THE NEWS. JMQM T. Orozicr, «f Delhi, Dela ware oonnty, was killed by the aceidun tal discharge of a can ol j.owder, wliicb he held in hift hand. It peemnthat lie was one ol a party who were firing oil an anvil in honor of the fourth, and on touching it oil' at one time, it ini.Hsed tire lor an instant. He then earelessly stooped over it,'and poured more pow der on it, when it ignited the whole can, lie ran a lew steps after the ex plosion, and died hhortly alter. It is suppoaed he must have inhaled some of it, as he was not badly scorched otherwibe. The fourth was celebrated in Dubu que by a procession, reading of the Declaration and two orations. The Eaithjuakctt" were also out in their glory. On Saturday, June 20th, Thomas Donaghue, a farmer of Washington township, came into Dubuque with Mr. L. Hurley and bought some shingles, which lie got Mr. llurley to haul out, with himself, lie, it appears by the evidence, had a jug and llask of whis ky with him of which he partook. Mr. Hurley left him and his goods at the crossings of the roads, wheie he turn ed otl to his own home. Mr. I onaghue wished him to take him home, but he refused. After sitting there some time, a far mer named James Gibbons came along with his team, and Donaghue, in a drunken mood, pointed iiis umbrella at him and told him to stop or he would shoot him—keeping his other hand in his pocket. iibl»oiis, by the testimony, and by his own confession, jumped out and kicked him several times violently, and then left him. On the next morn ing Mr. S. Wilson, of Table Mound township, found the deceased in a de bilitated, weakened state, leaning against the fence, and got him to go to his house where he washed himself and ate some pie, and afterwards laid down i'i the barn, where he died in a short time. A post mortem examina tion was held by Drs. Win. Watson and B. McClure, and it was found that he came to his death by the fracture of the parietal and temporal bones of the head. Coroner Leist held an impiest, and the verdict was to that etl'ecl, in flicted by some peisous unkuown. On Thursday night last, says the Bloomington I'autayraph, Morton, k CM*. Henry Wickiin was re-arrested on Monday morning abont twenty-five miles from town. The horses were much jaded when taken from the run away. The otlicers are on the track of the remainder of the gang, and strong hopes are entertained that they may soou be overhauled. A fire occurred in a confectionery and fancy goods store in 1'eoria, III., which destroyed the building and con tents, and very nearly resulted in the loss of a number of lives. A large quantity of fire works were stored 111 the buildiug, which exploded iti all di rections. It appears that a serpent was lighted on the sidewalk, which forced its way into the store among the fire works, and immediately every thing was in a blaze, explosion follow ing explosion like the discharge of heavy musketry. The salesroom was crowded with customers, and not less than a hundred ladies and gentlemen with several chidreu were at the same time partaking of cream in the saloon. Instantaneously this scene of social happiness and pleasure was converted into one of horror and dismay but, although many were severely bruised and nearly sutl'ocated, providentially, not a life was lost! A severe storm visited Minneapolis, Mm., on the 1st inst. The wind blew a perfect hurricane, upsetting chimney's prostrating crops, and doing other damage. The steeple of the new Bap tist Church was blown dowg, .and the edifice was oterwise damaged to the amount of $1,000. There were three fatalities in Grant Wifc, last waek. James Nagle, an cm citiaen met his death by au injury onniainnd by falling off a cart—a ffkaal tit wkiw passed over his body. A AY TLM MOM of Meacham, in MlMRMMl cide by hanging and an infant daugh ter of Mrs. (ireen 'of l'otosi, '20 months olds, died last week from the eficcts of a scald. Wright Newcomb, at Beloit, Wis., had fifteen hundred dollars btolen from them by a man that they had recently taken into their employ as a clerk. A man named Kempton owner of the American Hotel at Defere, Brown county, Wis, has been examined on the charge of arson in setting fire to his own hotel, to collect the insurance money, and held to bnil in the sum ol^ |f,000 to stand trial. In default ol bail, he was committed to jail. Abner Smith, lately postmaster at NortJitield, Boon county, lud., has fx-cn conuctod of robbing the mails, and sentenced to ten years' confine ment in the State prison. By the conflagration in the town ot St. Andreas, Cal., on the 2d ult., prop erty to the amount of •210,000 was destroyed. About one-fifth of this fall* upon the Chinamen. Louie Acquitted* The great "champion of freedom Kansas," commander in chief of Mont gomery's band of cut throats, and Brig adier General of the 'free state militia,' with a whitewashed character, is again let loose in the Territory of Kansas. With no cause or provocation he coolly and deliberately shot and killed Col. Gains Jenkins, a free state neigh bor who came upon a claim, which was in dispute between them, for a pail of water. The whole neighbor hood, including Jenkins, had been ac customed to visit