Jt is understood that Judge Dickerson of Belfast will preside. Many farmers in Brunswick who have usual ly had a sufficient quantity of hay for their own use, will this year either have to buy or lessen their farm stock. N. K. Sawyer, Esq., editor of tin* Ells worth Amcsican, is in the city attending to a sick son, who is now prostrated at his hoard ing house with typhoid fever. A mean old chap in Lewiston gets ofl* by paying his preacher half a dollar every time he goes to church. How it is that a person “fails,” and keeps right on in business “as though nothing had happened.” is a mystery that remains to be solved. Some people are born to tail—it's their forte. Inquiries are frequently made for rents in this city. They are very scarce. The edi tor of the Sewer has x Mnall room vacant in the upper story of his earthly tabernacle, but it is hardly tit for a decent tenant. It is learned from the Secretary of the Knox and Lincoln Musical Association that the annual convention of the Association will he held at Damariseotta. The sophistry and ingenuity of the Whig, adopted by the Journal, will not save him i .%lr. Blaine) from a just condemnation.—Main Sewer. Five or six thousand majority next Sept, for Mr. Itlainc, will lie the usual “condemna tion” tliat the republicans of this district are in the habit of saving for Mr. Blaine. Let tile strongest man of the opposition he brought forward, for the purpose of demonstrating the precise manner in which Mr. Blaine will lie condemned. Mr. Zina O. Sprague is building a neat and commodious dwelling house on his lot on Sewall street, in this city. Although he is employed ten hours each day in the railroad shop, the house has been erected during the season, almost by his own hands, in the hours that men usually take for refreshment and rec reation. This is manifesting a spirit of energy and enterprise which if adopted by other me chanics who are paying a large portion of their income for house rent, would result in the es tablishment of many happy homes throughout (he city- Mr. Sprague is putting a roof on his house, with the prospect of completing the whole before snow flies. The Standard maintains its pet name, the “Main Sewer,” by receiving into its stomach this week several gallons of sour ale. Adver tisements, correspondence, anything of a low character, unfit for publication in any decent sheet, is sure to be produced in its columns. I'erhaps this would lie well enough if the Sewer had a good outlet: but when it is full, it throws its dirty stuff upon the counters of our stores, into the nice new boxes of the post office, on the tables of counting rooms, and even into the doors of private residences. We trust that the city in its system of sewerage, will make some provision for an outlet of this sewer which is becoming so offensive, es pecially in this warm weather. Allen Lambard, Esq., of this city, who is interested in the benevolent enterprises of the day, has we understand, purchased the dwell ing bouse and lot of l)r. I. In this city but little damage was done, one house being struck by lightning with slight damage, and trees being twisted and broken down. In the adjoining towns tile storm was much more severe, and the dam age much greater. In Hampden, Orrington, Bucksport, Brewer and lloldcn, houses and barns were blown down, fences demolised, and in some instances, all the glass on the side of the houses exposed to the storm, were entirely broken out by the hail, which tell so thickly that it lay in winrows. The Kmperor left the Tuilleries at 0 o'clock on his return to St. Cloud, and at that hour the chambers were informed that no declara tion would bo made by the government to-day. While the ministerial counsel was in session a despatch was received from the King of Prussia, which changed the situation, and there is now reason to believe peace may he preserved. The agitation throughout the city i> extreme. The majority of the evening pupejjp maintain a warlike tone, and groups of people in the streets seem strongly in favor of war. The report that the Egyptian troops had landed at Bay Ashub on the Bed Sea. and captured the Australian trading station is offi cially contradicted. Mr. Gladstone stated in the House of Com mons to-day in reply to the question of Disraeli that the British government in com mon with other European cabinets sustain* *1 the position taken by the Duke De Gramftmnt, which was that Spain was entitled to choose anyone for a King except a German Prince. There was a wild panic on the streets after change hours to-day. An official state ment that the Bank of England has received £131,000 is not sufficient to restore confi dence, and much uneasiness still prevails. It is positively asserted that Count Benc detti has been ordered hack to France, and he only awaits the departure of Baron Yan Werther, Prussian Minister from Paris.
