THE DECISIVE BATTLE TO BE FOUGHT BEFORE CHALONS. McMahon’s Retreat to Chalons Re- j, ported to be Cut Off. __ METZ PREPARED FOIt A SEIGE OF j LONG DURATION. I. Capture of Fortress Marshal and ' Sixty Cannon. CONFIRMATION OF TIIE PRUSSIAN ! •VICTORY BEFORE METZ. Particulars of the Battle. Loxdok, Aug. 1C. It is believed ihat Marshal Razaine leaves a strong garrison at Metz, and w ill fight the j decisive battle of the war on the plains of Champagne, before Chalons. Despatches received here from Paris state that serious apprehensions are felt that the Prussians have cut of) McMahon’s communi cation with Metz and prevented his retreat on Chalons. Metz is provisioned and othe'rwisu fully prepared for a soige of long duration. Sayerne, Aug. 10. Fortress Marshal, a small town a little north east of Nancy, 1ms been captured by a body of Bavarian troops, after a short bom bardment, and sixty cannon captured. New York, Aug. 10. A private despatch from London, dated at 10-3U A. M., c onfirms the French defeat, with fearful loss in the late battle. London, Aug. 15. Our special correspondent telegraphs from Luxembourg this aiternoon that the line to Metz is again open. The fighting lasted from tour until nine o'clock. Our special from I.udn igsltafen writes on Friday that the advance ot the southern army i had arrived at liagenau. Two lieutenants with a handful of cavalry entered the town and rode through the streets. On reaching the barracks they summoned the French to surrender. Men instantly threw their Chas st pots out of the windows, and in this man ner a few cavalry held and captured 200 prisoners, 130 horses and lit wagons filled with supplies. Since the battle of Weissett bttrg numbers of prisoners leave been cap- : tured daily. Many also hate tied to the, woods and villages and were compelled front J hunger to surrender. Thu country is ex hausted and the population almost famished. Great numbers of troops continue to ar rive front all parts of Germany. It is still considered uncertain whether the Emperor or Marshal Bazaine commands. No decree has yet made Bazaine Generalissimo. Count Palikao's is equivocal. Nothing proves that the Emperor may not at any moment re- : appear at the head of the army. Chaugar- j nter is in great favor, but no command lias yet been assigned him. Nothing is yet known of McMahon's posi tion. and it is probable that he w ill be unable to rejoin the army at a nearer point titan at Chalons. Later. Berlin. Aug. 16. j Late on Monday afternoon the first and i seventh Prussian army corps attacked the j French forces under the walls of Metz, and a sanguinary conflict ensued. The French were at length driven within the city, with a loss of 4.000 men. tin the same day a t grand reconnaissance finder King William in i person, maintained itself some hours within two lines of the French, without any effort on the part of the French to dislodge them. This shows utter demoralization of the French. London, Aug. 16. The following details of an assault upott Judge McCunn have been received here: On Saturday during the celebration of raising the seige, Londondcry Judge MeCunn was on a visit to Coleraine, a few miles east of Londondcry, and in the same county. While at the railroad station accompanied by two Priests, Mr. McKenna, one ot the editors of the Belfast Star, and some other friends, a mob of orangemen made an assault upon him and his companions. McKenna was roughly handled and others of the party hurt, but the Judge managed to escape without serious injury. The Bavarians navo not r>een supplied with the needle gun, but still use the old percussion lock muzzle-loaders. It is feared that McMahon’s Corps at and around Strasbourg is entirely entofl from the main body of the army. The following items are extracted from the French Official Bulletins: The Prussians arc not in any great force f before Strasbourg. The town of Bitche still holds out against the enemy. The Hailway Bridge at Tcrgenpin, on the ' line between Strasbourg and Basle has been destroyed by the enemy. The stories of the arrival of the Empress and Prince Imperial on English soil are re peated to-day. but they are untrue. It is cer tain that tin Prince Imperial is now in Paris. The Telegraph’s Paris Correspo dent says tlie French Chambers are unworthy of public respect. There is a growing and hitter feeling of hos tility to Napoleon in Paris. This feeling is now evinced towards tile Empress from the recent Ministerial appointments. Cries of | “Vive la Hepubliquc" are constantly heard lrom all parts of the city, and from all classes I of citizens. Reliable information here reports that the Emperor is in a very dejected state. His melancholy now appears deep seated, and be is constantly overheard repeating to hiuiscli “On ma Coupe.” Despatches from the Prussian Government to the Prussian Ambassador here are full of ! triumph