Leave at this oltiee. in mining days wrongs were righted hy individual prowess. The ready six shooter was often the instrument of justice, and harsh judgments were ren dered which could not lie reversed, by any earthly court. In Hoi sc basin ruf fianism reigned with terror for a sea son. Peacahle men were driven from their claims by the organized toughs ot the camp. A woman who was noted more for her nerve than for her refine ment, claimed a rich piece of ground, in the best part ot the camp, but it was apparently abandoned for a while. Some of the rough element among the men decided to jump the claim and put a force of men to work at washing out the gold. The female owner heard that her claim was juni|ied. She re pair« d to the scene armed with a (lick handle. She jumped into the cut and licgnn to belay the shove'.ers, knock ing t hem down as she reached them. The man who had jumped the claim was a gun tighter and he tried to blull' the woman with the pick handle, hut he was laid low with the rude weapon, riiekiattle was Won. The woiyan With the pick handle had won her ca»e and the judgment was recorded in the sen timents of the people; and that judg ment was never reversed. An old mail remarked the other day that the bravest deed of the Nez Perces war was performed by a prominent j I in j ! I ' < | of ah t • ed is i citizens of Idulio enmity, who is now deceased. This brave man, from : ■amp with soldiers and volunteers around him, ol »served that an Indian warrior in ambush was holding a -coming party at hay and in danger of losing their lives. The Indian was nnceuled lull lie was doing some nad spooling every time a white limn >'X|mscd a vital |«»int of his body. The itizen was thoroughly posted upon the topography of tlie immediate vicinity oftlie ambush and knew that lie could approach the Indian from the opposite side within short gunshot range, lie, therefor«», took a double-barrel -hotgun loaded with buckshot, and went to re-, lieve his friends. He approached with-1 in thirty yards of lie- savage Uildly raised up to his full height and tired at the enemy. The Indian turned in fury and did not fall. The citizen tired tlie second barrel anil still the Indiuu charged upon him trying to tire his deadly rifle. Ids des Hough to j The party of capitalists from Do-ton, con-istiiig of Charles Francis Adams and hi- friends, who arc so largely in terested in the development of this sec tion of country, arrived in the city Monday afternoon hy boat. They vis ited the Hill and all interesting points in the Clearwater valley as far as Mr. Porter's fruit farm on the south side of I he river and on the north side to the property owned hy the Adam- syndi eate. After returning to the city a re ception was held in the parlors of the < irnstein residetiee where a few reu ns sell tat ive citizens were invited. Mr. Adams who was the spokesman of the parly tirst made many impiiriesabout the progress in truit growing, farming and mining since his former visit six year- ago. The speaker had accurate knowledge of (lie country and the bus iness ufliiirs as they existed at the time of his former visit and noted the pro gress made with accuracy. He asked ah ait the recent development in the mountain milling camps and the pros pect tor tut, tire business relations with the various districts. Mr Adams in answer to some impti t v about rail road extension, expressed the opinion 1 1 mt our hope was from • he extension of the N. I'. This would lie done as soon as Die tide turn ed in financial afliiirs. With one load extended to this city others would follow, rite O. I Î . A- N. now hold the trade hy river route Iml Huit would be inndeipuile ill the near future. Lewis ton should expect great advantage from tlie reorganization of railroad business which the signs oftlie lime.- indicate I will soon occur. The needs of tliis| place would lie met hy an extensive in- | eal system independent of any through | system, which made local frieght pay | for carrying through freight. Lewis-) ton, Mr. Adams thinks, is fortuuutly located at the gateway to a great conn try and must some day lie an impor tant railroad center of a grand local system, tapping the basin of the Snake which extends from Halt on the south mul the Coeur d' Aleiies on the north. Mr. Adams did not profess to have any inside information about railroad aflairs, for lie lias been out ot tlie busi ness for six years, luit tie generalized from tlie standpoint of a business man only. He said tlie next turn oftlie tide was sure to put Ils on the road to great prosperity. IDs glowing hopes should inspire courage and the fact that lie is still investing large sums of money in Lewiston enterprises is positive evidence of his sincerity. He is a sagacious business man and as an outside investor his idea ol our future i- worthy of consideration. Idaho County News. paying pro| the use of • i( irangeville Free Pres. F. I*.
