This is a promising camp and has been kept hack for the want of capital. , l'wo pitiable waifs were brought be fore Judge Stookev. of «the Probate court last Friday. Thomas Stevens, of Tammany, found two little boy* In his granary last Thursday night, they were huddled together upon aii improvised bed. made of a burlap sack spread upon the Hour. They told a tale of desertion that appealed to the sympathy of the bachelor heart as it would to any oilier refined being. The hoys, aged 7 and 5 had beeu turned out of a temporary home, provided by their mother and left in the old build ing with atisolutely no provision for their comfort. They were placed upon horses, like stray cats in a hag and con veyed to the lonely spot, so far away that return was impossible and there left to fate. Mr. Stevens found and fed them and brought them to town. Judge Stookey found a temporary home for them among relatives until their lawful guardian can he located. Their inuther is supposed to tie work ing near Lake Walia. W. H. V. Rickards is in the city from the Green creek mines. Coroner Strong was sent to Nezperee Wednesday to serve pa|>er* in a replevin case to which the sheriff of t lie count v is a party. This ease grew out of the foreclosure of a chattel mortgage. The parties giving the mortgage plead no consideration for the obligation and therefore they desire to recover tlie property Mortgaged from the sheriff The history of the case involves a transfer of title to a reservation home stead and the would lie purchaser of the claim claims fraud in the fact that the homesteader showed and described one quarter section ot land while the numbers given covered another tract. The case will lie a complicated one to be untangled by the courts. Mr. A. Kitinard last Sunday caught two large earp with honk mid line from Snake river. He hooked another which was so large he could not land him. These fish are new arrivals in our waters. They have corne perhaps from the lower Columbia; or they may have been placed In the Snake or may have escaped from some private pond in sufficient, number* to stock the river. While the carp is only a second rate food fish, they will lie a valuable acqui sition to the Snake, as there are hut few good fish iu that stream. Mr. Funster, of Vineland, makes an encouraging report. He owns a five acre farm on which he planted garden for family use. He worked all sum mer for wages and cultivated his gar den by working over time. This fall he marketed his surplus, with the re turn of a cash asset sufficient to support his Tamily a year. The question of whether a man can make a living on five acres in the Lewiston valley is de termined by this example. Mr. Fans ler's five acres made a living for him and leaves him his wages intact as a clear profit. Louis N. Rons returned Hatiuday from a trip to Camas prairie and Craig's mountain. Leland supplies a great quantity of the Ilnur used on the reservation, the Weippe and in the mining camps of the Pierce district. The great wheat cron of the 1'ntlutcli is about one-fourth saved. The rainy weutlier cauglit the farmers with most of the grain hi the shock. AM agree that very little damage lias been done, hut »re apprehensive for the fuiure if the wet weather should set in again. This week there are seventeen steam threshers at work on Potlatch ridge and tlieic will probably is* twenty by the close of the week. This means a saving of 30,000 bushel* each day that they call run. Koinegrain is still stand ing, hut tlie greater portion lias heen cut and is either stacked or iu tlie shock. At the most careful estimate it will take three weeks of good weather to save all the wheat. The yield, per acre, is mulling from 35 to 60 bushels. Dr. J. (j. Moxley and Pres. J. N.
