So that executives and department heads or business concerns of Norwich - may- learn to master the science of efficiency to apply . to their respec tive department and tasks, an efficien cy department has been organized at the Young Men's Christian Associa- tien to assist business in general to ' cut down wastes and to Increase .earn ings and profits. The formal opening of this depart ment will take place on Tuesday e v enig. Oct. 9th, at the Y. M. C. A. when George F. Barber, president of the ef ficiency club of New York, will speak on Human Efficcny In business. Mr. Barber Is an efficiency expert and has gone into plants of varied business and has placed them on an efficiency basis. He Instructed more than 1,000 business executives hist year in the application of efficiency to their business. The efficiency course has been pre pared by Harrington Bmmerson, known throughout the industrial world as the "High Priest of Efficiency." Mr. Em . tnerson lays down thirteen fundament al laws which solve the easiest, quick est and best way to perform any con- ceivable task in any kind of business.. BRO'OKLY FAIR .' I ATTENDANCE 5,000 ' ; i. Splendid Weather Wednesday Coax Out the Crowd Unusually Pine Ex hibition of Cattle garden Produots Shown by Children' Club a Sur prise State Defence Council's Tall Infl Work Speedy Races. Brooklyn. Conn.. Sept. 19. Close to' a record crowd came to the Brooklyn iair Wednesday, in an tne years mat the fair has been held there have been few as perfect fair days and this tend ed to bring visitors from every nook ana corner of Windham county and from many points In New London and Tolland counties. ' .As. had been predicted, the 'fair p roved very satisfactory .in every way. Every department was crowded with exhibits and visitors crowded about every exhibit. . About 8,000. Present. The crowd fcefran to pour through the gates soon after 9 o'clock and kept convjng until well after 2 o'clock, when it was estimated that about 5,000 peo ple were on hand. Along the Midway. The tents of concession buyers sprang- up like mushrooms ' along the midway during Wednesday morning. In tnl tented line there was a va riety of opportunity for amusement and chances at games of skill and also the supreme attraction where "your fortune" was told by a band of gaily bedecked gypsies. It was noticed that few of -the men of draft age were grtting the gypsies any money, the assumption being that these huskies are not worrying about their fate. Splendid Cattle Show. The showing of cattle at the fajr this year surpa eses any or the dls plays within a decade. There were 190 head in the sheds Wednesday fore noon when the judges began their work of awarding premiums. By many this showing of cattle was regarded as remarkable, for many farmers have been reducing their herds during the past year on account of tne excessively high price of grain, Boys and Girls' Club Exhibit Pro dues. In the exhibition building there is I display this year that holds more than passing- attention. It is the showing by the Boys' and Girls' clubs of Wind ham county of the products of their gardens their Impressive answer to the call sent out last spring to swell the country's food supply. Boys and girls of Plain-field, Westminster, Can terbury and Brooklyn have splendid exhibitions of such class as to make their elders to look to their laurels in the vegetable growing lin; Quality a Surprise. . The quality of the products shown and the variety In which they are .dls played proved really, amazing to the thousands of fair visitors who had permitted themselves to believe fhat the children's garden movement was a fad and waste of effort, not to con slder"the throwing away of pood seed, but they had one real surprise coming them when they started to inspect that garden display at the fair Wed nesday and hundreds of those who came up as skeptics went away with their hats off to the young people who have been doing gardening. In the children's display is an end less array of vegetables, many kinds of potatoes, beans, peas, pumpkins, rauskmelons, corn, parsnips, carrots, beets, turnips, all in perfect condi tion. Awards Today. Awards in the' boys' and girls club contests will be announced today. . The general display of farm pro uucts at the fair this year Is very pood and fills all available space. There is also a fine showing of fruit. Big Exhibit of Poultry. As usual, the poultry building is crowded to the doors with entries this year and it was necessary to exclude visitors Wednesday for the period dur ing which the Judges were at work, in order that they might have space to move about Women's Building. In the woman's building, which was crowded all day long, there is a fine showing or needlework and of the special lines of domestic arts that are always on display there. Council of Defense Campaign. This year the Connecticut State Council of Defence has an exhibition at the fair that is of real value in driving home the lesson of the need of food conservation and teaching home economics. Scores - of exhibits are used by the council .In making clear the purposes of the- campaign ana in teaching now to maKe it a success. There are great streamers that quote the ungodly utterances of Kaiser Wllhelm as to his ruling by divine right and direction of God. There are copies of German procla mations posted in occupied sections of France nd Belgium, teaching the barbarity of German invasion and the consequences that this country will have to face inthe event of the kai ser's success.- There are maps of the Berlin-to-Bagdad scheme of. empire that the Pan-Germans hold so dear and the red -blot stretches across "Mjttel Europa." Telling Displays. The exhibits that drive' home this country's perils are supplemented by displays teaching how to grow food and fruit, how to preserve them; how to increase the supply of milk; how to raise poultry scientifically and how to do many other things that will help fight a battle that this country must wage successfully If it is to be on the winning side In the war. Demonstra tions of preserving food and of test ing milk were being made by experts within the tent during the day, and their work was closely followed. Interesting Tests. Thirlng the morning hours of Wed nesday there was a display and tests of working oxen and. town teams . in side the ring, this feature proving of special interest to the men who are usdng oxen on their farms, and this number is constantly growing as the price of horses continues to soar. Exhibit of , Norwich .Firm. In the exhibition building the Brook-. lyn grange has a fine exhibit, which includes vegetables, fruit and samples of home arts. Plaut-Cadden . of Nor wich ehows the concern's usual line of Wasserman and Crawford player-pianos and pianos and Victor talking ma chine, the booth in charge of Adelard Morin. Result of Races. During the afternoon the interest all These same laws 'have solved more. than 25.000 examples of efficiency in over 200 of the largest plant in the world. The local efficiency department will ', be handled in the same way as similar departments in associations throughout ' tne united States.
