Smith. in tlif I>aily Journal of ,Jun. loth, pui>* li>lii'il ;it Little Rock, Ark., we find the I'ol In wilier pleasant and unprejudiced notice ol lien. Charles II. Smith, formerly of Eastport in this State. "We learn this morning that Gen. C. II. Smith, who for the past three years has been stationed among us, is ordered to Xew Orleans, to assume command of the Department of Louisiana, made va cant by the decease of Gen. Mower. I hough we feel gratified at the promotion nl a worthy officer, it is with feelings of sincere regret that we bid him adieu. IV e congratulate the people of the Cres cent City, on the accession to not only their number, but their social circle, of so competent an officer and affable a gentle man. Long enough to respect him, we ma\ say love him, have we known him. Just in decisions, and courteous to all, has he ever been, anil we still have the consolation of knowing that while in per son lit may claim a residence in another .State, he still remains our military com mander. To the General and his accomplished wire, we have hut to sat' that they bear with them our heartiest well wishes, and we bespeak for them a stay in the Crescent City that in “other days” will be looked on as one of the bright spots in life's weary “desert.” in the Daily Gazette of same date and place, tlie following appears. Considering the source from which it emanates, a rebel organ of the most rabieal stripe, a higher compliment, in the estimation of royal people, could not he paid than is contained in the following: “General Smith has been in command here tor nearly three years. As an officer we regard him to be considerate, cool and forbearing. We are constrained to qualify the terms of this reference because we be lieve that Gen. Smith, as the IT. S. com manderof this depaatment, permitted his partisan bias to influence him in lending his aid to defeat the will of the people of this State in their vote upon the ratification of the present constitution of Arkansas. Otherwise we believe Gen. Smith has con ducted himself in the position he occupied as military commander here with much fairness and unusual consideration for the rights and feelings of a community in which he commanded as a representative of theirflushed ami giddy conquerors." PEARLS. Pearls are the third product of the ocean for which regular fisheries have been es tablished the most important being those in the bay of Bengal, C’eylon, and other parts of the Indian Ocean. There the pearl oyster is procured by divers, who sink to the bottom, with the aid of large stones, and remain there about thirty seconds gathering all the shells within reach. The work is exceedingly severe, and the men are frequently devoured bv sharks. The search for pearls always encfs at noon, when the gun is fired, and all the boats return to the shore, in order that the boat may be examined and cared for by daylight. The shell fish are piled together, and the heap is left for about ten days, by which time the remains becomes entirely decomposed. The shells are then easily opened, the round pearls, which are found in the body of the oyster, which furnish nacre, or mother-of-peal, are cleansed and sold by the cake. The pearls are sifted to separate the dif ferent sizes; the smaller ones are sold bv the weight and the others singly, accortf ing to their value. The nacre and the pearl are formed of essentially the same material, but nacre is deposited over tlie whole shell in layers, while the pearl is the result of an efi'ort on the part of tiie oyster to free itself from the irrita tion of some foreign substance which has penetrated within its valves. As the ani mal is ineable of ejecting any intruder, such as an unwelcome grain of sand, it renders it less obnoxious by depositing around it thesmooth and lustrous substance which is so eagerly sought by man. The Chinese are so well acquainted with the fact, that they force the oyster to form pearls, by thrusting small figures of tin be tween the valves, and then returning the ereature to the water, whence it is fished up in the course of a few years, and the pearl is extracted retaining the shape of the tin. There is but one kind of oyster which produces pearls to any considerable extent, although they can occasionally be found in other species of oysters, and even in muscles. LAST SENSATION!
