CONFESSION— DISOISTED.—The Sage of Petersboro is beginning to find out that his political cronies are not exact ly tbe men he took them to be. lie has, moreover, aired his new opinions in a circular reply to a letter from the Chairman of the Jerry Rescue Com mittee, inviting Gerrit Smith to preside over the celebration of the anniversary of the deliverance of the imjiortal Jer ry. In this morceau, which we pub lish elsewhere, Mr. Smith says that he has quite enough of the Jerry Rescu ers his interest has declined greatly within the last two or three years, and be ia decidedly of the opinion that it is unwise to continue to repeat the farce any longer." The rescue, lie says, was a ''glorious thing but as most of tbe bretbern who helped it along have fal len back from tbe faitb, it is absurd to keep up tbe shadow of a celebration when the substance has evaporated through party and church influences. The Jerry Rescuers, he says, are ''base ly inconsistent," and o are the Tem perance Societies." It is the that waa worn by Napo leon 1 in the hilt of his sword it weighs one hundred and thirty-sixand three-fourths carata and ia the same in depth and diame ter as the Tuscan. Another diamond, the Etoile du Sud,' was found six years ago in Brazil, and pur* chased by a Parisian firm, who have just finished cutting it. The weight is one hundred and twenty-five and a half carats, and it is aaid to be of the purest water and free from blemish. The Koh 1-r.oor" now weighs one hundred and three carats, its original weight having been reduced by an error in cutting in 1852. The great dia mond belonging to the King of Portugal is still in a rough state, and is asserted to weigh sixteen hundred and eighty carata, and to be worth $30,000,000. It is larger than an egg, but many eminent judges be lieve it to be a white topas, and without any specific value. The Blue diamond," belonging to Mr. Hope, the banker, of Am sterdam, weighs seventy^eeven carats.— The Pacha of Egypt owns a diamond weighing forty-nine carats. The Piggott diamond weighs forty-seven carata. It was brought from India by Earl Piggott, who disposed of it by raffle, valuing it at #160, 000. It was drawn by a lady who sold it to the Paeha of Egypt—A most sensible woman in our opinion, and doubtless a jewel to her husband." The "Sancy" dia mond weighs thirty-nine carata—the "Polar Star" thirty two both are among the crown jewels of France. But impelled by the power of that very genius, which wished to anticipate both men and things, and by tbe imperious force of circumstances, which aroused simultaneously against him the bense of security on the part of the rest of Europe, Napoleou was compelled to combat all the nation* within r. short period of time. The terrific nature of the struggle exhaust- u Napoleon III. came with bis sagac ious intellect to establish the views of his uncle, and to-day not one of the Napoleonic ideas is forgotten in tbe schemes that agitate Europe. Avoid ing the danger that ruined the first, the third Napoleon makes haste slowly." In constructing the edifice of his dynasty he does not lay one course till the preceeding one has be come cemented. His wars, instead of awakening bitter enmcties, seem to make his friendships more firm. That with Russia secured for him the recog nition and apparent alliance of the giant of tbe East. That with Austria has effected a remarkable change in the policy of the Germar.ic Confedera tion towards him. Nor is the change within the domain of France less stri king. Railroads are being everywhere built, public wcrks constructed, indus try and commerce stimulated, tbe ma terial interests of the people fostered, the laws imbued with a wise and con servative liberalism, to such a degree that the second series of Napoleonic wara, instead of exhausting France, have served only to show the vast extent of her resources and her power. Iter armies and her fleets are now the first in Europe. It is these things that have made Louis Napoleon the arbiter of that continent. In itussia a parallel case exists.— Nicholas I. initiated a policy as vast and as comprehensive as that of the first Napoleon—social reform at home, the extension of tbe boundaries of his empire to the waters of the mediter ranean and the farthest confines of Asia, and tbe creation ot fleets and armies that should give weight to his power in Europe. Like the first Na poleon, be, too, was before his time.— Europe, palled with forty years of peace, was ready to go to war against him, and that of the Crimea crushed his mighty soul. Alexander II. saw the errors of bis father. He made peace with Western Europe, be urged the construction of railroads, canals and river steamers at home, he libera ted the serfs, he hastened tbe founding of a new empire on the Asiatic shore of the Pacific, he is building telegraphs and railroads across northern Asia, and by every possible means is seek ing to foster the developcment of the material interests of bis empire and the elevation of his people. Tbe re* suit is alieady being witnessed. Rus sia stands on a par with imperial France, and together they give tbe law to Europe. These two imperialisms are pursu ing the true conflict against the class theories of feudalism. Everywhere they are undermining the power of the nobles and e!evating tbe people and they are performing another great good work. Through them Europe and the world is being freed from the progress of a destructive red republic canism, which threatened society with ruin, and the nation with tbe rule of the worst of tyrannies, that of a system over the individual. On our side we are pursuing the same war, but in a constructive Bense. We have no aris tocracy to be removed, but we are building op the power ef tba people through the same measures which are being pursued in France and Russia— the dcvelopement of the industrial and commercial interest. Each of these gigantic Powers is placed in a sphere to which it seems peculiarly adapted we to lead in tbe New World, France to lead in Europe, and Russia to civi lize and rnle in Asia. These are the three great Powers of the world, and their influence is already manifest aod is fast being admitted by all the others. VICK PRESIDENT BRECKINRIDGE.— We have no doubt that Mr. Breckin ridge is sincere in bis disclaimer of a Presidential candidacy. He is bat 39 years of age, and the expiration of a teim, or even of two terms in the presidential office would place him in retirement in the meredian of his life. It would be better that career should not thus quickly culminate, if it were so soon to close and if Mr. Brackiaridge wishes to plan oat a wise and well ordered life, he will do well to shaa the prematura hoaors of the Presideacy. Still be ia aot beyond the reach of tha Democracy of the nation, who, if tbaj want him, will hava him, not for hia sake bat because of thalr own ne cessities.
