In the gold room still greater excitement prevailed and the frequent fluctuation* kept tin; dial constantly in motion. In all directions brokers were running to and fro, and altogether the scenes and incidents carried one back to the exciting times of 1869. The cause as signed for a’l this bnovancy and activity to-day is the prospective purchase of some West India island', and an in* reuse in the volume of the cur rency, but there is no doubt the ruin of some of the prominent clique leaders to the street is the real explanation of the great fluctuations of to-day. Indications point to a sharp revival of speculation in Wall street generally, and point at movements in the future. The increased activity in the differ ent departments of speculation to-day caused more demand for money this afternoon and for a time call loans were sharp at 7 per cent, with some ex ceptional transaction* at coin interest. Towards the close of hank hour*, however, the market was easier again, and the demand was supplied more freely at 7 per cent. Prime business notes are current at 9<jl'- per cent. The rise in gold this afternoon had a de pressing effect mi foreign exchange, and the market v*. a' dull although nominally linn. Cotton bills are arriving more freely from the south, and considerable exchange is making against the shipments of bond* to Europe. The nominal rah** at the close were 8/» for long, and tty, fin short Might bill*. Gold active and closing 122 s„*j 12-2 \. The carry ing rates were 7 per eent. gold, and 1-32.
