In view of tbo fact that tho annual
mooting ol the O. R. it N. Co., tokos
place ucat Monday, and that tbo joint
lease has not boon formerly declared
"off," more than one of those persons
who keep sharp watch of the railway
chess board, regard Mr. Prescott's
appearance here at this lime as being
significant. It is fair to assume that
Henry \ idard is not unfriendly to M
Pr -.-.cott and lias not abandoned hope of
yet being able to consummate tho joint
lease. Reliable eastern journals have j
stated that Villard is again iu coutrol ol
the Oregon & Transcontinental company.
If this be true, which is more than
likely, ho will also control the O. li. &
N., for the reason that the Transconti
nental owns u majority of tho O. li. &

There is uleu some little apprehension
I that Mcs-rs. II. W. Corbett, W. f'.
Ladd, Henry 1'uiling and C. II. Lewis
are to bo ousted from the Ü. R. & N.,
directory. It will bo remembered that
these gentlemen, composing a majority of
the resident boatd, when tbo joint lease
was ratified in New York, "took the bils
in their teeth" and refused to confirm
the action. lVisibly meu will bo
selected for tbe coming year who can be
depended on to do the bidding of lire
New York board without question.
Tli is, however, is only a surmise.
An Oregonian man called ou Mr.
Prescott last evening for uuy news ho
might have in connection with bis visit
at this timo. He looks the picture of
health, and is very glad to be once more
in Portland. " I never was in a city in
my life," said Mr. Prescott, " in which
I felt so much personal interest. You
can't imagine with what eagerness 1 read
the Oregonian. Candidly, I found
more in it that I wanted to read than iu
any Boston or New York paper."
Being pressed for something deiiuito in
connectkm with his mission, Mr.
Prescott remarked that what few matter»
he had in baud, if they reached a con
summation, would bo for tbe benefit of
tho city, ami if they did not uiuterillza
no ono would be injured thereby. He
was more than glad to see the unmis
takable evidence of prosperity at every
hand, and hoped to bo able to add bis
efforts toward increasing it. Relative to
the approaching O. R. k N., election, he
said that he boiievcd that Elijah Smith
would again be chosen president.
Concerning tbe joint lease, he said that
tho Portland directors knew much more
about it than he.
The election next Monday will be
