He has aecured the bar on this bout, which will be up hern next week, on which occasion Charley pro' pones to "treat the crowd" of his friends, if they call ou him. PARTY.—A Son A i. social party conn-a off at Le Claire on Friday (to-mor row) evening under the favorable superin tendence of Milo White, which will no doubt be an agreeable affair. The .youth anil beau ty of Davenport are invited and we promise them they will be well cared for. ST. Lot-IS BRANCH.—Mr. Kepner, of the firm of Graham fc Kepner, left for St. Louis last evening, where he intends re maining for a while, to act in connection with the firm here, in the grain trade, in which they traffic largely. Their freight bi'ls are quite an item to the ateamboeia ra which tbey ship. ITEMS.—la going iuto the country on Monday morning, we counted, between this city and the junction of the Allen's (irove and Hickory Grove nwdu—some seven miles out—no less than twenty-thrte loaded wagons, coming into the city. There are many fields that have not yielded ten bushels to the acre, and aome in which the yield had been only seven bushels to the acre. The average yield they estimate at twelve bushels to the acre. The fenlt s that the grain has not the proper ehaaee to dry, aud becomes musty. IN Jant FREIGHT.—The A Chicau go A Rock Island Railroad raised the freight on flour yesterday morning, to the tune of ten dollars per load in advance o' former charges. We understand that onr heaviest shippers—David A. and J. M. D, Barrows, who usually ahip about aix or aeven car loads per day—have refused to y thia additional tariff, choosing rather to store their flour here. The Mitnerchoir then tuug one ode of welcome, after which tue Turners dispersed around the grounds for recreation, until afternoon. In the afternoon the societies were called together, when a beautiful song was execu ted by the Glee Club of the Davenport So ciety. Mr. GI KLICH then delivered a speech o."excellent merit, followed by an appropri ate address from Jos T. LANK, Esq., which was received with much favor. Mr. LANE advocated the introduction of Gymnastic exercises into our schools, which suggestion we most heartily approve. After the speeches were over, tbe juven iles exercised in vaulting and tumbling, in which performances they did themselves tnnch credit. After the youngstera were dismissed, the Manerchoir sung some beau Utnl songs, and then the party went in for enjoying themselves by dancing and other amusements best suited to their tastes. In the evening, a grand ball came off at i^ihrinau'a Hall, which was largely at tended and highly enjoyed by all who par ticipated. The Seventh Anniversary of our society has been a decided succese, and we hope that all subsequent affairs of the kind may be as pleasant and agreeable, not only to our German friends, but to the American brethren. The editors of the Gazette have cause to rejoice when they see with what eagerness the Republican press picks up and retails their own deliberate falsehoods.— Like to a certain gentleman whose reputa tion for truth is not of the first quality, they chuckle when an opportunity arises to start out a lie varnished sufficiently with the sem blance of truth to decieve those who do not know their true characters. Yesterday, they not only reiterate the assertion that the Democratic party sneeringly call their ticket the l'lougli-IIandle Ticket,', but in support of such an unqualified canard, quote from papers published in other States vari ations of the same fiddling. They are like the man who. after making an incredible statement, was willing to swear to the story becauae he was bound to stick to Jiie word, right or wrong, llow fallen is the tone of the dazettr from its ancient dignity since the junior editor, the genius of the family, came to enlighten ita readers! Instead of the placidity of the old school governing its leaders, as in old times, it demeans itself by originating outrageous charges against the worthy men who are running on the Demo cratic ticket, and hatching venemous arti ctes to pander to the passionate feelings of its eupporters. It in effect reasons thus— we will make the farmers believe that the Democratic party is antagonistic to hard fisted labor, and we can do this by starting the assertion that the Democratic papers publish their contempt for Republicanism by dubbing our ticket the Plow-Handle Ticket," If the (Jasette had not been chal lenged to produce the proof that the Demo cratic press has thus spoken deridingly of the men running on the Republican ticket, the matter might be let pass but having been asked to bring forward the documents, and no proof being forthcoming, they de serve the brand of falsifiers and panderers to bad feelings to be charged upon them. It is not probable that Democrats would despise the business which seven-tenths of them in the State of Iowa follow, and which bears with it an bonorable standing in so ciety nor do they battle for Democratic principles with tbe weapons of abuse and appeals to passion. It would be well for the Gazette and its reputation to take out the beam which causes their moral obliqui ty, much better than to put up a out of the big plough with the beam running into the ground. EDITORS DEMOCRAT. The Iowa State Teacher's Association is a grand tri umph this year. There are now present from different parts of the State, over one hundred educators, end it is thought that the number will reach three or four hun dred before the close of tbe session. The President, Prof. Humphrey of Cedar Rapids, gave his address, last evening, be fore the Association. It waa a very prae tical discussion of the following topics, which were reeommended to the Aseoela tion: First. That a law be passed by the State Legislature and State Board, requiring the Oonnty Superintendents of ea-h oounty to hold a Teacher's Institute in their respec tive eoontlee, whleh should continue at least two weeks. This would make It ae. cessary for this favored offiser to know something. Secondly. That a Normal Sohool be estab lished ia some central part of the State, by a law of the State Board. Thirdly. Thai a tea be levied for the par pose of raising a fond far the purchase of Distviat School Libraries. Fourthly. That eaeh Dkftrlat Board be required to furnish snlelBMt apparatus to their NMeatlve schools to UlBlwto all ths braaohsa taaght, vhlah ft«*•* Ulttstra tion, and fifthly. On motion of Dr. J. Maynard, a eommit mittee consisting of one delegate from each oounty represented, was appointed to re port permanent officers for the Association. There is a disposition manifested to give the right stamp and character to the Asso ciation, and make it a permanent means of good to the teachers of the State. Mr. Mills, publisher of the Iowa School Journal, recently established at Des Moines, is here, and will endeavor to get the Asso ciation to make said Journal their organ. Rev. Howe, editor and publisher of the little Literary AJuerliier, is also on hand, and I judge he is making his inate modesty a sort of ladder to climb into the favor of the members. Meeknet* is a good thing to have in the country. The exercises of tbe evening were con cluded by a Recitation by A. A. Griffith of Davenport Much inquiry is made for the Superinten dent of Schools of Scott county, and his efficient coipsof teachers, Mr. Weller—Mr. Man waring nnd Mr, Griffith being the only representatives of Scott. Such aspirants as Mr.Kissell do not regard their own interests rightly, when they kesp themselves aloof from State gatherings of this kind. No doubt his eagerness to qualify himself for the classes that he will be obliged to hear in the Intermediate School, keeps him rather busy just at thia time. I enclose an order of exercises.
