WeiUman. of H sines, a Uading Jewish citizen of Alaska, In a letter to TOfils 0*p?r. oonwoila that it is the duty of the American press to use its tre mendous tnfluMce to Moure represen tation for the Jews in the popular le? lalative assembly Russia is about to es tablish. He points out that the news papers of this country bare done much to ameliorate the conditions of his race In the domain of the czar and to them does he give credit for the prevent ion of the repetition of the KishinefT mas sacre. This has been possible, he truly says, because the Cuited States ts everywhere regarded as the if rest ex ponent of popular government and of Utopian ideas of right and wrong, and tor that reason most governments de sire the approval of American public opinion. Io discussing the new situat on, j which calls (or the intervention of the American pre*s, Mr. Weltzman sayi: "The czar is about to promulgate a decree convening a national assembly and we have good reason to believe that the loyal Jewish sujecta of the crown, thousand of whom have sh>_d blood oo the battlefield in the far east la defease of their aatloaal flag and country, will be disc.imioated against. "You will readily agree with me that from the standpoint of equality and de mocracy such an action is manifestly uafair. It la unjust to treat as out casta millions of law-abidiug and faith ful citizens whose only crime ia that they are Jewa. The czar and his ad visers hold la high regard the good opinion of the American people and the American press. Thia baa recently been confirmed by M. Witte, the apeclal peace envoy of 'he czar." Mr. Weit/.man la right. The L'oited 8tatea must not permit lUelf to become ao entangled In lta relation* with mon archical governments tha' it cannot use every opportunity to drive home the fact that it dlaapproves of oppres aion no matter by whom practiced or countenanced. It ia the duty of the American press to make it plaia that so long aa Ruaaia diacrlminates against one of the greatest and strongest, in mentality and physical vigor, and one of the moat useful of the Aryan races because of its religion that long will the good opinion of our people be with held from the czar and his government. No people are free until their gcvern ment permits freedom in matters of re gion. Religloua blggotry and political alavery go hand in hand. A constitu tional government that does oot grant freedom la both politics and religion is but a mockery. The Juneau papers say there is ? movement on foot to make B. M. Beh reocis president of the Alaska Fair that it la proposed to bold at Seattle in 1907. If anything would make a success of the fair it would be the fruition of such a movement. B. M. Behrends' name would be to the Alaska fair wh*t that of David R. Francis' was to the St. Louis fair. It would be an absolute guaran tee of reliability, square dealing and straight goods, and it would mean capa ble business management. ALASKA SKIPS COLLIDE AT SEATTLE The steamer Spokane bumped into the steamer Humboldt last evening while making a landing at the Ocean dock, says the Seattle Times. The Spokane had arrived from a voyage to Alaaka and was going to Pier B. Her bow struck the stem of the Humboldt with a crash.
