Fockler Northern Idaho. | 1 ! j Northern Idaho may be considered as that part of the territory lying north of the 8uake and Salmon rivers. It includes the mining regions of tlie mountains that cross the territory along the line of Salmon river, and the great agricultural and pastoral country to the west, and north of that range, as far as the Cœur do'Alene range—a distance of perhaps, r hundred and fifty miles. This country is a part of what, iu gen eral terms, is known as the Palouse country. The line between Washing ton and Idaho running north from the mouth of Clearwater entirely through it. The country east is Idaho, that west, W ashiugton. The Idaho portion is watered by the Clearwater and its branches, and thd bead of Palouse river, which flows into the Snake iu Washington Territory. East and south of Clearwater and north of Snake and Salmon, is the great Camas Prairie, a country of five or six honored square miles, and of great agricultural and pastural capability, with great beauty and scenery. The soil is excellent, cov ered with the finest grass and yielding large crops of all the cereals. Most ol this is the fine range known as Craig's Mountain, itseli a vast pasture. The timber on this range, is pine, tamarack and fir, and the mountains arc really grassy openings, rolling away in parks and lawns fur miles. The Nez Perce Indian reservation includes a part of this ran;re, and then extends westward to the Clearwater, and southward to the •Snake river, and covers a most benuti lui country. West of Clearwater, start ing from Snake river at its mouth, is one of the finest agricultural regions west of the Rocky Mountains, extending northward fora hundred miles on both sides of the Idaho line. All grains grow in tho greatest perfection, Stock thrive exceptionally well. There tire homes for thousands of families Imre waiting their coming. As to climate, this may be truly .-aid, though Ring so far north, the entire country has an average temperature not colder than \ irgiuia, wit 11 little or none of the sul triness in St|mmer of that state. The rainfall is slight, and not often does snow fall to any depth. Notwithstanding this, grain needs no irrigation. As to healthiness, this may challenge com parison with any other region. The country is rolling, the streams dear and rapid, no stagnant pools, and literally no local causes for disease. The Northern Pacific railroad will pass directly through this portion of the coutitr J> £ ivin o it cheap connection with the commerce of the world ; also the opening up of the Columbia river to free navigation, which ought to be {soou accomplished. This will then be one of the most desirable portions of Idaho to settle in. In v 1 w ot these facts many Oregonians are moving in this Fall and occupying the country. Lewiston is the principal town in North Idaho. It is situated at the mouth of the Clearwater aud is at pres ent the head of steamboat navigation. It does a thriving trade with the interi or and will in the near future be of considerable commercial is M Î" oe a P Iace °* considerable commercial im portance.
