A most brutal murder was commit ted in Klk River township, Clinton county, in thin State, uu \V. ilnc^lnv |Mt. The name of the murderer i» Thomas O'Hrian, who is a lar^e and malicious looking Irishman of :tU to V,'i years of age. lie has been a resident of .Clinton county about a year, having come thither from Illinois he is a hard working man when sober, 'out of course •the divil" when drunk he confessed the murder that he, with another Irishman, took a bottle of liijuor to his house, and Mrs. T»rian objected to Iheir drinking it and carousing in the house that he for this slight provoca tion, struck her Beveral times with a •mall pine stick. She went outside, Und while sitting on the grass he went out and beat and kicked her in the breast. A neighbor .seeing 'Brien leaving with a carpet sack, and suspi cionmg something wrong, (knowing the unfriendly manner in which they had lived together,) induced him to re turn with him, when they found the dead body about ten rods from the house beaten and bruised in a brutal manner. The post mortem examina tion showed seven bruises in the arms and head, aud npon the throat as if from choking. She was hale and hearty in the morning—in the evening a corpse, leaving lour ^iiihII children. The neighliors gathered and guarded the murderer in his bonne .some threat ening to hang hi in, bat they desisted on better thought. Word being brought to Lyons offi cers were sent out and the murderer brought in. On Thursday lie was sent to the County jail at be Witt. The young t^ueen of Portugal, who was lately married by proxy in her (terman home, is making a bridal tour alone, in a Portuguese war steamer. She has spent some time in Kngland, and has received every attention from Victoria. In a leisurely way she is making her way towards Lisbon, the:e to meet her husband whom she has never seen. A modern llebecca, with A steamship for her camel, and a king for a Isaac! A monument is about to be erectcd at Southampton, Kngland, to Dr. Watts. Lord Palmerston has ottered a subscription to the fund. A brother to J. L. ttarey, the "horse tamer," who is now as astonishing the people of Kngland with his performan ces upon unbroken and vicious hordes, is giving similar exhibitions in Cincin nati. Another brother is trying his hand upon vifiious Indianapolis horse flesh. They all appear to be success ful. Advices fron San Juan del Norte, •tate that the people of that place had again been galvanized into an excite ment on transit route matters by the arrival of the steamship Cranada with Messrs. Allen and Webster—Commo dore Vanderbilt's envoy and agent— on board. These gentleman would, it was said, set to work to open the route immediately. Tliev landed some steam ship machinery and cadi. The amount of money is stated differently by vari ous reports of ranging from $lii0,0UO down to ilUOjlJOU. Mr. Scott had been reconciled to the Commodore, and the Webster drafts all paid so it was thought M. Belly had better look sharp if he wished to reap the fruit ot bis late negotiations. The Nic.araguan govutumunt had duly commissioned Mr. W. L. Miller to receive the lake steamers purchased from Costa Rica by Commodore Vaiulerbilt. We have interesting news from St. Domingo. The conditions of abdica tion agreed upon between Bacz and Santana, through the intcivention of the French, Knglish aud Spanish consuls, and Baez's address to the na tion on his departure froiu the country, are given. Baez was at Curacoa at last accounts, bnt would shortly leave for St. Thomas, from whence h« would proceed to Europe. Mary llartung, the yonng German woman who poisoned tier husband, Emil, in Albany, N. Y., during the lat ter part of April, was arrested a few days since, at a place called («ratten burg, in the State of New Jersey, and some six or seven miles north of tiobo ken. She murdered tier husband, so aa to live with her paramour, Wm. Ehinman, who is now in prison, for being accessoiy to the murder. She escaped at the time, but recently wrote to her lover, and some one else got the letter, and in that manner they found her. She is now in jail at Allany, is about twenty six years of age, and is attractive in appearance. A few days since a house of Mr. E. Charles at New Auburn, Minnesota, waa consumed by fire, and his brother was burned to death. IIebb, Esq. is a young man, with au intellect far in advance of his years, and an amount of profess ional knowledge, rarely seen tn one o^ his age. A native of the State of Maryland and born with in a few miles ot Mason and Dixons line, he is eminently conservative iu his views, maintaining a just medium between the fanaticism of the extreme of the North and the ultraism of the extreme South. Graduating with the first honors of his class, in an institu tion distinguished for the ample course of instruction it prescribes, and for the rigid examination it imposes upon all who seek its rewards, his scholastic attainments are of the first order and of the most varied range. Admitted to the bar after a severe course of study, under a preceptor eminent and successful in his profession and exact towards his students. Mr. Ilebb iu 1855 immigrated to this state and lias since that time been a resident of the City of Muscatine. Methodical in his habits, assiduous in his attention to business aud devoted to his profession. Mr. Ilebb has already reached a com manding position at the bar. Should he be elected District Attorney of this Ju dicial District (of which by the way, we have no menner of doubt) wc feel safe in saying that he will discharge its onerous and frequently unpleasant du ties, with a just regard to the interests of the State and the rights of individ uals. We challenge a comparision with Ilenry O'Connor, the Republican can didate for the same office. The Union Party. The movement for the formation of a new piwty, to lie composed of the fag ends of all parties and intended as a substitute for the Republican partv, is still in progress. One N. Sargent has been during the past month or two, and is, engaged in flooding the coun try with circulars proposing the plat form npon which it is wished all the the elements of opposition to the pres ent National Administration and to the Lemocracy shall meet. Its platform includes, the Critten den Amendment," a high Protective Tarifl," an extended period of resi dence as a requisite to the natnraliza- tion of foreigners,' etc. etc. Then arae by which this new amalga mation of Al o! tionism,Whiggery and Know Nothingism is to be known, is the Union Party." The movement is supposed to have an eye to the nomination of Crittenden forPresident in eighteen hundred and sixty. We shall refer again to the subject. Doubtkul Gomi-umknt.