at the early result of the war. I Experiments recently made with the Mi traillcurs at Shacburgness indicate the instru ment is a destructive one at close quarters, but that troops dependent on it may be anni hilated by artillory before the Mitrailleurs cun be got in range. The Times sympathizes strongly with the Prussians, and rejoices at their recent »uc j cess. VlKSKA, Aug. 1G. Barnn Von Bcust lias publicly denied any attempt on bis part to medi ate on questions at issue between France and Prussia. Paris, Aug. 1G. The Journal Official of to-day contains a decree declaring the cities of Cherbourg, Lor ient, Brest and Uochefort in a state of seige. • The French left two despatch boats in Ti ber on evacuating Home. An official despatch from the Prefect of Metz to the Minister of the Interior, is pub lished to-day. He says a body of German Uhlans have been seen in the neighborhood of Come rev, marching towards Hurledue, and that he has therefore cut the railway in that section to impede the advance of the enemy. The French Journals complain of the brev ity of the despatches from the seat of war. Even the Constitutional Semi-official Organ Says the despatches do not give very precise ideas of the position of either army. Algeria has been declared in a state of Beige. FROM BANGOR. Baxcor, Aug. IS. Democratic Convention. The Democratic State Convention which adjourned over from Portland, met here to day, lion. E. F. Pillsbuiv in the chair. A letter was received from Gen. Franklin Smith declining a nomination. Gen. Clias. W. Robert* of this city was then put in nom ination for Governor, receiving all but two uuKot G73 votes. Fite following resolutions reported by the Committee ou resolutions j were adopted. Resolved, That the National Administra tion has proved a failure; it has violated its , sacred pledges to the people; it promised them economy and faithfulness in national ! affairs, but it lias given them extravagance and corruption; it promised them a Republi can form ot governmmt, but in many of the stales it lias established a military despotism, trying thereby to intimidate the people there ot, and make them subservient to their wicked rule. iicamvcu, anal me orumnry expense oi the general ami state governments are swelled beyond all precedent and calculation by the enormous increase ot the number and salaries of their officers. In this we timl glaring Evidence of the existence of a system which is rapidly corrupting the public service, robbing labor of the bread it has earned, and endangering the liberties of the people. Ilesolved, That the act passed by the last legislature, which withdrew from the people of all tlie several school districts iri tills State tlie right to regulate the mode ol educating their children as they might deem best, is one of the many dangerous attempts to abridge the rights of our citizens, and abro gates a time-honored law and usage of this State. Ilesolved, That the tariff for protection is mainly for the benefit of the weulthy and the monopolists; that free trade is the right of tile people. Ilesolved, That we invite the thoughtful consideration of the people of Maine, with whom ship-building and freighting have herc tolore been successful pur-uits, to the fact that the seaboard ot Maine languishes and daily grows poorer, because of vexations, taxation, and the refusal of the Republican Administration to afford adequate legislation. Resolved, That while the Democratic party arc in in tavor of a judicious regulation by law for tlie sale of intoxicating liquors, they are opposed to the present prohibitory law and the restoration of a State Constab ulary . ' An Anti-Chinese resolution, and a resolu tion in confidence of their nominee were also adopted. The convention was quite full ami very harmonious. The nomination of Gen. Roberts was received with a salute. A ratification meeting was held at Xorom bega llall this evening. Philander J. Carleton of Camden was to day nominated as Democratic candidate for Representative to Congress from the 5th District. FROM NEW YORK. New York. Aug. 16. Enthusiastic Germans here freely offer beta of a thousand dollars that the Prussians will he in Paris before the end ut tlie month. F. Gallatidetin has a last evening Paris despatch to tlie Courier des Etats L'nis, r French paper in tiiis city, which says Napo leon was at Verdun and will surely make a short visit to Paris this week, lie will bo preceded by a lJulletin of Victory, and w ill receive the greatest ovation ever given a Sov ereign. FROM CONCORD. Cox cos I), X. II., Aug. 16. Suicide. An Irishman named Kamo, employed by Joseph 15. Walker as gardener, shot himself through the head this morning witli a re volver. He was found by tlie servat t girl about seven o'clock, lying with his head in a pool of blood. The ball entered his forehead but did not pass out and cannot be found.
