IRISH BI LLS
It was an Irishman who wrote to his
son in the “ouht counthry,"—“Come till
Ameriky, Mike. ’Tis a line counthry to
get & living in. All ye have to do is get a
three cornered box and fill it wid bncks,
and carry it till the top of a three-story
building, and the man at the top does all
the work." It was another ot the same
nationality, who hearing that his widowed
mother had married again since he quitted
Ireland, exclaimed,—“Mnrther! I hope
she wont have a son oulder than me; if
she does I shall lose the whole estate."
Singularly confused ideas must the son
of Erin have of death, for it is related of
one whose master had died suddenly,
leaving a letter ready for mail, that fie
dispatched it after adding at the bottom:
“Since writing the above I have died;"
of still another who wished to inform a
friend in a neighboring town of the death
of a fellow workman, that he sent a dis
patch signed with the deceased man's
name, reading: “James, come home; I
died last night;” and an Irish lady ordered
her body to be opened after her death, lest
she should be buried alive. It was a
Hibernian gentleman who told a friend
who was studying for the ministry: “I
hope I may live to hear you preach my
funeral sermon”; it was an Emerald
Islander who, being asked to go on the
deck of a vessel when she was in danger
of foundering, said he had no wish to
see himself drowned. It was Michael
O'Mulligan who remarked, with much
good sense, that ‘'a man gets a' very poor
show who waits till he is kilt before he
acts on the defensiveand the following
is found on an Irish tombstone: “Here
lies John Highly and his wffe, who were
drowned in their passage from America.
Had they both lived, they would have been
buried here."—Appleton's Journal.
Dress, dress, always dress! Where is
the prophet among women who will eman
cipate us from the tyranny of clothes? Is
she yet born ? If so, would that we knew
the Hethlehem of her nativity, that our
wise women might hasten to bow before
her and bless her coming. Not till our
dress is more simple, healthful and com
fortable will it be possible for women to
compete with men in the world of work,
and yet we cannot afford to sacrifice the
element of beauty. Where is the genius
who will combine what is needed, and
give us a dress that will express and not
imprison us; of which we shall be as un
conscious as our souls are of our bodies.
A dress free from impertinence, that will
not thrust itself between us and the woman
we seek, but take its proper place as a
secondary and altogether subordinate fact.
I know of nothing more truly representa
tive of the worst aspects of woman's char
acter and condition at the present day than
her dress. It is “a thing of shreds and
patches," full of pretense and unreality.
It is often composed of the flimsiest ma
terials, it consists of bits, it is fastened
with pins, and a woman once taken to
pieces the work of reconstruction is truly
formidable; from first to last her dress is
without unity harmony or completeness.
“Why does it take you longer to dress
than it does me ?” said an impatient hus
band, whose morning paper lacked its
appropriate adjunct—the cup of coffee—
waiting the wife’s appearance at the break
fast table. “For several very good rea
sons,” said the wife. “In the first place,
I have three times as many things to put
on as you. I know, for I counted them.
You have ten pieces, I have thirty; yours
fasten with buttons, mine with pins;
yours might be called self-adjusting, while
mine need an endless amount of fixing,
and then think of the difference in our
hair." Here, surely, is food for thought.
How to simplify dress, how to lessen the
cost of living, how to make our home life
more enjoyable, and social intercourse
more rational and satisfactory are impor
tant questions; questions that arc press
ing upon us for immediate soluiton.—Celia
Burleigh, in Womans Journal.
