MaaJs mam Weob TaraMt aerrao t Heavy Buying Orders to Stop Losse on the Short Side. - - New York. March 2. Prices of stocks rose today to the highest level yet touched on the recovery from the se vere decline which set in after the first of the year. An obstinate short inter est -was driven to cover and the buy ing thus necessitated was an htuportant factor in lifting prices. The profession al element in the speculation has been dtetructful of the recovery and has put out short lines at various stages In the expectation of a reaction. Buying or ders designed to stop losses on the short side were encountered in large volume in the course of today's ad vance. The movement against the ehorts showed evidence of organization, and the possession of large resources, and also of the employment of the usual methods to push the price movement. It owed its effectiveness, however .to the small offerings of stocks for sale, and this condition, in turn, is due to tne subsidence of apprehension on va rious accounts which was the motive for the selling earlier in the year. In umtea otates eteei, particuiaaiy. tnere were signs or activities by an organ lzeo. speculative party, which gave rise to surmises that the market pool in that stock had resumed operations on tne lone side or the market. It was taken as a sign of such activity that there should be a revival tf rumors of a new attempt to list the shares on the Pans bourse, the similar rumors last year having marked the campaign m united Mtates steel in its most act ive speculative stage. Yesterday's for mal announcement of the retirement from the directorate of John D. Rocke feller, Jr., with the acco moan vine ex planations that the family holdings of cne stock ' are not sufficiently large to juuiy ma giving any time or alien tkm to the affairs of the corporation,' was of a kind used with depreseinir ef- feet sometimes when speculation is in a different mood. The indifference of the market to it was, m itself, a strik ing evidence of the subsidence of all n ervousnes s. A quieting of anxiety over possible trade recession is preceptible in a sim ilar way. The improvement reported in tne steel trade is responsible partly for this -better feeling. Even the cop per trade came in for a share of this cheerful feeling today by reason of the reported decline in the European vis ible supply cf the metal. The decrease since February 15 was smSlll, but was the first reported for many months and added significance from the large exports from this country which have gone rnto foreign supplies m the period ooveerd.' The price of the metal advanced strongly in .uonaon toaay, ana copper securities there, as well as here, advanced. The action of the wheat market was taken to mean that the lately numer ous reports of 'damage to the winter wheat crop were suspected of. being overorawn. Discount rates eased In London but hardened in Berlin. Foreign exchange here rose again, and offerings of funds to lend . on time diminished, . with strengthening effect on interest rates. There was little pressure to sell at concessions at any time, even when the demand died down late in the day. Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par value. $2,565,000. York to beat out Cincinnati last year. And I don't think it likely that the same kind of accident will help the Giants to repeat that feat. watch them droD this vear. They'll be lucky to finish anywhere in the first division, for both the Reds and Phillies will beat them out." When Dooin ridded his mental works of the above, says a New York writer, he was acting at a theater in Cincinnati, and by his diplomacy shows that he is a lively and intelligent press agent. He is to be admired for the skill with which he mingles business and pleas ure. When it comes to keeping Phila delphia in the first diivision in 1910 it is to be opined that something more than idle words will be necessary, and Dooin's average for verbosity is about .975. It's much better than his field ing averag. No young man who es says to manage a major league club in 1910 has a mightier task on his hands than Dooin, and It gives regret to see such a gentle and harmless young soul led so ruthlessly to the treadmill. If he escapes being convert ed into a first baseman lie will be lucky. Custom Grinding TUESDAYS and FRIDAYS at YANTIC ELEVATOR. A n. MANNING, Yantic. Conn. During a fanning bee the names of Frank Smith of Chicago and Jack War hop of New York were brought into a discussion of pitchers. Someone sug gested that Warhop would have a bad season. "Why?" "They'll get on to what he has." "What has Warhop got. anyway?" Freddie Payne was asked. "Oh, not much," drawled the White Sox backstop, "Just everything. I couldn't name anything, guess, that he can't throw. They'll have to work pretty hard to get on to everything that the old boy can hand over. Smith, in Freddie's opinion, is anoth er gentleman who has about everything in the pitching calendar. '"He has cpeed ta burn and he can hand over a keen sprtter. His only fault is with men on bases. That's where they beat him. Scott, the husky fllnger whom the White Sox secured from Frank Isbell's Wichita club, is another fancy pitching proposition. "The only trou ble with Scott is that he is effective with his team in the hole and lossens up when his club is four or five runs in the lead," said Payne. "Scott is a great pitcher as long as the game is clotse. Let the White Sox get a bunch of runs, though, and he'll be a cinch for the op posing batters. That's what cost him several games last season. As soon as he loses tiie habit he'll show a lot of them." ' MONEY. New York. March 2. Monev on call easy, 2 B-83 per cent., ruling rate Z 7-8, last loan 2 3-4, closing bid 2 3-4, offered at 2 7-8. Battling Nelson is one of the few champions that have had the decency to come out and acknowledge they were fairly beaten. "Bat" says now that he had held Wolgast too lightly and did not train as hard as he should have done. This ought to be a lesson to all champions to train faithfully for every battle they fight. If Nelson needs any further conso lation he probably will be able to de rive it from the following, penned by an enthusiastic admirer of the Dane: "Battling NelBon, the passing cham pion, was glorious in defeat.