the well for water but on this one occasion the "great champion of freedom," being for some caube, out of humor, refused to allow him to get it and killed him for coining upon his grounds. His previous carccr had bem a se ries of outrages, murders and robberies to sustain which, contributions were levied upon the benevolence of the people, under the plea of relief to "bleeding Kansas," For a period the outrages and robberies were shrewdly planned and the entire country resoun ded with execrations of the "border ruilians" at whose doors this estimable freedom shriekor managed to lay the blame of his rascalities. Up to this point, and in all of these transactions, he was sustained and complimented by the Republican press. Their columns were filled with glowing accounts of his valorous deeds in the holy cause of freedom and on his travels through the country with his band of vagabonds from New Kngland, he was received with speeches and congratulations by the republican wire pullers. But finally growing bolder, his out rages were committed with less cau tion and the true state of affairs became too evident to be concealed but last, and worst of all for his reputation with the hosts of freedom, he added to the list of murders and outrages committed by bin band, the henious crime of in subordination to tho wire pullers of the party and a determination to be Sena- tar from Kansas, in defiance of their plans to the contrary. For this he was jomed by the Junta but no conve nient opportunity presenting itself for his decapitation, they were obliged, for a time, tacitly to sustain him. Finally, the golden moment arrived, when Lane murdered his free state neighbor, and it was seized with avidity. The papers which but a month or two before were filled with laudation of "the valiant Lane," immediately teemed with vio lent abuse and the entire party de nounced him in the words of the Chi cago Tribune, into your yard for a pail of water is jnsti(iabiv homicide." Thus, with a whitewashed character Brigadier General Jim. Lane is again in the field, prepared again to lead on the hosts of freedom to battle with the border ruffians. Upon the whole, considering the exigencies which have arisen since the plans to choke off Lane were laid, we arc not entirely certain but that the republican wire pullers will be rather pleased than otherwise at his escape from the banging which he so richly deserved. Their party having no co hesive principle is split up and divi ded into factions in every state in the Union, and many frauds and stealings and rascalities by republican officers, having come to light, some new Kansas excitement' or some additional bor der ruffian outrages" are imperatively demanded to keep the ranks together for the approaching state elections.— We may therefore expect soon to see Lane reinstated in his former position until the plans of the leaders are ac complished and some new opportunity to throw him over, presents itself. Tbiugs which the peopla •Tinuld know. Hitherto we have refrained from com menting upon the acts of individual members of the City Council, from the belief that the aggregate city indebted ness, the heavy taxes, and the general financial embarrassment of all classes of people, wonld tend to restrain reek* less expenditures in unimportant local* itiea, made for the individual benefit of tht Aklemuui who fttwtnd DM appro* in priationa. We farther believed that all professed democrat$ to himself. as a "violent and pestif erous demagogue andrascal." The result of his examination fet murder has, however, been different from that which was anticipated. It was supposed that he was forever out of the way, or as the New York bune remarked, olios Tri 41 politically, socially and physically a doomed man." But the recent advices from Kansas, state that by some hocus pocus he has been discharged,—a decision being rendered that the shooting of a man who comes would be gui ded by the golden rule of tho party, namely, an economical administra tion of government." But we have been disappointed in one or two men in our City Council, calling themselves democrats. We allude to Aid. Sears and Aid. Mackintosh—the former too much under the influence and control of certain financial operators to act a manly and independent part, and the i latteb so deeply wedded to his own personal aggrandizement in improving his large landed estate upon Harrison street, as to utterly ignore the wretch ed condition of our finances, and the groans of a tax-ridden public, and car ry on, at the public expense, improve ments upon his private property, ttiat will not be needed for public use for years to come. Aid. Sears is, to a very great extent, responsible for the extravagance of last year's expenditures. The confidential servant of George B. Sargent, he read ily undertook the engineering of all matters through the Council which his master directed. Under the loan of 1100,000 for street work, contracts were let amounting to over $150,000, utterly regardless of prices, or how or when the contractors would be ulti mately paid. Without any legal right, money specially appropriated by a vote of the people f.r improving the