All the battleships and cruisers have been sunk and the crews were taken ashore this morning. Only the torpedo boat destroyers and transports remain afloat, g The Japanese are now using the destroyers and trans ports as targets and their fire is searching them out. Tokyo, Lec. 9 ? It was stated last night that official re ports from Port Arthur say the Japanese land batteries had almost completely destroyed the Russian fleet at that place. The Savastopol has probably escaped the fate of the other ships. AT WORK Alaska Clnb Plugging for a Delegate (Special Dispatch to Daily Alaskan.) Seattle, Dec. 9? The Alaska Club is sending out a memorial to each mem ber of the United States senate and house of representatives, urging a delegate in congress for A laska. The club will work earnestly to secure this piece of legislation from the short sess ion of congress. WANT CHANNEL IN DRY STRAIT Business men of Alaska will submit a plan to the United States government for the dredging of Dry strait, near Wrangol Narrows. It is claimed bv Alaska residents that the route will shorteu the distance between Seattle and Juneau more than fifteen miles and save the great expense of wideniDg and deepening the narrows. The government has been consider ing improving Wrangel Narnows tor the past two years. Major Mills has made the necessary surveys and the plans have been forwarded to Wash ington. It will require at least $2,0C0, 000 to remove obstructions from the channel and dredge out sand and mud banks. It is estimated by those promoting the plan that Urv strait could k be dredged aDd secured from danger of refilling for $500, CO J. WIHTlf PASS DANCE IN ORDER The regular club dance of the W. P. A. The Japanese government has notified that of the United States that their country will participate in The Hague conference provided it shall be agreed to avoid the present war in its deliberations. Twelve dead bodies of miners killed in the explosion in the Burnett coal mine have been recovered. It has been definitely determined that lii were killed. The others have [all been accouhted for. PROSPECTORS' ARE NOT EXCITED Ole Martineus Holsen is the name of the man who claims to have msde a strike on the west bank of the Skagway river from wh'ch he claims to have se cured an ounce of gold from four pounds of rock. He says tlis locaiion half way between the first and second bridges on the west side of the river, and that free gold is visible to the naked eye for 100 feet up and down the face of the bluff. The proposition is being investigated by old prospectors. They are not yet excited over it, and are skeptical. Senator Diet rich, of Nebraska, has a measure which he proposes for the government of Alaska. His bill provides for the government of the district by a com mission of six persons in addition to the governor. The plan is for the presi dent to appoint three of tuem and to have three elected by the people. This would give the people a minority re presentation on the commission. The bill takes away from the federal courts all the duties except those which are judicial in their nature. Senator Dietrich visited Alaska last summer and he claims his observations suggested the idea of a governing com mission. HOVT MAY NOT GET JOB [Special Dispatch to Daily Alaskan.] Washington, Dec. ? Senators Per kins and Bard, of California, are up in arms against the appointment of Henry H. Hoyt, of California, to be United States district attorney at Nome, to succeed Col. Melvin Gripsby. (J- -Subpoenas have been issued to Senator Mitchell and Representative Hermann to testify in the Oregon land fraud cases that are still to be tried. MRS. Mrs. Chadwick, who is charged with aiding in wrecking the Citizens' National bank, of Ober lin, was placed in the tombs last night. She is feigning sickness. It is alleged that Mrs. Chadwick's borrowings will amount to millions. Left Oood Eitate Archie Burns, the ex- Dye a packer, who died recently at Fairbanks, left a valuable estate. He had secured some good mining property. Judge Irwin was named as administrator temporar ily and his bond fixed at $10,000. Wil liam H. Burns, a brother of the de ceased, is now on hia way to Fairbanks to take charge of the estate. The senate re fused yesterday afternoon to consider the pure food bill. The measure is not likely to pass. At least the indications at this time are that it will not do so. The house was in the committee of of the whole yesterday considering the legislative, executive and judicial appropriation bill. BLASLfV WILL STAND TRIAL [Special Dispatch to Daily Alaskan.] Seattle, Dec. 9? James Beasley sailed for the north last night on the Jeffer son to stand trial at Juneau for forgery.