—Mr. swimmer. Fba/.kr River—A Die- king Rkoio.v.—A rh-tion ok the Mi work of Mr John Dunn, on the Oregon Territory, published iu London, iu 1«J4, furuishea us wi»Ji a description of the country lying along both tides of Fra zer river, which cannot fail to prove inter esting. He eays "The country along it* lower section i* hilly, ami covered with forest* of white pine, cedar, ami other evergreen trees, ami the soil is generally well fitted foi pasturage, and, in n.any places. Ion tillage. IJut along the other and more northern *ections, the country is more unge dnl and unproductive, being cut up by mountains, ravines, torrents, iukes and mar-dies. Yet it is well wooded, yeil iing all the varieties of trees growing in that reirioii—fir, spruce, pine, poplar, willow, cedar, Cyprus, birch and elder." liut, iu all probability, the l^ost impor tant information at t'lis time, which Mr. Dunn furnished, relates to the climate, tin thia subject he remarks "The elimate i* very variable, and the transitioiiH are, though periodically regular, remarkably niddeii/if i.ot violent. During the spring, which lasts from April till .lune, the weather and the face of the countra are delightful. I" June there are almost inces naiit rain*, drifted fur iously along bv strong eolith winds. In July and August the heat ia intense, and the ground, previously satu rate.1 with moisture, produces myriads of flic and insects which are very annoying. This heat and glaring sunshine are succeed ed in September by fogs of pueli palpable darkne^ that until noon it is seldom possi ble to distinguish objects at a longer dis tance than one hundred yards. In Novem ber the winter sets in speedily, freezing the lakes aud smaller rivers. The cold, howev er, is not po intense as might be imagined in such a country and climate." Next totheexten' and richnesp of the new gold mines, the most iin|ortant inquiry is as to the character of the climate. It must he confessed that Mr. Dunn doe» rot draw a very flattering picture of the country in that reepect, and his long residence there is a guarantee of the correct ness of his state ments. It Is the concurrent opinion of all who have written from thu new mines re cently, that mining operations will have to be suspended for a month or so, in conse quence of the ri-ing of Fnzer river. The incest-.mt ruins, which, according to Mr. Dunn, occur in the month of June, will cause the liver to rise much higher than it was at last dates. Intense heal will follow in July and August—dense fogs in Septem ber, aud in November winter sets in, and continues until the beginning of April, llow many months out of the twelve, mining operations can be carried on ia such a cli mate, time alone can develop. In this par ticular the new Kldorado cau^never equal California. Here the miner, if he has waUr, can work to advantage for very nearly 11 months out of the 12 but if he should have lUo or 140 working (lays, in the Hritish Possessions, out of the whole year, it is probable he will have reason to be thankful. IIeat ami In is Truiv—A sensible license of dress is permitted in Turin, and people walk about iu straw hats of all colors and forms, in linen coats and light garments of all kinds, which, in London, Caris, and even iu that pretentious little bakehouse of a capital, Madrid, would be voted incorrect ami almost shocking. The abundance of ice is also a help to preserve humanity from melting, or at least to refresh it when under the process. There are great puns or ponds round Turin, which are tilled with pure water, with the express view of its conver sion into ice—a conversion winter obliging ly accomplishes free of charge. To see the (uantities which, for months, were, duv af ter day, brought in'o town, one would im agine that the whole of Turin had an under ground rtoor of ice houses. The price is exceedi/igly low the ven ders do not condescend to weigh it, but give a huge block for two or three sous, (iene rally speaking, it is perfectly clean, ami as transparent as crystal. It is cheap enough to be in common :'se among the poorer class es, aud one sees fruit women eating their dinner by their stalls with a great chunk of ice in their drinking jugs. The evenings are, until 10 or 11 o'clock, nearly as warm as the days, and the demand for frozen drinks in the caj\ Choate.wisb* Chirf Justice Shaw, ex- a?Q 1 "P00 the venerable la UrSlMfcAiMi ^l LLU.^y Uk« a Hiadoo be- uy« thsjr will probably have tlx At illll SSll^tiSr Ut liffw^^Sradedswiettee daring tha is something prodigious. A Hkave I'nci.e.—A correspondent of the Pittsburgh J'o»t relates the following touch ing incident: "As we left Pittsburgh in the cars, we observed n small hoy named Stitt, about twelve years of age, poorly clad, hut very intelligent, having with him an infant ten months old, the child of his sister, who died a few weeks ago. The lad hud brought, the infant from Iown City, where the mother died, and wascn his way to Harris burgh. The young uncle had cared for and nursed it all the way—weighty charge for one so young. It would not, perhaps have been so much remarked had a yonng girl been the custodian of the orphan babe but here was a mere boy, putting away childish things, find assuming all the cares and re sponsibility of a parent, during a journey of a thousand miles at least. The passengers manifested the greatest interest in the little wayfarer and his charge, the ladies especial ly in turn relieving the lad of his burden, as he appeared to be almost exhausted with his long journey. Such constancy and manliness in one of such youthful years is not often exhibited, and certainly well de serve* the name of beriosm."
