PBORIA MARINE AND FIRE TNAU- mwr Co.—We call attention to the ment of the condition of thia most excellent company, in another oolutii. Few companies in the western states or el new here can show e refer to the advertisement of Clias. Adams, of the Iowa Book Rooms, in a Hiiother place. Friend Eli has "fplit the difference" with his neighbor, and taken the north side, where he will continue t» La on baud—all the while. %W Daniel L. Shorey, E^q., of Davenport, will deliver the third lecture of the course in the trecoud Presbyterian Church, on Friday evening of this week January 28th, at half past seven o'clock. Subject, Society and the Individual.—H. /. Commercial. RESIONED.—We understand tlmt Mr. P. Merwin, the efficient Secretary of the Davenport Gas Light Coke Company, has resigned his office also that Mr. Leopold has resigned his position as Superintendent of the mechanical department—a place which has been nlle.i by him for a long time past in the most satisfactory manner. We hope the company will see fit to retain these gentlemen, as it would be difficult to find better ones. MAGNANIMOUS.—We are informed that a citizen ofl avenport employs a servant girl pays her $2.00 per week. She has occasion once in a while to spend an even ing away from home. For every evening so ubsetit she is charged 50 cents. If she is out three evenings she gets only 50 cents per week if out four evenings she gets nothing five evenings, and fhe allows her employer 50 cents for the privilege of working fix days. If such employers are not punished, what use is there of having a devil anyhow? X^We understand that Col. Burr of the firm of Burr «fc Swift has offered to become responsible for the expenses of print ing, rent, ike,, of the next concert of the Continental Choir, given for the benefit of the poor. Iu view of the object for which the concert is to be given, we trust there will be no expenses created. We are sure the printers will donate their labors, and there is no doubt that others will do the same. All honor to Ool. Burr, however. The poor have found m|iny warm friends this winter, and they willi continue to need their assis tance. In th|s .instance we hope to see a large sum of money raised for their benefit. VANDALISM.—We &C., learn that many persons have taken the privilege of cutting and hauling away large quantities cf wood from the island. They consider their right to it is as good as any else, inasmuch as it belongs to Uncle Sam. It is a little singular that the government agent, Mr. Slaymaker, has not the power or the authority to put a stop to this kind of proceeding. Every man who dares to iujure or destroy the timber on the island, should be at once arrested and made to understand that he has not the au thority to despoil it and lay it waste by any •ueh process. If this destruction continues| prompt and energetic action is required from the agent. Let the guilty parties be brought to justice without delay.—A'. J. Art/us. The ease of th« State of Iowa I'anl s Tliiwon, chafed with murder, occupied the entire attention of tin- Court yesterday. Hermau Deifs, John The.le, Kai ICowaM and Fred. Sehrneder, witnesses for State, were examined, which closed prosecution. To-day will be taken op the defence. The testimony does not vary very materially from that delivered before Jo*tiee McKown, which has heretofore been published in the DKMOCRAT. There was a large crowd— principally Germans—in attendance, who took great interest in the progress of the trial. It will^ccupy the Court for a day or two longer. The local editor of tbe Dabn- que E.rjiren* A Herald is responsible for the f-illowinir home thrust at some one of the editors of this State. How he got his in formation on the subject, deponent saith not: The Davenport Neva styles one of our late articles as being of the Yellowplush order. We were perfectly conscious of that fact aa the time we wrote it—but people, and particularly Reporters, frequently get into situations, and do and say things which are entirely inal apropos to their uaualjten denciea. A case of this sort was admirably iilustrated at Chicago not long since. A Knight of the Quill, and withal a judicial dignitary who flourishes on a river town of Iowa, (maybe our friend the Judge, of the XriM, knows him,) went to Chicago to see the Elephant and hear some other music than the cry of "Copy." It was during the reign of Johannus Elongatus at Chicago.