding clitl rewarded the efforts ef the Stevensm Smithsonian Institution exploring pat ty during its researches in New Mexi co and Arizona the past season. This is by far tho most important find yet made among tho ancient haunts of the cliff dwellers. Some of the houses con tain four or five dwellings, one on top of another, and on the plateau above tha cliff were found many ruina of temples of worship built of well cut •qeare stones. A comparison of the collections of pottery and implements gathered in the cliff houses by the ex ploring party, with those obtained in the Pueblo villages, strengthens the theory that the Pueblo Indians are de generate descendants of a once power . ht 1 race that built the ruined cities of the^Awps, and then retreating before some moro>lSiike foe, carvec^ft'these aingu'ar dwellings on tTi5 sheer walls of dizzy precipices and found in them, it may be for centuries, both fortresses and homes. Perhaps the hieroglyphic inscription as seen by Mr. Stevenson will, ono day, be deciphered and be foond to contain the tragic history of the wasting away by wars and famines of this ill fated people, who like the coneys of tho Bible, make the rocks their refuge. agency as small in pro poi enormous growth in the volume of trade and especially in proportion to tllo number of persons engagsd in busi neaa.
