Horal anti irtatc Nrtos. Spring moving has commenced. Are our fish-market nu n necessarily sell-fish people? This is the last week of school in the village district, previous to a vacation of four weeks. lion. Wm. (». Barrows of Brunswick, has been nominated by the Governor Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Tilt* rate of assessment of the State tax the present year has been fixed at six mills on a dollar, and one cent on each poll. Persons employed in the post office are nut necessarily men ot letters. Sotuc o! them are paper men. The lirst robin, the lirst bluebird, and tbe advance guard of tile wild geese tribe are eagerly looked fur. Some of tbe mills upon the Augusta dam have commenced operating agai 1, tbe head of water being sufficient to enable them to do a moderate business. A Gardiner render writes : “There has been much said about gold going to pat. Can any one tell me when it will reach maim, as the old lady seems to he left out in the cold." Recent disasters caused by carelessly hand ling inflammable or explosive materials, should warn people as their danger, and the necessi ty of being careful. The soft weather is thawing and rotting the ice so rapidly that danger from a freshet will he out of the question in a few days if the moderate thaw continues. Schoolmasters before the light thrown in upon their work by county institutes and other reformatory agencies, belonged to tbe cane nine species. The following nominations by the Governor have been eonfi uned by the Conn' ll Nathan French, Aul urn, Judge of the Police Court. William K. Morris, Portland, Judge of Mu nicipal Court. C. D. Cutter of Sahattis, a recent graduate of the Maine Wesleyan Seminary, has rc c ived the appn n'ment of Sup. rint ndent "f t'le Institute for the Deaf and Dumb in \r km«a>, at a salary of ?2100 a year, and board. Only two surprise parties la-t evening, one at the house ot Mis. Mender, and another at the house of Mrs. Macomher. It was not a very good night for surprise parties or we should have more to chronicle. This matter, horn of benevolence and good feeling, is be coming contagious. The following arc tile officers of the Lyceum connected w itli the high school : President, V C. Kutherford; Vice Pre-i ll, nt. G. Klien Perkins; Secretary. Miss. Liz zie Vivian: Treasurer. Miss Julia Moor. Kx eciilivc Committee. Misses. Howe, Samp-on and Ladd, and Messrs. Macomher and Whit ney. The saving of ice in the Southern State* lia* been so limited that the people in that sec tion much expect to pay high prices for the cooling luxury in the forthcoming «ea«on. Those who have put up lee oil the Kennebec for Southern markets, we are glad to know* will reap rich rewards for their enterprise, which at one time appeared remarkably du bious. The employing of teachers has been trans fei red by legislative net from district agents to the superintending school committee*. This places the w hole responsibility of good "nr poor teachers, and consequently good or poor schools, where it properly belongs. The committees will undoubtedly he subject to se vere censure if they do not discharge the full measure of their duty. There was a happy surprise party at the house of Capt. Samuel trill on the east side of the river, on Monday evening. A large com pany assembled, bringing with them money, provisions and groceries, such as are used in every "well regulated family.” These arti cles were left wiili the family for tin ir use and comfort, liev. Mr. Moor, in behalf the Capt. and his family, thanked the company for their generous gifts. Bethlehem Lodge K; and A. M. of this city, held a meeting on Monday evening for work, at which there was a large attendance, not only of members of the lodge, but vistiug members from Augu-ta lodge, Winthrop, and several members of the Legislature, who had accepted an invitation to be present. Tin spacious lodge room was well filled at the opening. The special work in hand was ac complished without discord or jar. which speaks well for the proficiency attained by the officers. The details must forever remain as a scaled luniks hut when the work of the cv. - ningwas finished, what followed was of a pub lic character, and the person who would ke, p it secret must have a very p-mr appetite mat little relish for social and intellectual enjoy ment. A supper was furnished at the Cony House by the Masonic fraternity of the citv, at d more than one hundred members of tl e gentle brotherhood sat at the board. Tint supper was prepared bv the C onv Brother-, and furnished at a liberal discount from usual rates. It was gotten up in a style that clearly demonstrated that the proprietors of this new and popular public lmu-e know how to "keep n hotel.” The tables were spread with great taste and liberality. Ample justice was done to the good things with which they were la den. After the music of the knives and forks had subsided and the physical wants of the brethren had been well attended to, the \V. M. of Bethlehem Lodge. Mr. F. A. Crowell, whn deserves much credit for the perfectness of all the arrangements, called the company to order and introduced John S. Sayward, Esq., of Boxford, Mass., formerly of Augusta, who opened the intellectual part of the entertain ment by a true Masonic speech, in which lie dwelt upon the sublime lessons taught by the Masonic emblems. He was followed in brief remarks by Mr. Moody, AA*. Al. of Temple Lodge, AA'inthrop. l)r. Geo. E. Briekett, Mr. Cobb of Bath, Hon. AA’arren Johnson, Mr. Webb and Dr. Cochrane of AA'inthrop, Dr. AV. L. Thompson. Howard Owen, Dr. J. \A\ Toward, and liev. Dr. Kicker. The exercises closed with the singing of "Old Turner.” The whole affair was one of unalloyed pleas ure, and will form a blight spot in the lives uf all who were present. He said the letter sent by Prince Bonaparte was not a provocation but an insult. Being asked why he wore arms he replied that he lived in a district outside of the city, and go ing home late at night was obliged to carry arms for self protection. He incidentally blamed the government for its delay in the arrest of the Prince after shooting, whereupon he was reprimanded hy the President of the court. The Prince arose excitedly and de clared that Villere and Groustet had both sworn that they would yet shoot him. This the witness denied. The audience seemed inclined to 1»i>s the Prince. The Procurer General insisted that witness he removed to ■ prison, and the lawyers for prosecution de manded that he should remain and give the remainder of his testimony.