levee and establishing water works, was ta ken and appropriated to other uses, and so large an indebtedness created, above the uj.pivariations, as to require a tax of $8H,000 to be levied this year upon a people poorly prepared for such a levy. All this was done through the joint contrivance of Sargent and his man Sears. To compensate him, a street called Bridge Avenue, at the top of which dwells Aid. Sears, was excavated at an expense of thousands of dollars, and our City Bonds placed in the hands of AM. Sears for sale, he reserving for his ser vices, besides his salary, various sums amounting iu all, as allowed by the Council, to the following sums July 2-1 Aug. i 1. H. Sears, sale or bcndti. $ 600 00 376 1,000 00 50100 1!H 45 "7 JO 00 150 00 Oct 21 Veb Amoautliif la alt to $3,430 04 A snug little sum considering that the ordinance fixing the salary of Al dermen expressly provides that ¥200 shall be in full of all fees and compen sation for duties of Alderman. The Mayor selected his "tool" as agent for sale of bonds, for reasons best known There other expenditures which this alderman has caused of which we shall speak in future. Aid. Mackintosh is another specimen of etjual celebrity. From 5th to Lo cust street he has cansed the erection of public lamps as thick as the stars in the milky-way. There are no less than 49, at an annual cost of to each post or €1,T0-4 in all, and this in cludes eight lamps in the woods near the dwelling of Mr. Mackintosh, one of which is located in the rear of his yard. bam Thus above 5th street upon Harrison t^ie public lamps cost nearly one fourth of the annual expenditure by the city for gas. This is exceed ingly profitable to Aid. Mackintosh and his lots, but a i.ax ridden people en quire, cui bono Under a joint committee for employ ing laborers to work upon streets, AM. Mackintosh is grading untravellcd and unopened cross streets upon his land, cutting ditches, fcc., in a locality where the work will not be needed for years for public use. Under the same plan Aid. Sears is grading Bridge Avenue by quarrying rock and macadamizing Front street at the expense of the city, while in all other cases, owners of ad joining lots have paid for such work. If this system of reckless extravagance is to be pursued, where shall we end with bankruptcy staring us in the face and the people groaning under the burthen of a heavy tax. We deem the conduct of these men wholly un justifiable and so we believe the people will think. We shall have more to s»y about these aud kindred topics hereafter, The Democratic State Tic^el. MB. EnrroR: The ticket nominated by the Democratic State Convention, on Thursday last, And which yon have placed under your editorial head, is, in all respects, an excellent one. The candidates are well lo cated, and, in every caae, reliable Demo crats, and men of sterling integrity of char acter. Judge Douglas, who heads the tick et, for the post of Secretary of State, is a resident of Beuton county, in the Cedar Kiver Valley, some fifty mile north of Iowa City. His name was presented to the Con vention by the united delegations from the northern part of the State, who, without an exception, endorsed him as a good Demo crat, and a good man. He was present at the Convention, and addressed it, after his nomination, making a very favorable im pression upon that body. He is a large, well built man, with a frank, open expres sion of countenance, and apparently be tween forty and forty-five years of age.— His friends warmly urged his nomination, and those who met him for the first time were at once prepossessed in his favor. Theodore S. Tarvin, the present highly popular Register of the State Land Office, waa nominated without a competitor, and by acclamation forState Auditor. All men, political opponents as well as friends, con cede that he has discharged the duties of Register with scrupulous fidelity and no one will undertake to question his equal fit ness for the position of Auditor. There is not a man in the State better suited to that post Mr. Parvio's residence to in Musca tine, on the Mississippi. S. H. Lorer, nom inated by the Convention for the responsi ble position of State Treasurer, resiaes in Cass countv, on th« "Missouri Slope," and is about nfty-ftvs years of ago. He was warmly aadornd by several geaOemea whose ripr—miMM we regards! as p» fsctly reliable, and who bad, SSOse of then, known him year* ago, in OMe—where he held positions of responsibility and trust, before becoming a eitisen of Iowa a thorough, consistent Democrat, end an in telligent, honest man, who. if elected, wonld faithfully discharge the lutiee of the office. The residence of J. M. El wood, Esq., our candidate for Attorney General, is in Dee Moines, the present capitol of the State.