It seems to its the city sets a had example in the matter of obstructing the highways when it allows the Sprinkler to occupy one third of the width of Water St., for forty eight, twenty-four or even twelve hours at a time, while there is “ample room and verge enough” in Market Square for a dozen Sprink lers. V.,) says : “They sing the music of heart.” The Christian Advocate says: “They are mins trels of good, speaking to the great heart ot humanity in soothing strains of beauty.” Their announcement will appear in our issue of Monday. stolen Horse Recovered. We understand that the horse stolen from the stable of Mr. Charles II. Whitten, black smith, on the Augusta and Winthrop road, has been recovered in IJangor. It seems that the thieves—there are two of them— came from Boston with a stolen horse; that at Augusta they stole Mr. Whitten's horse, turning the other one out to grass, and pro ceeded to Bangor; t^fat at Bangor they let loose Mr. Whitten’s horse and stole another. The owner ol the Bangor horse followed the villians to the vicinity of Lincolnvillc, where he found his horse, and also the thieves asleep under the wagon. Being alone he went to seek for help, and upon returning saw that the thieves had taken to the woods, and so they have escaped. A sojourn by the seaside, at Thomuston would be eminently proper for them. Tallorand and Louis Philllppe Bobbing Around. It may not be generally known by the pres ent generation, that Talleyrand, the brilliant and celebrated Frenchman, visited Augusta and Ilallowell, in 1794. Mr. North, in his forthcoming History ot' Augusta, says during the progress of the French Revolution, Tal leyrand was obliged to flee to England, and even there it was too hot for him. He took passage in a ship which landed him at \\ is cassct, and visited the scat of Government at Philadelphia. He came to Hallowed in com pany with a young Frenchman, and brought a letter to Col. North, who was nbsetrt. Col. North’s oldest son, however, received him, and Mrs. North, thinking it necessary to pay him some attention, invited hint to dine; he accepted ami was met at dinner by some la dies whose presence was unexpected to him, and to whom he apologized, saying; he “did not expect to meet ladies.” He stopped at the house of “Billy Pitt,” who then kejjf the best tavern in the place. At the “Hook” he stopped with Charles Vaughan and slept in the “old mid house,” then occupied by Vaughan near. Bombahook creek. Talley rand's companion is supposed to have been the young Duke of Orleans, Louis Phillippe, afterwards King of France. When at Mrs. North’s he pretened to her that he could not | speak English, but she afterwards learned I that he could and did. Thr (ourt. The grand jury came in at ten o’clock A. WAR ENTHUSIASM IN FRANCE DAMPENING. Napoleon’s Health. IMPORTANT FROM SAARBRUCK. HARD FIGHTING AT HEISENBERG. Heavy Loss to the French. rHE PRUSSIANS ADVANCE TEN MILES INTO FRENCH TERRITORY. Prussian Account of the Affair at Saar* brack. London, Aug. 1. The Paris correspondent ot the Daily New s writes on Tuesday that the enthusiasm for war has entirely disappeared in Paris. It is low- evident that the war with Germany means a prolonged struggle against a million irmed combatants, who are determined to defend their own country and if possible to give the French such a lesson that hereafter the Emperor’s peculiar mode of making his reign an era of peace by attacking his neigh bors, will he rendered impossible. The an nouncement that the fortifications of Paris are to be placed in a condition ot defence and the Emperor’s admission that the war w ill be long, have singularly dampened the ardor of those who imagined that within a fortnight a glorious peace, which would re establish the supremacy of the French arms, would be signed in Berlin. We are still told that the Germans are trending at the idea of encountering the mitrailleurs and turees hut the legend has lost its effect. A special from Paris Tuesday, says that the Emperor’s physician has joined the army, on the pretext of forming an ambulance corps: hut everybody knows that he goes as a special attendant upon the Emperor, the state of whose malady does not permit him to dispense with his most trusted physician. A special correspondent at Saarbruck, writes on Tuesday morning: Our guns are being brought up opposite the French, and w ill reply if the French open fire. The same correspondent writing Monday night says :—I thought at tile end of my la«t letter that my contribution from Saarbruck was finished, and had set out for the railway station, when a communication was received from one of the best informed men in the place made me determined to say, and to-day the monotony of Saarbruck has been broken. Two thousand men with lb guns have come within a mile of the town, and two whole reg ime. ts are lying in the immediate neighbor hood. The