THE OPENING OF THE NE2 PERCE RESERVE. __ We have information that L'ftds us to believe that if the proper represen UtîODS arc early made of facts, which . . » really exi-t, can be authentically made to the Indian buicau and to congress | the Nez Perce reservation can he mad« Open to settlement by the whites in j side of two years, or three years at the . , . .* ,1 ; farthercst. The advantages ot tni> ; change both to the Indians and whites can hardly bo computed in j ! ! I ! point of pecuniary advancement both Indians and whites, ami real do velopement of the Indian in civiliza tion, and in the industries which w ill make them grow, he prosperous and happy, and progress them nearer to the position of the whi'e race, as citi lens of our government respected by the whites, and themselves having and exercising due rtspset to oil the laws that govern the whites. The move fnents that should ho made to aecom ihis desirable end, must not he spas modic, but consistent and persistent, And with the right and welfare of lhe Indian kept constantly in view, and the Indians themselves must by our faith towards them in every far'icuiar be made to seo that we are laboring for their good as well as our own in a finan cial point of view os well as in a moral social and intellectual. They are us desirous of accumulation of wealth, as our white men, and many of them have more skill to accumulate than do many whites, while the maj rity pos sess hahi's of neither diligence nor economy, but are such as to scatter iu atcad of gathering up. The personol [observation of the industry, skill and [economy and tesulting thrift of white settlers among them who will tro it them well and encourage them to thcii [«won methodsof life will have more force [than all the abstract teachings at | . , , , laeencics where only a few persons are s 1 1 Ipresont who give them precepts, hut ; only in a very limited sense have the j opportunity to furnish them the ex amples they need. As matters now ; , . , , , 1 whatever is earned and saved; ! at these agencies goes into a com ! fund and the individual Indian is not in a position to under* j ,nd wherein he is individually bone ! , tted by the result of this labor an nemy. If these Indians are on lands • severalty, what he earns is his iwn property and the land lie tills in j is to care for and improve, and ho l as ! 10 one to dictate how ho shall use his j ! ' I F. However, no such result is contemplated. Having once started ANNEXATION MOVEMENT The convention which assembled in Shield's hall last Saturday to discuss and act upon the annexation matter was? in every sense a su<ct*.-*. it was strong in numbers, strong in good hard sense and strong in purport.*. Following ii the sentiment expressed by the meeting : it is proposed to meet the annexa tion question failly and tally. I»y nominating a man . olefcy on that is<u • and voting for him solidly, the people of the four c'Unties make a record that cannot be wiped out, and that will materially ai l Mr. lireu « in the woik he has so wed begun. A s lid vote iu favor of annexation gives congre-s in disputable proof ol the wishes of the people, and lho.se wi lies will undoubt edly be respected. The measure is s > just and equitable, s*» fduinly needed, nay, demanded, that if the people will speak this full loud enough for e-m gross to hear, that body will certainly heed. It is the only way to assist in the wink. Voting for the other candi dates is voting against annexation, out in this contes«, tin* people will make a determined figlil, und success is theirs. Nothing was ever accoui plished iu Ibis world i y waiting niid wishing ; sc let every man he up and doing. Mm'li wore the sentiments v.i la»t Saturday's convention. Mirror.