— While his private character and his Democ racy are above assault, his abilities, and le gal knowleli?e, it is admitted by hit politi cal opponent* even, abundantly fit him for the position indicate'!. The nominee for Commissioner of the Dee Moinea Kivir im provement, Chnrier Baldwin, reeides in Ke osauijua, Van Bur»n county, and Is an in telligent merchant, of thorough business ha Kits. The d'l^gation from that county, Mesarr. Knapp, liailey, Bouney, Ac., were utianituoiH i» asking his nomination, whk-li was conceded without competition, and ly acclamation. "Last but not leist," for Reg ister of the Slate Land 'dice, we have upon the ticket our own |opulur young townsman, an arJeut, talented supporter of the Demo cralic cause, through evil report as well as good, in adversity as well aa pro«|erity, James M. Keiil. The five nominees first above named hav ing been agreed upon, it was claimed by many that the young Democracy of the State—largely and ably represented in the Convention—were justly entitled to a rep resentation upon the ticket, and as general ly agreed that '"Old Lee," her "empire county,'' was a very good |oint for him to hail from. Accordingly, on the first ballot, Mr. lieid hud 1 fti votes, against 30 or 40 each, thrown to some three or four other#, and tlu ii received, by acclamation, the nom ination of the Convention. This position of Ueinster of fltate Laud Office, it need hardly be mentioned, is one of much importance to the I?s Moines Val ley, and the citizens of Keokuk, in connex ion with our lo'jal interests, as will be read ily understood by those who reflect a mo ment Upon the subject. It is in the pi wer of the Democracy of Iowa, by "a lont pull, a strong pull, and a pull altogether'" to elect lh* above ticket. Let us thoroughly organize, and do it! THE NEXT NEWS KKOJI UTAH —The last in telligence from Carnp Scott represented (ien. Johnston at about to niercli with his whole army—three thousand strong—into Suit I^ike City, in two days He has been reinforced by (Japt. Marcv's command from Santa Fe, and the supply trains of Col. Hoff man from Fort Leavenworth his men w^re in tine condition, and his stock of uniiiials complete. The fiovernor and Peace Com missioners had already preceded him. The entrance of the army into the capital of the "Saints" will p'lt the intentions of the Mor mons to a practical test. Their threat, will be remembered—that he appearance of the soldiers within the capital should be the signal for converting Salt Lake City into another Moscow. We shall see whether they will carry out that intention. We know nothing of what has been lioin? in side of the city, except from the statements of the Mormons themselves: for Governor Cumming was ignorant and foo ish enough to excluile the newspaper correspondents— a fact which is in itself evidence that he is not the man for the iniss:on he is upon. He ought to know something of the nature and value of the newspaper press, and the pop ular desire to te informed through that me dium upon ull matters of public importance. Mr. Cumming ught to have been born in Austria or Turkey, or some country where the press withers under the blight of cen sor hip. From the intelligence we have been able to gather, it is clear that the question of re sistance to our troop? is a mere party one in Utah, and, moreover, that the party lines are drawn pretty close. The peace men— among whom Brigham Young chances to be—have a small majority but the war party is still a forrnid ible one—the more so because it comprises the men who made the largest sacrifices for the cause, who have lost their all for it, and are therefore unwil ling to give it up without a struggle. The men who came obedience to the call of the Church from C.trson Valley, San Bar onrJino ai other points, wheie they had accumulated fortunes—all of which are now lost forever—are not likely to submit quiet ly, and go forth into exile without making an effort to retain some foothold on the soil of I'tali. If the city should be burned on the approach of the army, we should not be surprised to see these men take to the moun tains, turn guerillas, and keep up such har assing assaults on the troops that another Florida war may be the result. In the partial exodus of the Mormons southwards, we do not recognize any cer tain indications that they mean to abandon the Valley altogether. It is more probable that they will settle at l'rovo aud other small settlements around, in the hope that the army may be withdrawn, when they calculate to return and enjoy their own again. Perhaps their leading men s, e far ther into the movements of the Indians on our western frontier than we do—if they are not the instigators of some of the hostile manifestations, which, if they continue, will necessitate the employment of our army at other points besides Salt Lake Valley. If this should turn out to be so, it will prove that (ien. Johnston was right iu urging the immediate advance ot the army into the city, and that (iov. Cumming wa9 wrong. Following the example of Millard Fill more, Gov. Cumming has adopted a tem porizing policy, and the Mormons are most likely humbugging him as they did them. Iu view of these things, the next news from L'tah will be of the highest interest per haps the most important yet received from that quarter. DISOBDBB IN TIIK UEI'BL'UCAN FORCES.—Dis order and dismay pervade the ranks of the Republicans in this district, which will soon 1 reak out into open hostility.* In nomina ting Mr. Vandever they set aside every prominent worker and politician iu their own ranks.
