Mr. William Jordan, of Thomaston. has in
his garden a squash vine that grew two feet in
forty-eight hours, and six feet in seven days.
The Home Journal says Daniel Blake of
Gardiner, who recently had his arm taken off,
on account of cancer, is out and apparently
cured.
The contract for building the new county
jail nt Alfred lias been awarded to G. M.
Chase of Portland.
Ilev. Sanford P. Smith of the Canton Tlieo*
logical School, will preach in the Winlhrop
Street L'niversalist Church to-morrow.

in Belfast.
Hev. Win. A. Drew of this city, will deliv
er his lecture on the “Pilgrim Fathers,” in

Hev. William Spaulding, from the Bangor

the Second Congregational Church in New

The Maine Temperance Advocate has trans
ferred its lists of subscribers to the Hiverside
Kcho, nud the publication of the Advocate
ceases.
The annual Convention of the Swedenbor
gian Churches of Maine and New Hampshire
met in Portland on FTidav and will continue
three days.
The Bunker Hill Hose Company of Boston,
will make an excursion to Maine, September
13th, first ^isifing Bath as guests of steamer
No. 1. They will afterwards visit Lewiston
as the guests of the Androscoggin and Saco.
The Whig Icarus that apple-trees in (Arring
ton, which were stripped by tbe serious torna
do of a few weeks ago. have again blossomed
and commenced spring business anew. I.o- ,
oust trees have also blossomed.
The m ighlior* of James II. Hutchinson of
Fayetti—who was incapacited by accident
from performing his u.-ual labors on the farm
—voluntarily turned out last week, and cut,
cured and stowed his hay crop for him.
The fall term of the Maine Wesleyan Sem
inary and Female College in this place. 1ms
just commenced with almut 150 students. The
prospect is good for a full and prosperous
term.
The Republican Journal says Gen. Henry
W. Cunningham, who five years ago moved
to Virginia, is now on a visit to Belfast—bis
old home. He has just been re-elected Sheriff
of l’rince William County, Va.
In England what we call sand paper is
called glass cloth, the sand being cemented on
cloth instead of paper ns in this country. The
Brunswick Telegraph thinks that for durabili
ty and efficiency the English article must be
vastly better than ours.
The fall term of the SkowheganJIigh School
and Bloomfield Academy will commence Mon
day, Sept 5th, under the direction of Orville
B. Grunt, A. M. The Reporter says Mr.
Grant goes into the school with a flattering
reputation for a young man both as a teacher
and scholar.
The American says General Thom was in
Ellsworth lust week esnniitiing the river pre
paratory to commencing operations in remov
ing obstructions. The General, on his way
there, visited the Narrows at Sullivan, and
made a map of that locality and the ob
structions to uavigation at the Falls.
Master George 11. Bowker, formerly em
ployed in the Western Union Telegraph Com
pany's office in.this city, has recently been
transferred from one of the telegraph offices
in New York City to the Atlantic 4 Pacific
Telegraph Company's office, in Eockport, N.
Y. of which he is now the manager.
The members of the Cushnoc Fishing As
sociation are hereby notified that the Sixth
Annual Excursion of the Association w ill take
place on Wednesday, August 17th, to Mouse
Island, Boothbay Harbor; going by ears and
steamer. Cars leave Augusta at 5.43 A.M.,
and boat from Bath at 8; returning, leave
Mouse Island at 3.30 P. M., arriving at Au
gusta at 8 F. M. Mouse Island is too w ell
known to require any lengthy reference to it,
and it is designed that ibis Excursion shall bo
the best one ever enjoyed by the Association.
AY'e learn from the Telegraph that Mr. 11. \
AY. Wheeler lias been engaged by the Port- i
land & Kennebec Haiiroad Company as ticket
agent and railroad telegraph operator at the
Brunswick station, and the office of the AVcst
ern Union Telegraph Company is soon to be
removed to tlw ticket office and placed under
Mr. AA'heelers’s charge. Mr. Wheeler is an
experienced operator, having been 13 years in
the business, nine of which were passed in
Boston. Mr. Townsend is simply relieved of
the duties of ticket agent. He remains as
depot master and freight agent.
Janie* S. Cooper, Esq., died very sudden
ly, July 27th, nt bis residence in Aiuhcst,
Mass., aged GO years. The Machias Union
says he was a native of Mathias, and a son
of the late General John Cooper, who was
Sheriff ot the County for several years prior
to 1821. For many years, the deceased was
partner of the late Hon. Geo. Downes, of
Calais, in the practice of law, the firm being
known ns Downes & Cooper. Mr. Cooper
visited Calais about four weeks ago, at that
time in excellent health. He removed from
Calais about four years ago.

The London (England) Daily Times, whose
correct musical criticisms are copied over the
whole continent of Europe, says of the Alle
ghanlans:

been beard in London within our memory.
To say that the music produced by these ex
traordinary bell-ringers is sw eet, is to men
tion its smallest merit. It is something more
1 than sw eet. It is not only melodious, but pure,
tender, sympathetic, and expressive to a de
gree to which no written description can do
adequate justice.”
Meonian Hall w ill undoubtedly be filled this
evening, to hear this famous troope.

