THE BAY ihlanui The )a»t steamer from Europe brings the gratifving intelligence that the Bay Inlands have be«n finally ceded to Honduras bv (ircat Britain, and tliat all sovereignty over those islands by Victoria i* absolutely withdrawn. This reluctant compliance with the Clayton Buiwer treaty, it is said, was extorted from Great Britain, through fear, as it is the first time in her his tory that the paw of the Britiah Lion hit been voluntarily raised from any piece ofterritory in her possession. It is rumored that the relation? existing between England and Louis Napoleon Me of a suspicious character, and that ibe sly and subtle intrigues of the par vmn'f in the affairs «f Spain, have sent a chill through England not overmuch favorable to the interesting friendship known throughout the eonntry as heretofore existing. No doubt Napo- ieon is very grateful for the delicate manner in which Victoria bound tho CJurter to his leg when he was in Eng- l&lid, and reiueinVis the two sweet kisses which slit* permitted hiin to take from licr r«»sv clieeks, with emotions pb-sisiiro. Still more thankful is lie that the stupid ministry have permitted him to rise from a usurper to the rank of a great monarch, fawned upon l»e- eause he crushed out liberty in Bu But now he is firm in his ex rope. alted neat of power, he commences an undercurrent of intrigue against tho interests of England in every Europe- an State, and hnjrland finds the l.m- sti|ulations to remain a free port. Thus ends a ontroversv whirh at one time threat ened to involve iu war the two might iest nation* upon the earth. THRII.LINU INCIDENT—NARROW ESCAPB FROM A on Sunday morning last, about three o'clook a tire broke out in a tenement bouse, No i)2 lluinersley street, which came near proving very diunutroui. The flames rapidly ascended the stair csee ,thu8 cutting oft* the escape of the families oocupying the upper stories. The first floor was occupied by William Doni ally, wife and three children they all effected their escape in safety. Mr. John Collins occupied apartments on the second floor, fronting on the street, with his wife and six children it was found impossible to escape any other way than by the window. He first low ered his wife and children to parties on the udjoining stoop, and then tollowed himself they all got out without injury. The unfortunate occupants of tho third floor, however, did not fare so well. The front rooms on this floor, were oc cupied by widow McPhillips und her five children, together with two young women, named Margaret Lynch and Elizabeth Cornej, boarding with her: The sight was one of appalling inter est— the mother with hor five children huddled at one window, screeching in tone-, of the deepest terror for help, while the two women were calling loudly for help at (he other. Thoott in the street kept calling to them not to jump out, us the firemen would soon be there with a litddor, but they appenred to heed tho udvico but little, making ef forts to cet outside the window. At this time flames were seen burnting into the room. Scream after scream rent the sir, and a rush was made for the ladder. The firemen were unable to ex trioate all at once, and Margaret Lynch missed the ladder and fell to the side walk. The force of the full broke her thigh. The other girl, ElizuLeth ('orney, also fell from the window, injuring ber self dangerously, if not fatally. The firemen succeeded io rescuing Mrs. While the firemen were extricating the inmates of the third story, Mr Duffy was busily sssisting his wife and children out of the back windows on the same floor. Some escaped to the adjoining bouse by passing from one window to the other—a very dangerous exploit— but the emergency of the case requires it and it was done in safety. Some of the family succeeded in climbing from the window to the roof, there being no step ladder to enable an escape from the scut tle to the roof.—Cin. Enq.
