ROAMING THE AIR WAVES . . With RAT FITZPATRICK* ■vary Thursday, the Andre Kos telaneU 4S-p!ece orchestra rehears aa from 9 o'clock In the morning until 40:00 In the afternoon. There's only one Interruption—for lunch. But even while they’re eating their noon-day meal, the musicians work. While munching on their sand wiches, they listen to reoords of the numbers they've been rehearsing In the morning, to see what improve ments and chances should be made before the program swings Into its dress rehearsal. It’s a new twist eating lunch to the accompaniment of one’s own music. Gey Lombardo’s speed-boat, "Tempo,” arrived In Chicago— via the land rente. The cap tain of the beat drove from New York to the Windy City, where Lombardo and his Royal Canadians are playing a sum mer engagement at the Palmer HonijBs The >S-foot craft rode 1.000 miles across the continent on a trailer attached to Guy’s ear. Immediately after his ship came Ip, Gny took It out for a cruise on Lake Michigan, leav ing a note for his brother, Car men—'’Out to Launch—Be back later." Oracle Allen played hostess at a dinner party which Mr. and .Mrs. George Bums gave at their BeOerly Hills mansion, Saturday evening honoring Jack Benny and Mary Livingston, new arrivals In Holly wood. Among the gueses were Ed die and Ida Cantor, A1 Jolson, Ruby Keeler, Mr. and Mrs. Bing Crosby, George Jessel and Norma Tal madge. But Oracle’s brother was still missing. A studio poll of National Broadeasting Company stars reveals that the microphone ar Util ut feeittnr bum thin foot to me that Joe Lewi* will knock out Mu Sehmellnt in the vortncomifif nwiTyweiini Dout in Yankee Stadium on June 18. The fight will be described ex clusively or*r NBC network* by Clem McCarthy and Edwin C. Hill from the ringside. Hera are a few opinions pick ed np around the NBC studios: Lenny Roes—Louis to win. No one in the world can beat him. His deeeptiveneos is one of his strongest point*. Winifred Cecil—Rooting for SchmeHng. Gus Haenschen—I have a hnneh that Sehmellng will pull an upset. He’s in excellent phy sical condition and has a fight ing heart that should carry him a long way. Frank (Captain Henry) Mc Intyre—Hope Joe Louis will win because it will be another sport victory for his home state of Michigan. Phil Duey—Sehmellng will be lucky If he’s on his feet to an swer the bell In the seventh. Frank Black—Louis’ hand should go up as winner In the fourth. Phillips Lord—“They never come back,” and there seems little likelihood of Sehmellng proving the exception. Peter van Steedan—Scbmel big will undoubtedly be able to furnish evidence that lightning can strike more than once. Harry Horllck—Three years ago Sehmellng would have been my ehoice. Today It's Louis by all means. Bing Crosby—Joe Louis. Past performances prove the Brown Bomber the best bet by far. Jimmy Dorsey—I’ll ride along with Bing. We note e growing tide of re ■entment against the laughter of studio audiences during comedy broadcasts. We all have different Ideas on what’s funny and what Isn't. When one of the comics per* pe trates a gag that we think re quires a gas mask, It’s enough to make you gnash your teeth when you hear the studio gapers guffaw ing. It has been our experience that studio audlerfces will laugh at any thing. After all, they got In free and they feel obligated to help the comedian put over his Jokes. An other puzzler is why comedians play to a handful of people in the studio when millions of people out side are waiting to be entertained. Staart Churchill, tenor who makes the gals’ hearts go pltter patter, will reveal himself In person for the first time on a Broadway stage. The scene: Paramount Theater .... Don Bestor Is making his fans thea ter conscious too. He goes into Lowe’s Metropolitan, Brooklyn, for the week starting Friday. After taking his last bow at the Met, he entrains for Cleveland. Among the radio stars who were thrilled to the gooseflesh point by the arrival of the Queen Mary to day was Emil Coleman, the maes tro. He spent many years of his life In Merrle Olde Englande and got his start as a baton waver there It was In England, too, that he met the beauty who was to be come Mrs. Coleman. . . . Height sta tistics on the Pickens Sisters: Helen Is tallest, 8 ft. 8. Patti Is most pe tite, 6 ft. 4, with high heels. Jane is 6 ft. 0. . ., If the strains of Mark Wamow’s Blue Velvet Or chestra over CBS sound familiar, it’s because it’s practically the same band he used on the Evening in Paris series.
