The two men named ilall and (Salfley, whuae murder of Mr. Ifinton, In Oreene Co., 111., and subsequent trial and sentence, we noticed aoma time aW», were hanged at Carndton, in tliat county, on Wednesday of last week. The murderers were both young men, and laid the cauee of the crime to whiskey. It is stated that they were re signed to their fate and made a confession of their crime upon the sc»tYiid. Both were citizens of ireene county. The line of steamships of which the Aus tria was one baa been very unfortunate.— Tha Hammonia exploded her magazine, which compelled her, after leaving Ham burgh, to return to port. The Hormsia, of the same line, ot.ffe enme near foundering at aea from springing a leak, and the Saxomia ron down the pilot boat Jacob A. H'euter vtlt, by which two or three lives were lost. Mr. Hiram Pearson, of I'lainfield, Wilj coonty, 111, an old settler, died very sudden ly at that place on Thursday of last week. He was formerly a most worthy man, but has of late year* been cn en to strong drink, which oausad his death. At Quiney, 111., a man named Shreider died suddenly last week, and poison was suspected. The officer went to the house to arrest the wife of the deceased, when sbte ran into the back yard and jumptd into the cistern the officer also jumped in. and both were rescued by other parsons. The woman is on trial. We learn from theLaCroaue(Wi*.) l)em oerat, that the large ateam aaw and planing mill in North La Crosse, .-longing to E. K. The statement, that Mr, Lcffingwel) will oppoae the admission of Kansas under any Constitution properly fram ed and republican in its form, merely because it has not a population of ninety-three thousand, is, in plain Eng lish, and unqualified lie. The entire truth of the charge that Mr. Surveyor Varidever is a Know Nothing, and the perfect authenticity of the Kecords of the Dubuque Lodge ia now universally admitted by the re publican press—not because they did not know of it before and have recent ly leen convinced but because it is proven upoit them and a further denial would therefore be useless. They are now endeavoring to relieve their minds and throw the charges against Vandever into the shade, by bringing a wholesale charge against large numbers of democrats, that thev have been connected with the "dark lantern order." As a matter of course they do not produco any records and are totally unable to substantiate one of tlieii assertions. Jonah swallowing the Whale. The chances of Mr. Dillon ever since the day of his nomination have con tinued to grow small bv degrees and beautifully less, and now that the elec tion so nearly approaches, the organs of his clique having spent their strength in impotent attempts to whip tliu en tire republican party into a support of the frauds by which his nomination was secured, begin absolutely to rave and make themselves more ridiculous than before. They now, if we may believe thein, most earnestly hope that Hcnnctt men will leave the republican party wholly and forever—or in other words, they have read the supporters of Judge Bennett out of the party. Knowing that|more than one half of the Republicans of the District displeas ed at the means usod by Mr. Dillon to secure the nomination, and disgusted at the unfair manner in which he has electioneered, have determined to sup port Judge lionnctt, we are inclined to think that this reading ont process, will result very much like the attempt of Jonah to swallow the whale. The people are determined to admin ister a rebuke to the wire pullers and pipe layers. A triumphant majority is store for Judge Bennett the independent peo pled candidate on Tuesday next.' Something ^ew. In mean dirty low and imbecile blackguardism, we had supposed that the organ of the Thorington clique, in this city, could take the lead of all the papers in the State. YVe find howev er that it has an e.jua! if not a superi or in the Cedar Valley Times, the re publican organ of Linn county. The Tiineay during the contest, has poured ont upon the head of the Hon. I. M. The amount of decency possessed by the Timet may be demonstrated by the following extract from the attack to which we allude He was so poor when he first came here, that it was said he loas uctualy lousy!" Wonder der if he has cleaned ont the nits yeti" If the time has come when old resi dents of high character and great abil ity like Col. He is told that he'was once "lousy" and asked if he has cleared out the nits yet" merely because he was once poor. OH Civil war in Mexico has produced monstrous disaster. Seven or eight hundred per sons were psesent and the greatest en thusiasm v(as manifested. Speeches were made by the Hon. Winslow T. Barker and Mr. B, B. Richards of Dubuque. He died the same day. Mr. Garner was a respectable citizen, about forty years of age, and leaves a wife and five children. Enos was arrested aud brought to Burlington on Tuesday. TIGHT PLACI. —There is an old well at the upper end of Main stieet, Bnrlington, and iu it stands a wooden tube—sole remnant of the chain pump that once crowned it. On Saturday afternoon this tube was discovered to be in a terrible state of peiturbation. The neighbor*, go ing to the spot to ascertain the cause of so peculiar a circumstance, discover ed on the top of the water a drunken fellow, who had tumbled in, and was trying to walk the perpendicular tube, lie was resecued and taken home. WAKFAKE.—A couple of politicans in Keokuk on Monday rais ed their spirits so high by putting spirits down, that they soon displayed a very pugnacious spirit, and in an ar gument, one got so much excited as to give the other a name rejecting in a very ungenteel manner on his suppos ed ancestors. DEPOPULATION OF CRESCENT Crrv.— We learn from the Crescent City (Pot tawattomie County) Oracle, that a great excitement of the subject of the Pike's Peak gold mines exist there, and numbers of adventurers have left the western part of o«r State for the new El Dorado. MINHR OF A WELL IOWA.—The lead mines of Wisconsin and Iowa are just now yielding extraordinary quanti ties of mineral. Two young men at Fairplay, Wisconsin, are taking 30,000 pounds per diem from a lode which they have recently opened, and from which they have raised they have rais ed three million prounds. Mines in Grant county are also said to be exceed ingly rich. On the opposite aide of the river, in Iowa, Clayton county, and near Dubuque, lead mining pays better than gold digging.