The Oracle sty les Mr. Joint Matson of Wis
casset the “oldest inhabitant. Ue i* nearly
89 years of age, and is remarkably smart for
a person of bis years. “On the 2d day of
April, 1801" lie says, “I was on board the
brig Greyhound, ('apt. Mofflt, then owned by
Billy Gray of Boston, lying off the liarlmr of
Copenhagen, when the city was bombarded
by Lord Nelson and Admiral Barker.” Mr.
Matson w as born in Blcnsburg, Denmark:
came to this country in an American ship, at
the age of 5 years, located in Wiscassct, and
hag lived there ever since, except when at sea.
He has always been blessed with good health,
and in mind Is apparently as young as when
he sailed “On board the Greyhound.” in duys
of yore.
\V. 15. Grecnough, Jr., of Boston has, pur
chased of Henry Chase, E-q., of this city the
copyright of the Augusta, Hallowc-11 and
Gardiner Directory, and will soon publish a
General and Business Directory of the three
cities. His agents have begun their canvass
of Augusta to obtain the necessary informa
tion. We understand that a thorough can
vass is to be made, with a view of making the
look entirely reliable. A good Diicctory is
very valuable*, and we hope our merchants
and business men will give the publisher
ample support in the way of advertisements
anil subscriptions.
Recently the Mechanic Iilues of Bortland,
made a piiguimage to the shrine of tin ir de

full monument lias been erected in Gorham.

at Gorham, beaded by Col. Robie and al ly
assisted bv Col. Millet, At the monument,
eloquent spec-elics were made by Col. R lie,
Gov. Washburn. Mayor Kingsbury. Mr. Win
ship, Col. Bradbury and Mr. King.
The Whig says Mr. 8. W. Sawyer, who lias
long been ciigagid in the photograph business
in Bangor, has taken up his residence in
Chicago. Ill , where he lias opened a saloon,
and w ill continue tin- manufacture of pictures.

Hon Win. B. Haines will be glad to learn

show the popular clamor against Napoleon ’
to be increasing in intensity. His abdica- !

The riotous spirit in Marseilles, Toulouse |

The Bavarian army has passed through the '

Gen. Sheridan has left Berlin for the King's

The Queen announces that she will take |
personal charge of the wounded of both na- .
lions, and the treatment shall be identical. j
The French prisoners as they pass through
railroad stations receive nothing but kindness.
The citizens and volunteers give them re
freshments, cigars, etc., and the ladies enter
the cars and going trorn man to man otfer
them paper and pencil and volunteer to write
to their friends for them.

From the best information it appears that
the garrison of Strasbourg consists of only
one regiment on foot, and as many of the Na- 1
tional Guards. The supplies in the place are !
in proportion to the garrison; therefore geige
is impossible, and the capture of the place :
will be an easy matter.
The 1st Prussian Corps d’armec is at Phil
lieburg.
The Berlin correspondent to the Times j
wtites that England will join with Austria in ;
the league proposed by Von Beust for guar- ;
anteeing the belligerents against loss of terri
tory. England's reason fur declining is that
tile league could not save the North German
Confederacy in ease Prussia should be dc- |

the Empress Eugenie and the Piince Imper
ial are in lodging at St. .Jphn's Wood. The
Weekly Register has the same report, which
however, gives it with caution, so as not to
place too much confidence in its correctness. ;

The Journals of Metz publish Marshal
McMahon’s report to the Emperor. Tile re
port says that the enemy in greatly superior
numbers lagan the attack at 7 o’clock on
Stiiurda) morning, the first attack having
her n repulsed about noon. In the evening,
they re-opened the contest, throwing for- j
tvaid numerous sharp-shoothers, protected |
by six guns in a commanding position. At \
four o’clock in the afternoon, McMahon was i
forced to order a retreat, which was effected
in good order, the enemy’s pursuit being
without vigor, and by no means troublesome.
The Marshal was able to send only a partial
list of the killed and wounded.
A despatch from Metz dated August 1 Ith*
8-13 P. M., says it has rained all day

The retreat of McMahon and Failley has
been accomplished in excellent order.
Marshal Bazaine is engaged in visiting
and inspecting the troops under his com
mand.
The report that the Prussians occupy
Nancy is tulsc.
The circular from the Minister of the In
terior, requests the various department* to
encourage the formation of companies of
National gardes. Volunteers and francs
tirenis arc to take the field at once. They
will receive arms as soon as possible, but in
the meantime tiiey should assemble at the
chief towns of the department to organize
and drill. They will lie paid one franc per
day from the date ot enlistment.
The Journal official says that the Ministers
of Wur Hnd the Interior, on ussuming con
trol of their departments, immediately took

departments, which show that the wheat
crops of 1870 will exceed the yearly average
40 per cent.
FROM NEW YORK.
New York, Aug. 12.
Terrible Collision. <
As the steamer Norwalk was rapidly i
steaming from Covey Island to this city to
niglit, w ith a thousand passengers on hoard, '
she collided with a sloop. The shock was
extremely violent, shaking her from stem o
stern, and causing a fearful panic among the
passengers. Several were knocked into the i
water, among them two children, who fed
from their mothers arms.
It is supposed that ut least eight lives were
lost, but neither names or number can lie- as- i
certained to-night. A tug bout hastened to
the rescue hut picked up only two men. The
Norwalk was found to be seriously damaged.
Her wheelhouse was carried away, and a
large hole made in her side, through which
the water was pouring. The tug took her in
tow and reached Atlantic dock, Brooklyn,
just in time to discharge the passengers be- ;
loro sin; sunk.
The Price of Ice.
Tile price of ice lias been advanced to $20 ;
per ton, 33 per cent., and sales less than 25 ;
cents worth to families is forbidden.

appointed to carry out the objects of the ,
meeting, and a resolution adopted expressive
of the sentiments of those interested in the !

A your.g lady visiting Mr. Cyrus II. Cutler
in Arlington, was drowned Thursday in Mys
tic Pond, while bathing, in company with Mr.
Cutter’s daughter. The body was recovered
in about ten minutes, but all efforts to resus- I
date her were unavailing. She was 22 years !
of age.
