TRAVELLER'S GUIDE RAtLltOAbH, Ea«t, I^-ave at 8 55 u A ZiOOAl IIo i' at the Hop at the Bl rtis IIorsK.—It has been a long time since we attended as pleasant a gathering as assem bled at the liurtis House on Weudnesday evening to enjoy a tocial dance. The at tendance was not large, and crinoline did not suffer to that extent it has at some of the previous hops. The supper was a per fect jem in its way, and was enjoyed with zest by all who paitook of it. The dance was kept up untU about midnight, when all retired, satisfied that the liurtis House Hops are an institution that cannot be dispensed with. ISuch are our sentiments. A Case for the Charitable.— Thei e is in this city a family composed of three persons—a man, his wife and his mo. ther-in-law—who are actually and unavoid ably in astute of the utmost destitution.— The man is honest, industrious, sober, and a good workman at his trade, which is that of a carpenter. Being unable to find any employment, l:e has expended his whole savings, and for several days past the fami ily have been kept from actual starvation by the charity of the neighbors. We know these facts to be true. The man is willing to do anything by which he can support his family. Hi-* name and residence may be learned at this otllce. Dillon Trickery—A Deserved Exposure.—John F. Dillon, in the extraor dinary position in which he has placed through a packed convention dare not hesi tate to resort to the most dishonorable means of electioneering, to injure his op ponent, and secure his own success. He has gone into the highways and bye ways, among Irish Catholics, with false hoods and slanders upon his tongue, res pecting Judge Bennett, in order to induce the Irish Catholics to vote for him against Bennett. His two main misrepresetations are as follows: He aud hts hired agents and tools, repre sent that Judge Bennett is a Know Noth ing, which we are authorized to pronounce A WICKED AND BASE CALUMNY, with out shadow of foundation, and made by Dillon WHO WA9 ONE CF TUE MOST ACTIVE KNOW NOTHINGS IN TH* LODGE IN THIS CfXT If John 1'. Dillon, or his friends, will resort to such disgraceful methods of electioneer ing, we must eTpose the fraud. John F. Dillon, was and it a Know Noth ing, while Judge Bennett never toot a metn ber of the order. We believe we have good authcrity for this statement. The next dodge, of Dillon and bis friends against Judge Bennett, is, that in the Mc Carthy will case, in which the mill pro perty claimed by Judge Grant, was willed to the Catholic Church. Judge Bennett in his charge to the jury, leaned against the church and ia favor of Jndge Grant This charge is made to excite the prejudice of Irish Catholics, when in trnth and in fact there is not a particle of truth in the state ment Judge Leffingwell, who was Attor ney for th* ehureh, immediately after the Judge's eharge to the jury, said ia the pree •nee ofa number ot tha —bin of the bar "that is tho law," aad wai perfcati/w3l MOT 19 WM IM WHR WMi VOLUME 4. The plays were admirably foistuinei], and well appreciated by the au dience. They will perform to-night and to morrow night only—at the same place. Intkrmediatk School.—An exami nation will bs held to-niorrow in the stone school house, in District No. 2, of applicants for admission to the Intermediate of City High Schools. The Hoard are anxious that as many as possible enjoy the advantage of this school, and hence pressingly solicit all those desirous of entering it to present them selves promptly for examination. Exercises will commence precisely at 9 o'clock a. m. Although we apprehend no such danger, yet aa we are good natured, and disposed to be accommodating, we will comply with the request of our neighbors. We suppose however that it is well un derstood that the Time* is the orgun of the majority of the party, representing as it does the Grimes, Uorris & Co., and Hiram 1'rice, clique, in opposition to the email squad which comprises the Thorington clique and which has a mouth piece in the Gazette. When therefore we refer to the organ of the republican party in this city we wish to be understood as meaning to the Times, that paper representing the majority of the party. The Railroad Meeting this Eve ning.—Perhaps few realize the vast impor tance. the serious magnitude of the subject to be discussed this evening at the Council Chamber. We fear that timidity, short sighted and destructive economy, and mo tives of personal selfishnees will creep iu to mar or defeat the the plans which the pub lic consciousness craves aud approves. O that little men—fussy men—narrow-mind ed men—and timid men would stay away from such meetings, or if they go, go only to be converted to the knowledge of the true policy of our people upon vital ques tions. The questioa is for mora momentous than we cau now appreciate. It is simply whether we are to relapse into the lethargy of decoy, or adopt the remedies that will levelope our energies our resources and ca pacities, in activities that will double thrible, and quadruple the population, wealth, trade, and true greatness of our lovely city. Let our solid men for once see the true philosophy of greatness and prosperity. Let them look Abroad and compare the internal cities of the west with each other, and ob seve the growth of sonio, and the decay of others, and then ask what is the cause of the difference—and the answer will be RAILK •ADS. Memphis in the Slave State of Tennessee, with a