Dnrmport, Jta S3, 1868 *h lllinjc AooouDt of the jUuiuiik oftho It'lh Bands— lie otaat of Lo uopi We have already published a tele-1 graphic account ot tbe hurnin^ of the Marsh .Satii«, an iron ship of The vnyHffe 2000 totH burden, whilo conveying .troop froin England to India. Wo obt*m from the Lf»n«lon Times following addition al and inoat ioivresting purtKulaiB. appear* to have been fa vorable until the II th of November, when the hhip had reached latitude 14 south and loogitude 50 east (upward* of 400 inilei from the Mauritus Al»ctit two o'clock in tho afternoon of of that day, the troop* berthed on the after orlop deck noticed a smell of I burning that apparently proceeded from beneath them 111 tt»e hold. It rapidly increahing the alarm watt given to Cahtle, who at once ordered the af ter hold to be exttmiried, and to the astonishment and horror of all, th cargo, stowed there proved to be on I fire. It ih stated that the bulk of the cargo consisting of go/eminent htori^. i liale after bale was ha1 led up in the hope of getting at the scat of the lire: but in a rhort time the smoke became so dense as to defy any of the crew getting further iuto the hold. There was no confunion, however every order wasobe}cd by the men with coolness and courage. The course of the ship wju» htopped. Col. Moffat was seen in earnest consultation with Capt. Castle deciding uppon measures for Mipreb&ing the flames, while the crew were actively employed in taking all the sails in and bringing the !-iiij before the wind. tlier» ran out lengths of hose from the lire engines, which were passed down to hand* be low, while hose was put on the donkey engine. It soon became apparent that all these exertions failed in cheeking the progress of the fire. Col. .Moffat at the suggestion of the 'ommnnder, directed his men at oiwe to cast over board ail the ammunition, and in a short time they Miececded in charing out the starboard magazine. The re mainder of the powder, however, exci ted great apprehension.*. Already had the after part of the ghip become almost unapproachable from the dense smoke nnd heat which filled every por tion of it. The Col. appealed to Ii in men for volunteers to attempt to rev cue the contents of the magaziue now so threatened. Several brave fellows instantly came forward and heroically succeeded in reaching the magazine, and clearing it, it is supposed v/ith the exception of one or two barrels of pow der. It was truly hazardous work, several nearly lost their lives, they be came overpowered with the heat and smoke and fell, and when hauled upon deck by ropes were kcnseles*. The flames soon afterwards burned up through the deck, and running along the various cabins soon set the whole on tiro. There was a heavy gale blow ing at the time, and Capt. I astle per ceiving the critical position of the ship at once took measures for the safe lowering of the boats. They were launched without the least accident, the troops were mustered on deck, there was no rush to the boats and the men obeyed the word of command with as nni'di order, as if they w ere on parade. Col. Moffat informed them that Capt. Castle did not despair of saving the ship, but for their own prcscvation it had been deemed advis able to keep the boats oil" so as to act in a casa of emergency. The ladies, women and children were lowered into the port life boat, and she was directed to stand oil" until further orders. All hands then turned constructing rafts of spare spaib. In a short time three were put together which would have been capable of sav inga larne portion of those on board. Capt. Castle succeeded in launching two overboard, and the third was left across the deck to be lowered at a mo ment's notice. In the meanwhile, the flames had made terrible progress, the whole of the cabins, saloon, were one body of tire, and about 9 o'clock the flames burst tnrough the upper deck ami i^iitcd the iniz/.en rigging. Through the forethought of Capt. Cas tle in bringing the ship to the wind the fire and smoke were swept stem ways, but serious anxiety was felt lest the ship should pay oil, and so render her destruction inevitable. During this fearful suspense a dreadful explo sion took place, no doubt arising from one or two barrels left in the port mag azine, which blew out the port quarter. The ship from the main rigging to her stern was in one general body of fire Capt. Castle still had hope, although he expressed his fears to the command ing officer of the troops that the ship would be lost. Providentially the bulk head of the after part of the ship with stood the action of the flames. Here all efforts efforts were concentrated to keep it cool. Party after party of the troops volunteered tor the work, an I so endeavored to prevent the fire from making its way forward. For hours did this state of affairs continue. Althongh tbe men kept the fire at bay below, it gained the main rigging. Mr. Welch, the chief officer, with several of the soldiers, at ouce went aloft with wet blankets, and af ter considerable peril and risk succeed ed in extinguishing the flames. As is was. however, some, some of the yards were destroyed. Towards 2 o'clock the following morning the men had the satisfaction of seeing the fire dim inishing. Tbe flames were gradually beaten back, and by daylight were en tirely extinguished. It was not until then that the fearful havoc made by the fire was clearly ascertained. The after part of the ship was burnt out— merely its shell remaining, aud no"w another fate threatened her. The gale still prevailed and the ship wa9 rolling and pitching in a heavy sea, constant ly shipping water at the part quaitcr which had been blow nout by the ex plosion. She had lo feet of water in her hold, and active steps were neces sary to prevent her foundering. All the men were set to the pumps and bailing water out of the held. Capt. Castle, fearing the item would fall out got two hawsers under the bottom and made them taut. The next difficulty was to stop the water which was pour ing w through the quarter. Spare •ails and blankets were placed over th* opening and the leak was partially •toppM* liter* vm no abatement in the gale during the morning, and in every heave of the ship the water tanks in the bold which bad got loooe were dashed from one «ide to the other.— Tbe state of the ship, and the continu ed severity of the weather rendered the constant working of the pumps imperative. It was not till 2 o clock i'i the afternoon that the boats con taining the women and children could bo got alone side. They were got on board, and the other boats, which had brn-n ordered otf during the raging of the fire, returned, with the exception! of the sr'g, which had born swamped during the night: the officer in chaipe of her, however, Mr. Wood, and all hand*, were picked up by another boat. During tiie remained of the day, the following night *nd the succeeding, dav, the whole of the hands and troops wei engaged working the pumps and clearing the ship 1 ot evening of the l^Jth tho crew suc*eded in securing the stern and getting steer age-way on the ship. She then dnf -d as far as longitude 13 dcgi»., 12m., South. Capt. Castle then set ail sail and bore up i i the hope of making Mauiitiuf, and to the y of all on board made the port in days, v.here her arrival and marvelous escape ex cited eon&Mer. ble sensation.
