A masked man entered the rooms of the Belmont Social Club last night and at the point of a gun lined up against the wall six men. He took their diamond rings valued at #1)00 and grabbed #400 from the table then backtd out. He was pursued and shot. The dead man was found to be Thorndike one of the most prominent and best known men in the city. His mother is a wealthy widow at Stockton. It is currently reported here that last night the Japanese squadron bombarded New Chwang, pouring shells into the place from six, miles in a per fect shower. The report is unverified and difficult of substantiation at this wiring but it is declared that the bombardment was most effective. Had the Japanese so desired they could have followed it up by taking the place. The firing was answered from the large guns recently placed in position by the Russians, but one by one, as the shells were seen to explode in the earthworks, the guns became silent.
