sent. There being no quorum, council
adjourned until Friday night, when the
matter of assessment of benefits and
damages will be disposed of, which City
Engineer Biiggs has made a full and
complete report on.

Important Land Contest Settled.
In the contest of Amanda Bolin vs.
Joseph B.McCully it ha. been decided by
the secretary of the interior in favor of
the contestant.
The last decision which was made on
J»>y 18th. was denying the spplication
for a rehearing. This involves 160 seres
of land near Nezperce and has been fought
hard by the respective parties from start
to finish. The case is now closed and
Miss Bolin gets the land.

Steamer A'.mota to Run. |
The steamer A 1 mots w», put in com
mission Tuesday to take the place of'the
Spokane which was recently disabled
hut will only carry wheat and freight,
and will not run on any set schedule of
time. She left Riporia at 4:2s « *»
Tuesday and passed Almota at 10 a. m
yesterday, but has not yet arrived in
Lewiston. It is not known at the O. R.
& N. office what the cause of the delay is
and word is anxiously awaited as to • her
whereabouts.
Took Aim Buck.
Sheriff Garner, of Columbia county,
arrived in the city last night from Day
t n and took charge of a man by the name
___
of Patterson, who is wanted at Starbuck
for stabbing a man at that place recently
and who was arrested by Marshal Denny
Tuesday night.
The particulars of the affair are meagre 1
but Patterson states that he was mixed
up in a "rough house'' fight in which he
tried to protect himself and only did it
in self defense. The sheriff and prisoner
left this morning.

Felt a Little Gay.
Old Chief-Fire-Water-on-the-Brain
of the Nez Ptrce reservation came
town yesterday, for the first time in a year
and .mmedlately set out to see the sights.
The old man is quite aged, being some
where in the 80s, and noting among
other numerous sights of interest a num
ber of saloons, made an effort to secure
something befitting his name,'in which to
imbibe, but to no avail. However, he was
seen later making wild gesticulations and

Constable Dudley Gilman thought he
I would gather him in, but his old time
schooling in diplomacy, which he
! brought into use at this stage of the
game, rescued him from a berth over

slightly overcome with the heat.

Served in the War of 7T.
Capt. John Kineie, y. S. A., was in the
city yesterday from Pullman, where he
is now liviug.
The captain was formerly of the and
U. 8. Infantry and came here in 1877'dur
ing the Nez Perce Indian war in which
he served.
The captain left for home this morning.
Many of his old time friends who are lo
cated in Lewiston were rushing around
morning to find him, but were sadly
disappointed on learning that he had re-
turned home.

The Red Me '> and Foresters of this city
are planning to arrange a ball game, to

pany, reports that without doubt the
Billings will lie floated, and beyond sev

good as ever. Her position is peculiar.
Both her bow and stem are lying over
deep water, the depth of the water under
her how being 13 feet, and under her
stern 11 feet. It is only the middle part
of her bull that is imbedded on the rocks.
There are two reefs running diagonally
: across underneath her, with a depth of
water of nine feet between them. She is
lying in a slanting position on one side,

that remains to be done is to launch her

Mrs. J, W. Poe and daughter, Sadie,
returned last night from Lake Waba.
Pike Cooper left this morning for a
few days visit with friends in Moscow.
P. P. Minnaugh of San Francisco, rep
resenting Mills & Gibb of New York, is
in the city.
Van B. De Lash mutt left oh this morn
ing's Stuart train for Callender, in the
Hnmp district.
F. A Stevens, a farmer of Osborne,
Idaha, was in the city last night and left
this morning for Spokane.
Sam Langert, repaesenting the Wash
ington Liquor Company, of Spokane, is
in the city transacting business.
Geo. H. Lake left this morning for
Newsome for a lew days to inspect some
mining properties in which he is inter
ested.
Hon. Frank A. Fenn, of Boise, chair
man of the Republican State Central
Committee is expected in Lewiston next
Sunday.
Hoö. C. S. Vorhees, of Spokane, was
in the city last night and left this morn
ing on mining business in fhe Salmon
Miss Aileen Howatt left this morning
for her home in Spokane. She has been
the gyest of Mrs. E. Baumister and fam
ily, of Asotin, for the past week.
Jap Mounce is in the city today from
his ranch on Waha prairie and stetes that
his grain is being threshed and runs on
an average of 40 bushels to the acre.
Judge J. K. Vincent and wife, who
have been visiting old time friends in
the city for the past few days, will leave
for their home in Mt Idaho tomorrow.
E. A. White, of the firm of White
Bros., returned last night from a vaca
tion of two weeks visiting friends at West
lake. Mr. White-reports having a pleas
anttime.
Chas. B. Simpson, of the department
of agriculture, returned to the city from
a trip to Newsome and will spend several
days in the city investigating the codling
moth question.
K. A. White lias been appointed agent
of the Northern Pacific Express Com
pany, vice C. F. Leland resigned, and is
today moving that office to the White
Bros, fruit and cigar store.
E. Harvey, of the grain firm of Palmer
ton & Harvey, of Pullman, was in the
city last night and left today for points
on the Clearwater branch where he is
having several grain warehouses erected.
Jack Bell, of Dayton, formerly of the
firm of Bell & Bollinger, of this city, ar
rived in the city last night enroute to
Camas Prairie, where be goes to look
after the harvesting of a crop in which'he
is interested at that place.
F. II. Gilbert has been appointed agent
for'the Great Northern Express Compa
ny, vice E. A. White resigned, and will
move his office in the rooms now oc
cupied by C. F. Leland. Mr. Gilbert will
take charge of the stage company's
business also.
The Sheriff Brought Dew.
Deputy-Rheriff J. R. Lydon returned
last evening, having in charge C. A.
Ifow, wan teil for the alleged stealing of
a span of. horses, and was captured at
Enterprise, Oregon, by officers there on
information from Sheriff Rozen. Dow
was arraigned before Judge Langford this
morning and placed under #200 bond to
appear tomorrow morning for a prelim
inary hearing. Ho furnished bond with
Cash Cole and W. L. Boise as sureties.
Prairie Chickens rieotital
The prairie chicken season opened up
yesterday aud a number of local sports
men took advantage of the opportunity
to be among the first to try their luck.
Dr. J. J. Randall and Robert Schleisher
left for the Clearwater country, returning
last night.
Charles Kress, W. P. Hunt and Jack
Footing composed another party, who
took in the Section. The results of the
day's hunt are as follow^: Kress, 60;
Hunt, 37; Ponting, 23; Schleisher. 19;
Randall, 10, making a total of 149 birds
killed. They report that the fields
abound with them and it is expected that
before the season closes, some good re
cords will be made by those interested in
the sport.
Disturbed the Peace.
A warrant was issued yesterday for
Wm, Anderson and Frank Grounds,
charged by D. H. Haner with disturbing
the peace.
Anderson was arrested last night and
arraigned before Probate Judge Langford
and placed under $200 bonds for ap
pearance at 10 a. ni. Grounds was ar
rested this morning and held in J500 for
appearance at the same time.
Anderson furnished bonds and Grounds
is now endeavoring to do so.
Haner states that they, while on horse
back, rode into him while he was out
driving, demolishing his buggy.
Two Marriage Licenses.
A marriage license was issued today to
Alien D. White and Rose E. Stuart, both
of Uniontown, and were married today
at 2 o'clock by Justice McConkey.
A marriage license was issued today to
Gilbert W. Doyle and Hattie E. Stevens,
both of Tammany.
Ernest McCullough, C. E., states that
he is prepared now to take a few students
in mathematics, surveying and mechanic
al drawing. 132-1
