Pl BLIC Schools.— All tbe public schools of the city close their session on Friday of next week, for a vaca tion of three months. This is anticipating the date of closing last year by one month, but owing to the present depressed state of finances, the School itoard have deemed it necessary to close thus early. Tbe exami nation will commence in the Intermediate Hc'iool on Monday, the 80th inst. and in District No. U, at Sixth and Gaines, and No. '•i, at Sixth and J'erry, on Tuesday Sub Districts No. 1 at East Davenport, No. 4 at North Davenport and No. 5 at West Da venport, will be examined onWednesday and Thursday, wish attain to call the attention of the college authorities to the state of the side walk on lirady street, at the lower corner of their ground. It is a ahame that a oomrnunity should be obliged to submit to such indignities an are imposed upon them by this Iowa College. They appear to think ikat they can do and say whatever euits them best, whether it pleases their fellow citizens or not. The mud on the side walk at tlie place referred to, was six inches deep yesterday, and there is no way of getting around it. BADLY SUCK-BD IN.—An exceedingly verdant youth hailing from Port Byren, Illi nois, made his appearanee at the County Judge's office a Jay or two since, and ap plied for a license to get married. He was accompanied as far as tbe office door by his intended, a noted courtezan of this city, named Georgiana Harris, who remained out. side in the hall to await further develop ments. The clerk a?ked the youth if he had a witness to prove his quallt cations which was answered negatively. The clerk then informed him that he could not issue a licet.without, some competent witness was produced to swear that he and his in tended possessed the requisite qualifications for the responsible state [of matrimony.— Ihis was a severe shock to tbe 3'oung sub ject for hymenial pleasures, as he was a total stranger in these parts, and did not know a person who would be willing to make the required eath. The Clerk pointed to a somewhat noted lawyer of this city, at the same time intimating that he (the law yer) would undoubtedly swear as to their qualifications for the sum of twenty-five cents, in hand paid. The young man, how ever, had not the money to spare, for that purpose. Just at this time the fair damsel who was about to honor the young citizen of Port Byron by bestowing upon him her hand and heart, made her appearance in the office, having become impatient at the de lay in procuring the necessary papers. The following interesting dialogue then en sued 'ere man won't give it to me without a witness. won't eh well, yotiv'e got no show here without you show your 'mun.' If you want your license why the 1 don't you pay for it I" Verdant youth then made a moving ap peal to the clerk to know what he should do in such a case. The inexorable official, who evidently had a heart of steel, replied that he would not give a license until a witness was produced. This rather nettled Georgiana, who said, Come Cap, we can't spend any more time here, I must get married. I haven't felt so much like getting married in a long time.-— You are are a fool for not coming down with tbe dust" Lets get a license some where, sell out here and go live on a farm." The twain then left the oflice, the lady a little in advance, followed by the verdant but devoted swain. We are told the happy conple went to the neighboring city "of Itock Island, and being successful iu their efforts to obtain a license, were joined ia holy bonds of wedlock. About five o'clock, the same evening, a lady and gentleman, the lady with a wen derful developement of crinoline, and a load of bliss, which tbe vulgar call whiskey, might be seen wending their serpentine way towards- the Hotel-de Harris, situated on Front street. At a still later hour, the lady was discovered on board the Dubuque paek et, very drunk, declaring her intention of making her hasbsnd know ber worth by a short absence. The nearly frantic Benedick was obliged to flee to his wife's sister, who undoubtedly soothed his humbled spirit as we noticed him at a concert that evening,ac companied by the charming Flying Jenny, the sister aforesaid. If thatyonng man baa parents or friends in Port Byron, or this eity, they would do well to havo an eye on him, as ha is legally married to tbe miserable woman above mentioned, and sba aaa alaias of hias pro- NOBTHEBMB. The local column ef any paper is the one most sought for, and should re ceive the greatest attention of ita editors. NARROW ESCAPE.