population of 12,000 resolved one day to try the experiments of railroads, and now she has a population of 25,000 has (1,000,000 invested in railroads, and does an annual business of over 25, ooo.ooo. Her railroad policy is her true policy. Real Estate with the population at 12,000 that sold fcr ?10,000, now with a population of 25,000 and the immense trade is worth f70,000. This advance in value of real estate is always the result of activity in trade and growth in population. How can trade increase without the avenues of trade are opened by railroads V Let those who meet to night, be governed by that true economy which is found in liberal in vestment in works of internal improvement SCOTT COUXTY AGHICIILTVBAL ft'AlH. SECOND DAY. We are glad to say that ear antic i{iations were fully realized, and that the Fair grounds assumed a more flatter ing aspect yesterday. Large crowds of peop'.e assembled at the grounds, and a very respectable number of entries were made— more than at any previous exhibition of the Society The entries of cattle were not so numerous as we had hoped, but what was wanting in quantity was made up in quali ty. There were about 85 cattle of different grades and ages about 100 horses 25 swine, and 56 sheep. There were only two yokes of working oxen on the ground. The Agricultural implement department was fa vorably represented. W. W. Skinner A Co., S. Veite A Co., Davis, Watson Jt Co., and many others, contributed towards this de partment of the exhibition. Of farm produce we were sorry to notice that there was not a great variety, but the articles shown were very fine. We saw some excellent samples of wheat and other grain, which went to prove that our crop is not all bad. The samples of corn, potatoes, onions, Ac., were very fine—the best we have ever seen here. And as to garden vegetables, there was very tair supply, though not as much as wo oould wish to have seen. A City Musician.—Amongthe bills allowed by the Burliogton Common Coun. oil at its last meeting we see one W. M. Houseworth for filing tatct, $3 10. Not understanding how a city under any other hypothesis could need the services of a *aw filer, we presume that he must have acsed in the capacity of city musician. Would not it be a good idea for our eity dads" to establish a similar offiee, and have the eity musician with his saw and file attendance at each meeting of the Couneil. His performances would be quite aa intel lectual as most of the speeches made by the "great enjoined" and would l*» vaatly more agreeable to the public ear. Thk Kepuulican Organ of Scott County.—The Gautte is desirous that when we refer to the Timex as "the repub lican organ of Scott county" we should men tion particularly that we mean the Time*, lest perodventure the Gazette should get the credit for making statements with which it does not agree. At the hour of I test for the best place on the Bird %Mpa, near the grounds. There were nxta# catries made for the prizes. Class N. No. 3, boys wuler 10 years old. Wm. Daniel Madden, Wintield, age 14, first premium.—$5 By this it will bo seen that Winfield is the Banner Township. Every premium but one was taken by the hardy farmers and farmer's boys of thvt township. We are glad that the honors were gained by such worthy men. The time occupied in plow ing was not far from one hour and three quarters. This over, all proceeded to the' Fair Ground, where everybody was making themselves busy over stock and other arti cles of value. The country around about was moderately represented—as much so as could have been expected, 'considering no pains had been taken to eall the attention of the public to the fact thai there was to be a County Fair here at this time. The Union Brass Band was on the ground, and gave most excellent, music, besides dis pensing a creature comfort, for which the subscriber" felt under obligations at that time especially—for we was very dry. Gcod boys in that band sure. Our friend Tb. Holm entered his bass drum for a premium, and we hope he will get it Jacob Metzger provided all who were hungry—and a great many were, about noon —with a first rate dinner at a large and convenient stand, erected by him for that purpose. It was a good investment to buy a dinner at that place. At one o'clock |the different committees got together and went about examining en tries, and awarding premiums to such as they considered the most worthy of such awards. We took pains to ascertain a few of the articles upon which premiums were award ed. On thorough-bred stallions, (open for all) M. Cannon's horse France," drew the first premium. On thorough-bred stallions, the Flying Black Hawk, took the first premium, and Gitford Morgan, owned by Murphy of this city, the second. In this connection we would like to ask the committee how a Black-Hawk or Mor gan horse can be put down as thorough bred," and premiums awarded on them as such V The committee may understand how Buch a thing is done, but it is difficult for those posted in raising such stock to see through it That portion of the proceeding was extremely farcical. The first premium on carriage and buggy horses, was awarded to John M. Cannon on the gelding "Fillmore." On thorough bred brood marec, Mr, Can' non took three first premiums. On cattle, Philleo's large Durham Bull took the first premium, aa sweepstakes— from Port Byron, 111. DURHAM STOCK. Best Bull, 3 years old and upwards—Ca R. Marks, Davenport, first premium.
