The afternoon was spent in arguing de murers and taking defaults. The cases of Arndt vs. ITriunnemann and Allerd, Coates Patched vs.^City of Dav enport, and Scott vs. Leonard are set for to day. Judge Miller closed his labors last even ing and Judge Dillon resumes his to-day. THE MT. VKUNON FANCY DRESS BAI.I.—SOME PARTICULARS.—The long talked and long expected occasion has come and passed, and is numbered with things which have been. The lady patronesses of the Mt. Vernon fund—those estimable women who have taken upon themselves the task of raibing a handsome suui to be applied to the pnseliase of Mt Vernon—the home of WASHINGTON—have displayed their patri otism in an unmistakable manner, and we are g!ad to add that their labors have been crowned with abundant success. We do not deciu it proper to stop here to state how and in what particular manner the plans were put into execution we need not state either that every old wardrobe was ransacked for (unique articles of dress or that the Theatres of Chicago were taxed largely for costumes of the stage to set off the forms of the male portion of the party, or that many of our ladies spared neith pains or expense to array themselves in the most gorgeous and costly appareL These things are all too well known to the public to need recitation. We shall speak only of what we saw there and what we thought of the same. At an early hour on Tuesday evening, numerous carriages coutaiding a great amount of crinoliue, drove up to the steps of the Metropolitan Hall and unloaded their precious cargoes others on foot, decked out In all manner of quaint costumes come flocking in from all directions until the Hall was completely filled with one of the largest and most brilliant assemblages ever called together in the city of Davenport. There were representatives from every European country—the French, the Spanish, the Turk English, Italian, German, Austrian and Russian noble dukes, earls, barons, counts. Indians, and any quantity of allegorical and burlesque characters, all mixed up in one heterogeneous mass, and but for the recog nition of the familiar faees of our cit'cens we should nave considered ourselves in dream land, or gazing upon the stage of Burton's Theatre, on the oeeaaion of some grand performance. Passing from the street into the Hall, the first thing whieh attracted the attention was our worthy friend n, who rep resented a very jolly, though stern son of Erin, who invariably had something deei dedlj rich to say to every one who passed hist. Who was the belle—the bright, particular •tar of that vast assemblage of brilliant beauty That is a question upon which all wonld willingly give an opinion and all would be sure to differ upon. We have our opinion and chall express it but if any one wishes to dispute us, tve will leave the adjustment of the question to the lady herself, she was none other than the beautiful and accomplished Miss M. 111KU „,,i wore the most splendid dress That is another hard ques I tion to dee'de. There was Mrs. W h, Miss W r, Mrs. D—t, Mrs. Ii r, the beautiful Miss n, and many others who were dressed in very costly and very elegant dresses. One worn by Mrs. was made expressly for the occa sion at an expense of $20o. Not being conversant with the names of "dry goods" we can only say that it was black, spang led with stars. She represented l^dy Mac beth. We noticed among those present the lovely Mies as the flour girl ^ene. Another pleasing feature and one which attracted great attention was the appear ance of Mr. S as Mrs. Partington. II carried eut the idea to a nicety, and must say that he never before was seen in so ap propriate a costume. We advise him to adopt, it permanently. Mr. E dressed to represent JNortd and Soul!', nnd attracted much attention. The portly old landlord was well -k. Touchstone ia comic -w as a modern courtier, —s as Gen. The comic parts were well sustained, and are glad to state t'.at the party passed off in the most satisfactory and harmonious manner—if harmony could exist in such a company. We heard no complaint, and there was no call for any. The ladies have done them selves great credit in managing the matter, and have, as they deserve, made a fine sum out of it for the purpose before stated. It was the mo9t successful as well as the most brilliant pariy ever given in this city. The amount netted by the ball was, we are informed not far from $300, whieh ?um will make a very handsome present from the worthy ladies our city, to the Mt. Vernon fund. COI NCIL PKOCEI:DIM S. Mr. C. here made a agression to speak of C-'iitral America and oilier weak Slates once it was the policy of the American go vernment to maintain a friendly feeling with all the nations of the Continent. He remembered when the American name wa» loved, when il was dear to struggling Re publics wiieti the declaration of encourage ment had been spoken by the voice of Hen 1 had been read at the head of their armies. How have we lost all tins? read the mes sage aud there you will eee that we are at variance with Mexico, Cota bi^u, Guate mala, and that we are buried in diniM-ltie* faom the Fee Jee Islands to the Sj.itiiisii throne. Do all these specks of war augur well for the revenue? Yet a bill is now pending to place the military and naval force* in the hands of the President, up rt and alnive the action of Congress. He did not want to see our Anglo-Saxon race mingled with people who did n't under stand or appreciate our institutions, and he did not think our countrys greatness was to be achieved by adding acre to iicre. but by tilling it with arts uud industry he believ ed that this whole scheme of policy would burst like a bubble the bill a mere piece of farfaronaiia.
