A gentleman related to us the other day a
eery curious but truthful circumstance, that
occurred in the northern portion of this Slate.
Two children, about three years of age,
strayed without permission to a pond covered
with ice that had not become sufficiently
frozen to be deemed safe to go upon it. Both
children were drowned and their bodies recov
ered. A clergyman residing about twenty
miles from the place of the accident, and be
ing acquainted with the parents of the de
ceased children, brought his own boy, six or
seven years old, to the scene of the disaster,
in the hope that it would have a salutary effect
upon him, nnd warn him against a like ex
posure to danger. The father left bis boy
upon the edge of the pond with his eyes
turned towards the place where the little ones
had the day before met their fate, while lie
should visit the house of the dead to comfort
the afflicted ones. He had been in the house
but a few minutes when the intelligence was
brought to him that his son had ventured
upon the ice, had broken through, and was
drowned. The story is a sad one, but true to
the letter.
The “Towns end Marino Kailway,” at
Bootlibay, so called because situated at tin
extreme “jumping off place” of the town, ha»
been in full operation only since the lGth o!
June, and has already had drawn upun it!
ways thirty-eight vessels. By those compe
tent to judge, it is called one of the best rail
ways in the State. The entire cost of tin
structure was $14,000. This includes a stean
engine of sixty horse power, modern machin
cry for drawing up vessels, and an immens'
cable chain which alone cost about $1800
Twenty cents per ton is the charge for takinj
vessels out of the water, and a specified sun
for the use of the ways each day spent in re
pairing. From twelve to twenty workmen ar
constantly employed at the yard at price
ranging from $2..r>0 to $4.00 per day. A car
pc liter's shop is now being erected, which wil
add much to the convenience of the yar..
which is already well adapted to the specia
work. Three vessels can be received at
time upon the ways. Some arc hauled up for
radical and important repairs, while others
are launched alter a day or two spent in scrap
ing and painting their bottoms. The railway
wax constructed and is now under the super
vision of Mr. Edward !■. Luring, a master
builder of long experience, formerly of I’rov

IMPORTANT FACTS !
For the Public.
NEW EASTERN DEPOT
FOR THK WORLD RENOWNED
Opposite the Post Office,
AUGUSTA, - - MAINE.
These Machines, by their simplicity, durability, and
the great ig^.gc of work lliey t \ecute,
have gained a rt putation truly
enviable.
The famous success of the Linger Mam factur
im» Company has stimulated many other compan
ies to pnl forth all their eii* rgies and t dent- to
produt e a sewing machine that would *• lip-e or
equal the Singer, but in every ea-e they have sig
mdlv laded, a? is plainly shown by the tact, that of
all the travelling agent-—•runnels or drummi is’’
—of other companies, none have the assurance to
. laim more than an equality with the Singer, even
upon any special class of work.
There are many sew ing machine?, now offered to
the public, that have their good point*, and are of
much assistance to the hoiiscwilc smd the industri*
ous seam-tress. Parties purchasing a sewing ina*
chine of any sort, lind the improvement on the old

Parties in quest of a sewing Machine should look
about them and b arn what machine is most exten
sively u-c l in lamilies, tailor shops, shoe factories,
I ami carriage factojics. It is an acknowledged fact,
i reely admitted by all sewing machine dealers, that
more than t>c>.thirds of all tht clothing worn in this
country by both *cj'es, ‘u httlu r custom made or ready
mad’ is actually manufactured upon THE SI.M.EK
Sewing Machine.
1 nese Machines are manufactured by one of the
oldest, stronge t. and most enterprising 1/ompati
ies that ha- over been engaged in the business in
the worli. Throughout tneir immense manufac
tories, which are kept in constant opera*ton -day
and night,” none but highly skilled mechanics are
employed. Newly improved machinery is em
ployed turning out cadi part finished t«» that me
chanical exactness, that every one is a perfect du
plicate of the other in size, weight and finish. All
new inventions are carefully examined and tested,
and if approved, are adopted, regardless of ex
pense. while the many impractical humbugs that
are patented, are left to grace some new wonder
and learn the purchaser when too late, that he has
• paid too dear for his whistle.” It should bo re
membered that the .Singer Manufacturing Com
pany has never made a poor Machine—from the
verv first twenty-odd years ago They never huv
editorial notices, or expend funds in “log-rolling”
at Pairs to gain medals or premiums.
They simply make their Machines as v aluable as
monev and science can perfect them—place them
hi their Sales Ilooms. and leave the public to find
out their virtues in their own way. H\ this straight
forward course they are now manuiaeturing about
lour hundred per dav, and at that rate, even, are
unable to supply the demand.
