Gace suggested that young converts might be organized into classes, over which some earnest Christian, wise in spiritual things, should preside, and direct and guide them in tbclr re igloos hah* its. The plan was referred to as having been adopted and working satisfactorily in one of the sity Mission school*. IL.M. Guilford said that a “ faithful band ” had been formed in bis school which numbered sixty six young converts, all of whom have signed a covenant that they will perform religious duties at every available opportunity. Tbe meetings of these jonlhlul covenanters were exceedingly in teresting and profitable. The singing of “I'm a'Pilgrim and Pm a Stranger," and the benediction, pronounced by Bev. Mr.Dlckinfon, terminated the proceedings. Falicrand provoet Marshal Gen. Oakes were in Chicago yes terday all day engaged in ascertaining tbe quota oi Cook county under the late call for 500,000 men. The recruiting agent at the United States Naval Rendezvous, with his clerks, were busily engaged in ascertaining, as far as possible, the residence of those he has enlisted. This will somewhat reduce our quota, but not to that ex tent some-persons imagine. Without being able to state posi tire 1 / the exact number, we are led to believe that Chicago will be called upon for very nearly tbe number of men first announced. The reasons for arriving at this conclusion we are not at liberty to give to-day; bnt they arc conclusive to the authorities, and we presume will be to oar citizens. Gen. Fuller and Col. Oakes, accompanied by CoL Hancock, left for Springfield lan evening, the latter to closely scrutinize tbe rolls, and it is ex pected that the definite number will be arrived at to-day, in which event, tbe announcement will be made in the telegraphic columns of the Tbibckx. We cannot give oar citizens any hope that a draft can be avoided. It is morally certain that the wheel of destiny will revolve on the 6th of September, and It behooves all to settle their worldly eflalre, and be ready to obey the expected summons. There Is bnt one way to avoid It, and that Is for general volunteering. There are but thirteen days intervening between now and tbe stb, and it is doubtful if a sufficient number conld be induced to volunteer in any event. Messrs Editors: The influence of the working classes, the hone and mn«cle of society, has ever been the desire of political parties in all past years of onr national existence—and. &e one of the speakers of the re cent “ Workingmens’ Meeting" stated, they have often been grossly deceived and drawn Into snares that they did not anticipate. finch being the case, 11 is rather a bold move for rebel sympathizers at this state of the conn try, to try and Induce the laborers influence into the channels 01 hostility to a government that has ever been, and is still, the best friend (of any gov ernment on earth) to tho working man. Even now. the taxes which are laid on all the citizens of this conntrv pro rata, are fortbe one great purpose of absolving the working mao from lesadcticcts of an aristocracy who determine to bring slave labor into conflict with free labor and so make the letter disreputable to the poor man, and standlncin tho way of his advancement in society. It is for the interest of every man, and the poor man in partieolar, to see to It that tbW slaveholders’rebellion be put down at once and forever. Believe not the words ot those men wbo would etrive to excite you against your Govern ment, and depend upon it they have an “axe to grind” of their own. No w, my lellow laborer, look at the matter can didly, and remember that you will make yonr owu case much woree by workingaeulnst yonr Govern ment, for although war is terrible in its effect?, and expensive, yet there arc evils that can only be purged by such iastramcntallties, and in this case of onre. although living is labor Is also high, and If the Government is supported, a few more hard blows by our noble armies will forever pat to rest tbt se rebels of the Soatb and their sympathi zers of the North, And now to the object of this communication. I wish to make the suggestion that the toy al labor ing or working men of Chicago bo called together to giv* expression to their views in regard to the present state of the country. Such a meeting would be one of noble interest and Influence to the citizens of Illinois, and show to the world that there Is too much Intelligence in the “ work ing men” to be made to bcllcvchy the simple word of a “ Virginia aristocrat” that (to Use hfa own ideas) ” the rich were the real power la the nation, and that the clergy, and the men of education and influence, and ahqve all the press, were in league with the Government to destroy the people.” 1 ob ject, as a working mas, to he put on record as fa voring such views.
