FEMALE REMARKS. BY JOSH BILLINGS. Dear girls, are yti in search ov a hus band P This iz a pumper, and yu are not re quested tew say “lTes" out loud, but are expekted tew throw yure eyes down onto the earth, az tho yu was looking for a pin, and reply tew the interrogatory with a kinder draulin sigh, az tho yu waz eatin an oyster, juice and all, off "from the half shell. Not tu press so tender a theme until it bektims a thorn in the flesh, we will pre soom (tew avoid argument) that yu are on the lookout for sumthing in the male line tew boost yu in the uphill ov life, and tew keep his eyes on the brichin when yu be gin tew go down the other side ov the mountain. Let me. give yu sum small chunks ov advice how tew spot your few tcr husband. 1. The man who iz gealons ov every little attensbun which yu git from sum other fellow, yu will find, after yu are married tew him, luvs himself more than he duz yu, and what yu mistook for sol issitude, yu will discover, haz changed into indifference. Jealousy isn't a heart disease; it is a liver complaint. -. A mustash iz not indispensable: it iz only a little more hair, and iz a good deal like moss and other excrcssences— often duz the best on sile that wont raize anything else. Dont fergit that these things which you admire in a phellow before marriage, yu will probably have to admire in a husband after; and a mustash will git to be very weak diet after a long time. II husbands could be took on trial, az Irish cooks are, two-thirds ov them would probably be returned; hut there don't seem to he enny law for this. There fore, girls, yu will see that, after yu git a man, yu have got tew keep him, even if yu loos on him. Consequently, il'yu hav got enny cold vittles in the house, try him on them once iu a while during scouring season, and if lie swallows them well, aud says he will take sum more, he iz a man who, when blue Monday cums, will wash well. 4. Don’t marry a phellar who iz alwus a tolling how hiz mother duz things. It iz az hard tew suit these men az it iz to wean a young one. 5. If a young man kan beat you plaving on a planner, and kaut hear a fish Lorn playing on the street without turning a hack summerset on akount of the music that iz iu him, i say ship him; he migh answer to tend a baby, hut if yu set him hoeing out the garden, you will find yu hav got to do it yourself. A man whose wholheft lies in music (and not very hefty at that) ain't no better lor a husband than a seedlitz powder; hut if lie luvs to listen while yu sing sum gentle ballad, yu will find him mellow aud soft. But don't mar ry ennybody for jist one virtew enny quicker than yu would flop a man for jist one fault. 6. It iz one ov the most tnffest things for a feniail to he an old maid successfully. A grate inennyhaz tried it and made a had * jub ov it. Everybody seems to look upon old maids jist as they do on dried herbs— in the garret, handy for sickness—and therefore, girls, jt aint a mistake that yu should be willing to swop yurselt oph, with sum true fellow for a husband. The swop iz a good one, hut don’t swop for enny mail who iz rospeektable because hiz fathar iz. You had better he an old maid for 4 thousand years, and then join the Shakers, than to bnv repentance at his price. No woman ever made this trade who didn’t get either a phool a mean cuss or a cheep clown for a husband. 7. In digging down into this subject, I find that the digging growes harder the further I git. It iz much esier tew in form yu who not tew many than who tew tor the reason there is more ov them. 1 don’t think yu will follow my advice if I give it, and so I’ll keep it, for I look upon advice as I do upon caster ile—— a mean dose tew give and a mean dose tew take. But I must say one thing, girls, or spile. If yu kan find a bright-eyed, healthy and well-balasted hoy, who looks upon poverty as a sassy child looks upon wealth—who had rather sit down on the curbstun in front ov the 5th avenue hotel, and eat a ham sandwitch than to go inside and nin into debt for his dinner and toothpick— one who is armed with that kind of pluck that mistakes a defeat for a victory, my adviceiz tew take him, body ami soul— snare him at once; for he iz a stray trout, a breed very skase in our waters. Take him, 1 say, hild outo him, as hor nets hild onto a tree.
