UNHLKAHANT,—VKUY.—Tlie tw We hear it reported on the street that King Hiram the I. intends con testing the election in the 4th Ward. We think it weuld be very proper that lie shoud, as ot.e of the judges informs us that he had suspicious that they were running in a larger number of votes than was strictly legal but as he was almost totally unacquainted with the voters in that ward, and his fellow judge, who wan a Republican, appeared to know them all, he kept his own counsel and said nothing. If Mr. Morley allowed any illegal voting, he should be held to a strict account. UOHBKRY.—The agent of J. A. Colby A Co. of Chicago, received a dispatch from Chicago requesting him to remit all the monies in his possession to Chicago imme diately. As hia wife was about going to that city he concluded to s« nd the money by her. During the pass age up her trnuk was broken open in the bagguge car and robbed of its contents. Fortunately she bad the money belonging to Colby A Co. about her person aud the thieves were thus disappointed iu their plunder. IIow they should have known that she was in poaees sion of the funds remains a mystery, £W The Oazttle and Newt both refer to the small vote which John Hoist obtained, and seem to think his vote the test of the influence of the DEMOCRAT.— Roth papers regret the defeat of Sears— the (lazrttt evidently the most. Both say the DRMOCRAT "did it," and both hale it therefer and yet both agree that the DEM OCRAT has no ^iiiPuence. Let us jost the books. Rechtel received 9fi votes. Motie do 82 do llaviland do 104 do tear* do 77 do Rears, therefore, rnn behind his ticket 11 votes, llaviland ran ahead 9. making 10 add two for UouestJohn Hoist and l.r Re publican votes, which Sears obtained by the aid of Cook, the Gazette, and the Newt, and we have 37 votes which show where the influence was. So Mr. Cook, Mr. Altw* and Mr. Uazettt, you may consider it a fixed tet, that when the DKMOCRAT undertakes to read a renagade out of the party it is going te be done, "Loomis A Co., to tho eoatrary notwithstanding," STBAMBR nm sv, 1.1. In 1802, the father of Alderman KvaBs, who was a native American—was a citizen of the United State*, and a resident of Machias, in the State of Maine. He con tinued to reside in the Uuited States for a numlwr of years subsequent to 18*2 he afterwards remeved to Nova Scotia, where Henrr B. Evans was born. It will be seen that the Alderman's case is clearly within the act of Congress, he beiug the child of one who was acitizen of the United Slates at the time of the passage of the act, to wit, ISO'2. We are glad that Alderman Evan* is eligible because we believe him to be a sound Iem«crat, an able, fearless man, and one to whom the interests of every cla^s of our people can be safely confided but above all, we rejoice that the etlorts of the party, on Saturday luxt, were not thrown away, that oar young men may not feel that the prize they had fought for was spirited away just as they were about to clutch it. LAST AGROIND. —Aa the Ben Campbell was on her way up from Keokuk Isst Saturday night, and when about one mile below Tort Louisa Prairie, it being very dark and the wind blowing a tremendous gale up stream, which caused the steam to blow forward, blinding the pilot, she ran hard aground. At this point the prairie is a vast sheet of water, which has the appearance of a wide river, and in the indistinct glances which the pilot could obtain, it probably somewhat deceived him. The intense darkness also prevented bin from seeing the timber at the point of the prairie until he had got as close in •bore that ho could not stop or back her.— The heavy swells tended to lift her still farther np on tho bank, and she now li«a la a very bad position. Tho Ben is a hard boat to steer with a stern wind, and as the gale that was blowing, was aa awful one, we are not surprised at hor being just whsrs shs is. Nothing is more certain, than that the entire Democratic City Ticket would have been elected but for the reckless policy pur sued by the State hnnocrat, in repudiating the regular nominees of the party, and in otherwise assaulting hard-working and prominent Democrats not nominees.—Xew*. "Nothing is more certain" than that if democratic delegates and democratic can didates do not make democratic nomina tions and support democratic nominees, thev will not receive democratic support, and shall not be elected to fill democratic offices in this city. We rf jtcted and lrf,at*d Mr. Sears, because he, iu democratic convention! with his vote, with his hirelings, ai.d with his influence attempted to defeat a straight democratic nomination. We shall do it again if any one else so far forgets himself ss to trample upon democratic principles. IUHSDAY kto make their departures, and if they hesitate we shall apply the proper remedy, as in this cue. SATURDAY'S UBSI'LT.—We never like to quarrel with our neighbors up. on past issue?, but cannot permit Ixxmiis A Co. to make such broad statements as we found in yesterday's Neaas. It says that the DEMOCRAT dejeated the ticket. Now the fact is that the coarse of the DEMOCRAT in insisting upon the nomination of a full Democratic ticket, has done more to wards strengthening the Democratic party, than any move that has l»een made for the past three years, and i/*the -\Vtts had sup' ported as, it would have looked better, not-. withstanding it would not have added any very great weight to the movement. The junior editor of that paper, Mr. Johns, may thank this journal for his election, for if we had supported him in the same "wishy washy" style that the A'emt supported the democratic ticket, he would have been so badly beaten that it would not have paid to count the votes. On the streets Mr. Johns repeatedly stated that Mr. Cook was the best man of the two for the office of the Mayor, while in the Xem its chief edi tor, Loomis A Oo., manfully sustained Sear* for supporting Cook in the Democratic con vention—a pretty way indeed to support a democratic ticket. A vast deal of good Influence a democratic journal mnat have when it takes such a position. Imantis A Co. had bettor "dry up." FIT /OAR FIKT'S HTK SSNSI DAILY IOWA STATE DEMOCRAT. Moproase Coitrt. The language used on this occasion was so strong, and his views so highly eolored, that his Congregation, both "saints and sinners" were convulsed with laughter, and even the Paster, (a most estimable man) who was also a listener to bis bitter tirade, could not refrain his merriment.