— Our friend, the Editor and Judge, called on Long John and as it is said Long John is one of the "boys," our friend requested the wor thy Mayor to show him a few of the sights," and particularly that portion known as the "Sands." Long JJohn demurred—he was very busy—but if the Judicio-editor would call at the Mayor's Court "the next morning, he (Long John) would allow him to select from the frail sisterhood which would un doubtedly be brought in over night. Ju dicio-editor consented, and left Elongatus took his magisterial seat in the morning. The Mayor's room was crowded —a few pickpockets, a burglar or two, a half score of Cyprians, more or less va grants, police officers, spectators, and Irue to his promise, the Iowa Judge and Editor. Long John greeted him with his usual grin, and quietly motioned him lo take his choice of the Beauties before the Court. Judicio-E.litor said not a word. The work commenced, and proceeded.— Cases were disposed of rapidly. Again I Long John winked and grinned at the Iowa Editor to take his choleelef3fee tt Waa too late. The Iowa Editor was mum—he gave no sign. All were disposed of but the fair, frail ones. With a grin of astonishment that the Editor did not "select," Long John pro ceeded to dispose of the cases left. Casting his eye on his docket, he read: Judge and E.litor—residence —Iowa. Arrested for being drunk and cre ating disturbance in a house of ill fame on street, last night The "cat was out of the bag"—the mys terious slience of the Ivlitor, and his unwil lingness to "select," explained. Long John took the Representative of the Press in Iowa, aside, and after hoping that his night's rest in the Jail had not interfered with his digestion, let him slide a sober and wiser man. CHOIR —Though the weather of last Thursday evening was of the most stormy and disagreeable character—a coLtinued storm of wind and rain—and the streets al most impassable notwithstanding these serious difficulties which are, generally speaking, enough to keep everybody at home, the Concert of the Continental Choir came off at Metropolitan Hall, and was at tended by a Urge and genteel audience.— Not even the strictures of certain inter ested parties on the former concert, had the effect to keep away a single individual —but to the ^contrary, quite, brought out additional number of hearers. There were upwards of three hundred present and had the weather been more favorable, the Ilall'could not have contained the multi tude. The singing was most excellent, and waa received bv the audience with thunders of applause. The change of programme since the first Concert, which introduced a quan tity of comic music in the second part, was a happy stroke, and added greatly to the pleasure of the occasion. Some original productions were brought out, which re flected—slightly—upon the acts of "ye di rector," and were most enthusiastically en* cored. The performance being over, t!:e follow ing communication from the Secretary of the Ladies Union Benevolent Society was handed to the committee: To the Old Folk* Continental CMr The Ladies of the Union Benevolent So ciety, request the benefit of a Concert by the Old Folks Continental Choir, to aid them in their further effort for the poor. TOE PACKETGOMPANV.—Bos.STATE "DKMOCKAT.—I see an article is going the rounds in the river paper?, stating that our ^o|ular and favorite commander, Capt. Geo. H. Myers, ha* eold out his interest in the Paeket Company, and will not e in the trade next season, which report I, in the absence of Capt. Myers, take the liberty of contradicting, as I know he has not sold out one dollar ot his stock in said company, and is now at New Albany, Ind., superintending the building of the fine passenger packet, Black Hack, which is coming into the trade when completed, which will be in the early part of May next, when Capt. Myers will be pleased to accommodate his numerous friends on the river: as all will admit him to be the most gentlemanly commander in the Rock Island trade. The Captain will return next week for the purpose of putting the worthy old Ben in condition to run in the spring, and until his new passenger packet is completed. I see it also stated that the old packet company known as the Davenport, Rock is land and Keokuk Packet Company is meta morphosed into the Rapids Packet Company^ which is also untrue, as I am told by one of the parties interested in both companies that such is not thc case. 1 make this statement to set the matter right before the many persons interested, and hope that the papers which have been so ready to circulate the report in relation to Capt Myers, will make correction as above.