—Yesterday A. M. as a couple of men were coming down Brady street in a lumber wagon, and when oppposite Gen. Sargent's residence, a bolt of lightning struck the earth so cloee to them as to throw the sand and stone into their faces. Had they been six foot nearer the west side of Brady, they would cer tainly have been killed as it was, they were nearly dead with fright and the shock. ^e i £-tT Our two city cotemporaries bear down rather hard upon Mr. B.ssell, the St. Louis engineer, charging him with bribery and corruption. That Mr. Bissell would do a great many very naughty things to serve his masters in St. Louis, we have *iot a doubt. But that he would endeavor .o bribe a pilot to run a boat upon the bridge, thereby endangering both life and property, we are not prepared at present to believe. The bridge fight is becoming al together too personal, and will, we fear, end in something serious. Our neighbors might as well advise the proprietor of a band organ to change his tunes from the certain fixed set his instru ment 19 bound to play by force of its own interna' or internal mechanism The Dev. ocrat'x calliope is ou the same principle. It is an organ with steam power, and can play only certain tunes, twelve in all, we believe. It does not require an operator, like tl.e cir cus calliope which astonished us lastyear. So we trust our neighbor will not persist in demanding uw tune* from the Denmark's calliope. What the Oaxettt is driving at, is more than we can conjecture. There ie evidently a want of srnu in the above item. KEITKNED.—Mr. Smiley, of the firm of Smiley & McKay, arrived here on Weduesday evening, from 120 miles west of1 Nebraska City. He started from Daven port on the 25th of March, iatending to go through to the Peak, but very wisely turned his face homeward, after having sufficient proof that the expedition would prove fruit less. Mr. Smiley confirms the worst reports we have heard concerning the humbug. He heard discouraging reports from return ing trains for some distance before he turned back, but was determined to push on fur ther, and be satisfied before giving up the ship. He mentions several incidents con cerning the emigrants he met on the route, etc., but gives no particular news farther than what the papers have had already. Mr. Smiley saw Scudder, the murderer of postmaster Basset, and had a conversation with him, in which he said that he was an eye witness to the murder, but did not par ticipate in it. During the conversation, he was so nervous and betrayed such uneasi ness to be off, as to excite suspicion in the minds of Mr. Smiley's party. Scudder as sumed another name when he met the party. Two days after this meeting, Mr Smiley paased a party in search of the murderer, and offering $600,00 reward for bis recovery. At I'lattsmouth, the ferry boat was taken poasession of by the Pike'e Peakers, and kept for four or five days. Mr, Humphrey, of Davenport, bought Mr. Smiley's team, and intends pushing through to California. There are one hundred returning to one team going out now, aad the homeward bound look very much like a picture that m*y be seen in one of our bookstores, enti tled Stocks down." In about four or fire weeks, we may expect to see the majority that left here, in our streets again. (Pjr tb- The .Thursday, May Ml Democrat Cottaty Mlarai Johnton IOWA CITY, May 26,1859. MANps. EDITORS:—We are in reeeipt at farther important particulars in regard to the recent deplorable calamity in this im Imediate neighborhood. As several errors, however, managed to creep into yesterday's report, I would take oc^oeion to state that the brick house which was demolished, some seven miles from thia city, was the property of Mr. James Gra baii, of which the inmates, seven or eight in number, six of them children, providen. tially escaped. This is near and to the southward of the Graham's, familiarly Beyocd Graham's, the last house injured was occupied by a Mr. Waltz, and owned *y 1 Daniels. The persona of this bousehdw, four in number, were all s« injured, among them, a babe not two old, which was carried some 300 yards and found in a slough, leg broken, maay flesh wounds and a terrible lacera tioi of the scalp. These four are still living, ,u*Vand.nv .. anc under care of Dr. White, formerly of inted and paid Davenport. Tae destruction at Berry's was the most seva-e the tornado evidently having here gaiced its widest diameter, and stripping fences for a quarter of a mile iu extent. The barn was a very large and substantial one, and ccst 1200. The corn crib, near stoty and a half in height, and probably Cba» narUn,' cost five to six hundred dollars Two hones, a colt, four cows, several hogs and maty chickens, were crushed outright or so iajured as to live but a few hours. The man who was killed at Berry's was naned McCoy, and not Patten, as stated behre. Patten and family were occupanta of tbe bouse, but escsped with fractures and briises. far as heard from, the loee of life la five number wounded, ten eotneof whom wi.l most likely be numbered with tbe otLer ill-fated victims. lhe funeral services of Mr. Berry have noi yet taken place, but are delayed for th« arrival of distant friends.
