Aft. 612 First Avenue, Seattle ii?? an [Original.] The dinner ended shortly after 11 O'clock and cigars were passed. One of -the guests held his cigar between LU Angers without lighting it. "Why don't you imoke, Joslln?" ask ad the host. "1 will when the clock strikes 12." "Why at lir "1 will explain. If you will permit me, by telling a story: Several years ago 1 fell lu love with and wooed a young lady whose father was a crank. He had a number of fads which he lutlictcd mercilessly on others and a number of antipathies which he would Dot permit others to inflict upon him. Ills chief dislike was tobacco in any form. , . "Now, from my you#) up I have been a great smoker. At ten years of age I bought miniature cigars or clga ritos and smoked them, not because I thought it a tine thing to do, but be cause 1 enjoyed them. "Well, my devotion to the young lady I have referred to met with a favor able response, ami I was accepted. She gave me to understand, however, that she had no fortime except what her father might give her or leave her in his will, and It would be Impossible for her to marry me without his consent. There would be no difficulty In ob taining It, and be had praised when she married to settle a third of his property upon her. All we had to do was to burner him until after the settle ment. which would occur simultaneous ly with the marriage. "I passed six months of torture. 1 listened to the old man's stale Jokes, rode out with liim In summer under furs and in winter with not even a lap robe. I enjoyed music which he de tested, so I heard none. I liked to go to the theater, but as he condemned theaters anil actors I did not dare show my face In a playhouse. Hut the crown of deprivations was the giving up of smoking. My tiancee informed me on the flrst day of our engagement that to smoke In her father's presence would lie like shaking a ml rag before a mad bull. To show her how much I loved her 1 agreed not to smoke till after the wedding. This she commended highly, and I took the tirst opportunity to In form her father that 1 did not smoke. "The time spent without my beloved cigars was maddening. Nevertheless 1 refrained, and when my wedding day came 1 was as free from nicotine as a baby. When 1 awoke on that mo mentous day I admit my chief Joy was not that I was going to lie married, though 1 loved uiy flaneee desperately, but that as soon as the settlements were made, the marriage ceremony over and we were driving to the sta tion I would light a cigar. To this my bride to be bad assented. "We were to be married at 12 noon in presence only of the family. The eccen tric father had a horror of large wed dings and would consent only to a pri vate one. T weut to my room at 10 o'clock to dress. My toilet was com pleted In half an hour, and I had noth lug to do till 11:30. I had bought n Ik>x of the best cigars I could find, and they were on my inautel. I took out a nuui ber to put In my satchel and momenta rily held them under my nose. "Gentlemen, the fragrajn-e of tbosi dil.-irs irro<i<f iM" i'<-i?iyitr?. clous, Intoxicating. "WHy notr i gam. 'I have an hour bore alone. At tbe end of tbat bour tbe settlements will be made. What risk la tbere In my smoking bore alone?' I bit off tbe eu<l of tbe cigar, scratched a match and lighted It. Then 1 threw myself lnt>> the arms of an easy chair and the arms of delight at tbe same time. "I finished tbe cigar at 11:20 and hur ried away, reaching the house In twen ty minutes. My father-in-law to be called me into big study to explain some points to be attended to in the settlements. " 'The amount.' bo said, 'that 1 give my daughter is four hundred thou sand'? He stopped short and sniffed tbe air. 'Who's beeu smoking In this room?' "I was terror stricken, but, control ling myself, I looked sympathetic. He went about poking his nose here and there till, coming very near me, be took up my arm aud smelted of my sleeve. "'What's this?' he exclaimed. '1 thought you told me you didn't smoke.' "I tried to stammer an explanation, but broke down. '"Give my daughter to a man who lias the vilest bablt known to man? uot good enough for beasts, not one ol' whom smokes! Not I.' "I argued that tbe preparations bad gone too far to retreat " 'It Is never too late to retreat from a bad bargain. The marriage shal. not take place, or. If It does, my daugh ter shall go to you penniless.' "As soon at} my fiancee and her moth er received the startling news they be gan a des|M>rate effort with the iraie man to induce him to give way. For their sakos be finally agreed to do S" on my promise never again to torn.; tobacco In any form. This was finally amended to extend only one year after his death." "He died a year ago today?" "One year ago tomorrow. He was walking In a new building he wn erecting and fell through an elevator shaft." "Wore you in tbe building at the time?" asked the host with mock grav ity. "Tour question Is not only in very tad taste, but unkind. However, I air. happy at being able to allay your sus picions by assuring you that I wan miles away.
