SMALL AUDIENCE
HEARS ROHRMAYER
Liquor Commissioner Says
Too Many Liquor Permits
Issued By State
Liquor Comsr. PruncLs P. Rohr
mayer, whose term expires this year,
last night told a sparse audience
present at Davenport hall that he
planned the introduction into this
year’s session of the legislature of
39 amendments to the state’s liquor
Jaws to "tighten its controls.’’
Claiming that the state’s liquor
control has been so weakened by
the entrance of successive broader
interpretation that conditions in
Connecticut are now worse than
prohibition, Mr. Rohrmayer said
that there now are 3,308 liquor per
mits In the state and that Is ”2,000
too many”.
Last night’s forum was conducted
by the Sunday Noon club of the
Second Church.
During the question period follow
ing, the commissioner was sharply
contested in his views by Harmon
Genlot. this city, secretary of the
Connecticut Restaurant Owners’
Association Board of Trade, who
defended the liquor trade with the
assertion that he knew of no branch
of its organization which had in
terfered with the liquor laws of the
state. Implying that the legal pro
fession was partly responsible for
these changes, Mr. Genlot said that
he was opposed to the De Novo
clause of the law, which he felt
was greatly responsible for any
weakening. The latter provision
staets, in eflect, that on any ap
peals taken by a permittee on rev
ocation of licenses, the liquor com
mission cannot use the record of the
evidence of the original trial but
must bring in new evidence.

Bride Breaks With GI
To Pilot Trolley Car
Omaha. Neb.. Jan. 20.—(UP)—
“Clang, clang, clang, went the trol
ley—thump, thump, thump, went
his heart”—just like the song. Pvt.
James Uriah Smith, 21, of Halls,
Tenn., climaxed his romance on a
streetcar.
“I was going with her," Pvt.
Smith told Judge W. A. Day In
district court, “and one day she
asked me to marry her. This was
on the streetcar.’
But the bride, Miss Lottie June
Drake, 18, Council Bluffs, la., re
jected her husband a few days
after their marriage.
Pvt. Smith said Miss Drake had
told him she had applied for a Job
as a trolley pilot because she
thought she would like the work.
She was turned down because she
was too young. After the marriage,
she applied again and was accept
ed by the streetcar company.
“After she got the job she would
not have anything to do with me,”
the private said. “She served some
kind of a paper on me, kicking me
out, and she wrote me saying It
would be beat If I didn't see her
any more.”
