Russians lose battle ship. Japan's damage not known. [Special Dispatch to Daily Alaskan.] Tokio, March 24. ? A dispatch received from Wuji says the Japanese fleet made an other attack on Port Arthur March 18. They bombarded all day, early and late, the de fenses to the port. The Japanese ships also fought a furious engagement with the Russian fleet outside the harbor, destroying one Russian battleship. Stfven Japanese casualties were reported, but there is no information at hand concerning the Japanese fleet's condition. The navy department is not advised any further as to this engagement but it evidently eipects to hear pleasant news. RUSSIA SUSTAINS SEVERE OEffATON LAND Land forces of two countries come together on banks of Yalu riyer near Wiju and Japs get a victory. [Special Dispatch to the Daily Alaskan.] Vancouver, March 24 ? News has been received here today that the Russians are reported to have lost 600 men killed, wounded and prisoners in a sharp encounter with the Jajwinese troops at Chyong Sysng on the Yalu river, near Wiju. A missionary in j Southwest Africa has written a letter defending the Hereros against the, charges of massacreing women and children and ^discriminating butchery.
