The United States has demanded an immediate an swer to the arbitration proposals that TRAIL SOFT Travel Not Gooil on Valdez Route The Valdez trail is getting so.'t. That is the information conveyed by a tele- 1 gram received in Skagway today from Ed. Chadwick, who has at last reached Fairbanks. Mr. Chadwick also com plains that the roadhouse accommoda tions on the Valdez trail are poor. The dispatch was received by W. P. Renwick and it read as follows: "Lots of travel. Trail soft. Road house accommodations poor." Ed. Chadwick left Valdez with Lee j Billings for Fairbanks February 28. He probably reached that place today, as he promised to wire at once upon his f arrival there. In that case he has been three weeks on the trail. Notioe to Fir e Department Tomorrow morning between the hours of 10 and 11, there will be a prac tical demonstration of the code of fire signals that have been prepared. A fire alarm will be sent in from each of the six districts and the fire bell and the fire whistle will respond to each of the alarms, giving both the general alarm in each case to be followed by the sig nal indicating the fire district from which the alarm came. A great whale collided with the battleship Nebraska which is at anchor at Moran's slip near where the great ship is being com pleted. The workmen engaged on the ship were drenched with the spray thrown by the leviathan as he lashed the water. GEFS TIIERE Mrs. Stanford's Remain Reaches Sin Francisco [Special Dispatch to Daily Alaskan.] San Francisco, March 21 ? The steam ship Alameda arrived this morning from Honolulu with the remains of Mrs. Leland Stanford. The body will be taken to Palo Alto immediately. The funeral will take place Friday.