first and third battalions, and the 40th Hohenzollcrn fusiliers made their appearance on the Saarlouis road at the top ot a hill. 2 miles out of Saarbruck. about five o'clock, and with them came lb guns, and a long line of wagons. They did not come into town, hut turned into a large field high upon the hill, where they will bivouac to night. There was great joy at the news of their approach, and the towns-people went to the field to receive them w ith provisions and presents of cigars, &c. ••Gott Seilab" came from the mouth of a patriot at im side, as the first of the cannon appeared. When I wrote my first letter, there were hardly more than 500 men in Saarbruck. and had the French made a forward move, even with a small part of their forces about Forback, we could have made no resistance to them w hat ever; but front one source or other, our force was curiously exaggerated. The Paris papers have credited us with an extra ordinary garrison. There are at present in Saarbruck or just outside of the place. 3000 men. and the 4tfth regiment with lb guns, within a short distance. Cartsiu-he, Aug. 4. There was hard fighting at Weisenhurg yesterday. To-day a large force of Prussians advanced between Weisenhurg and Lauter bourg, ten miles into French territory, driv ing the advanced post of the enemy and des troying a mile of railroad between Lauter bourg and Strasbourg, along which it is sup posed McMahon was preparing to advance. The French loss w as heavy, including many prisoners. Bekmx, Aug. 4. The Prussian government furnishes the fol lowing account of the affair at Saarbrucken : The feeble garrison held Saarbrucken until the French deployed and advanced in three columns. The Prussians then retired to a position north of the town to observe the ene my. In spite of the free use by the French of tin- Mitrailleurs, artillery and Chasscpots. Our losses arc only two officers and seventy men. The loss of the French appeared to he more serious. Our troops were admirably cool. FROM WASHINGTON. Washington, Aug. 4. Murderous Assault. Joseph Segar, an ex-member of Congress from Virginia, to-day severely assaulted Win. S. Lincoln, an ex-mciuber of Congress trom New York, at the railroad station, with a cane, for an alleged calumnious statement about him in reference to a re-charter of the Fredericksburg and Alexandria Railroad Co. When brougld before the Police Court he de clared that lie regarded it as his duty to in flict chastisement but denied the charge tha he intended to kill Mr. Lincoln, lie was held to bail iu $.1,000. Attorney General Akcrmann declines ad dressing the Southern Republican Club, be cause he would have to allude to the Georgia case which may soon come before him for his legal opinion. It is understood that he favors an election in that State this fall. FROM BELFAST. BeLI AST, Aug. 4. Railroad Matters. By a large and almost unanimous vote, this city voted to-day to raise 5 per cent, of its valuation, in aid of the construction of the Mooschead Lake Railroad. This in sures the completion of the enterprise, in time to meet the lease of the Maine Central Railroad. The Coit excurtionists from Worcester, Mass., numbering three hundred and forty persons, accompanied by the Worcester Cornet Band, arrived here at noon to-day in the steamer New Brunswick. The party left at 4 o’clock for Rockland, where they will remain until Friday morning and then go to Portland. Their arrival was not seasonably announced, or a formal reception would have awaited them. FROM NEW YORK. New York, Aug. 3. The Nathan Murder. No fact* either of interest or importance, not previously made public, were made pub lic at the Nathan murder inquest, which after the examination of officers Mangani and Evans and the two carpenters employed in the house the day before the murder, ad journed until Monday. The three sons of the deceased were present during the pro ceedings. Washington to whom suspicion has been directed, appeared in good spirits. Commodore Vanderbilt has purchased the Mercer Street, ltev. I'r. Booth’s I’resbytarian church, and presented it to Rev. Dr. Deems, pastor of the church, for strangers for his Evangelical labor. The act was spontaneous on the Commodore's part without solicita tion from Dr. Deems or any one else. FROM BOSTON. Boston, Aug. 4. Railroad Accident. N. W. Davis, an attache at the McClean Hospital, was struck by a train in Somerville last night and killed. FROM CONCORD. Concord, N. II., Aug. 4. Damage by Lightning. The buildings owned and occepied by Win. Pillsbury at Wilmot Flat, were struck by lightning and burned to-day. Tne barn where the fire was first discovered was well filled with hay and grain and is a total loss. The contents of the house were mostly saved. The loss will probably reach 83,000; insured for 81,000. FINANCIAL & COMMERCIAL. New York Money Market. New Yokk, Aug. 4. Gold closed 12236.
