At the great lire iu.St. Paul last Thurs day. two brothers, named Carl and Au gust Mueller, who had a room in the Con cert I lull building, were cut oft' l'rom es cape by the rapid progress of the Humes and smoke. They appeared at an upper story window, seventy-five or eighty feet from the ground. The St. Paul Pioneer •says: “The two brothers appeared to hesitate, when they appeared at the window, and some of the spectators cried out to them to jump. The youngest was let out ot the window first, the oldest brother holding him by the hand, both being apparently unwilling to part company in that trying moment. Finally the suspended man was drawn back into the building, as though determined to remain instead of taking the horrible risk of such a dreadful leap. An instant after, however, a human form sud denly came through the window, and for a second was suspended in mid-air. The horrified spectators shuddered and turned away their eyes. A dull thud was heard, and the mangled form of one of the broth ers rolled apparently lifeless down the steep declivity twenty-five or thirty feet beyond where it first struck, where lie lav motionless and groaning. The seeond brother followed immediately after, aud for the second time, within a moment al most, the speechless spectators witnessed the terrible leap, lloth the brothers were carefully picked up and laid upon beds which were quickly brought, and after wards placed beneath the grateful shade of a tree that was near by. “As soon as it was known that two men hud taken such a perilous leap the crowd began to surge down the bluff to the point where the men lay, and it was with great difficulty that they could be kept a suffi cient distance from the sufferers to give the latter sufficient air. An examination showed how much they were injured. “Shortly after being picked up they were taken to the residence of their broth er-in-law, where a critical examination showed that they had received injuries as follows : Carl has two or three, ribs broken on the right side, one, of which penetrated the right lung, making a cavity through which the air escapes when he breathes. One side of his face is badly bruised, and lie is otherwise badly injured. Yet the phy-ieians think with good care he may recover. “The younger brother, August, suffered a compound fracture of the w l ist, and re ceived some injury to his spine, besides severe bruises, lie is not considered fa tally injured.” Pure Drugs & Chemicals FOR SALE At the Lowost Rates !
