(’OTIO.v-Sf.ed Oil. The manufacture
of thin oil in the United State* i« increas
ing enormously, and. according to the
Rural Carolinian, now reaches the high
figure of Gallons a week. It is
chiefly used for adulterating other oils, as
linseed, bird, olive and sperm. Its only
other uses are tor mixing putty, for which
it answer* better than any other known
oil, and for curing tobacco, in which it
lias replaced the bean oil formerly import
ed for that purpose. In a former number
of the Journal we referred to its mixture
with olive oil, and to the probability that
it may hereafter become a substitute for
that oil for culinary purposes. The crude
oil is of a very dark red color, which it
derives from a sort of resin, which can be
seen in black specks, in the kernel of the
seed, with the naked eye, and the pres
ence of this resin causes much trouble in
refining Th<j oil. A convention of the
manufacturers of cotton-seed oil is about
being hclil in New York city, to consider
various sulgects connected with the busi
ness, especially to find legitimate uses
for the oil. It is claimed that fifty per
cent, of it, mixed with linseed oil, is
better for painting than the pure linse. d,
as it dries :ut rapidly, and gives a coat
more elastic and less liable, to crack or
peel off. As a soap stock, it also does
well, when mixed with other oils, but
alone it does not harden readily on the ad
dition of salt as other oils do.—-Journal oj

THE KIDNEYS.
The Kidnevs are two in number, situated at the
upper part of the loin, surrounded by fat, and con
sisting of three parts, viz : the Anterior, the Interi
or, ami the Exterior.
The anterior absorbs. Interior consists of tissues
or veins, which serve as a deposit lor the urine and
convey it to the exterior. The exterior is a epn
iluetor a I ho, terminating in a single tube, nn<i called
tlie P re ter. Tlie ureter* are connected with the
bladder.
The bladder is composed of various coverings or
tissues, divided into parts, viz: the tpper, tlie
Lower, the Nervous, and the Mucous. Tlie upper
expels, the lower retains. Many have a desire to
urinate without the ability; others urinate without
the ability to retain. This frequently occurs in
children.
To cure these affections, we must bring into ac
tion the muscles, which are engaged in their vari
ous functions, if they are neglected, Gravel or
Dropsy may ensue.
The reader must also be made aware, that who
ever slight may be the attack, it is sure to affect the
bodily health and mental powers, as our flesh ami
blood are supported from these sources.
or Hhm matism.—Pain occurring in the
loinb is indicative of the above diseases. They oc
cur in persons disposed to acid stomach and chalky
concretions.
TnK Gravel.—The gravel ensues from neglect
or improper treatment of the kidneys. These or
gans being weak, the water is not expelled from the
bladder, but allowed to remain; it becomes fever
ish, and sediment forms. It is from this deposit
that the stone is formed, and gravel ensues.
Dropsy Is a collection of water in some parts of
the body, and hears different names, according to
the parts affected, viz: when generally diffused
over the body, it is called Anasarca; when of the
abdomen, Ascites; when of the chest, Ilydrotho
rax.
Treatment.—Helmbold’s highly concentrated
compound Extract Iluchu is decidedly one pf the
best remedies for diseases of the bladder, kidneys,
gravel, dropsical sw ellings, rheumatism, and gouty
affections. Under this head we have arranged
Dvsuria, or difficulty and pain in passing water,
Scanty Secretion, or small and frequent dischanres
of water; strangury, or stopping or water; Hema
turia, or bloody urine; Gout and Rheumatism or
the kidneys, without any change in quantity, but
increase in color, or dark water. It was always
highly recommended by the late Dr. Physick, in
these'affections.
This medicine increases the power of digestion, |
aird excites the absorbents into healthy exercise bv
which the watery or calcareous depositions, and all
unnatural enlargements, as well as pain and in
ti animation, are reduced, ami it is taken by men,
women, and children. Directions for uso and diet
accompany.

11. T. Hklmhold, Druggist— Dear Sin: I have
been u sufferer for upwards of twenty years with
gravel, bladder and kidney affec tions, during w hich
time 1 have used various medicinal preparations,
and been under the treatment of the most eminent
phvsiciuns. experiencing hut little relief.
Having seen your preparations extensively ad
vertised, 1 consulted my family physicau in regard
to using your Extract lliichu.
1 did this because I had used all kinds of adver
tised remedies and had found them worthless, and
some quite injurious; iu fact, 1 despaired of ever
getting well, and determined to use no remedies
hereafter unless 1 knew of the ingredients. It was
this that prompted me to use your remedy. As you
advertised that it was composed of buehu, cubebs
and juniper berries, it occurred to me and my phys
ician as un excellent combination ; and with Ins ad
..... u» *• vecminstiiin of tlie article jcncl con
sulting*again'with the druggist, I concluded to try
it. I commenced to use it about eight months ago,
at w hich time 1 w as routined lo my room.
From the llrst lmttle I wai^tstonlshed at the ben
cflcial effect, ami after using it three weeks was
aide to walk out. I felt much like w riting to you a
full statement of mv case at the time, hut thought
luy Improvement might only be temporary, and
therefore concluded to defer, and nee it it would
effect a perfect cure knowing then it would he ol
greater value to you and more satisfactory to me.
1 am now able to report that a cure is effected,
after using the remedy for live months.
I have not used any now for three months, and
(eci as well in all respects as I ever did.
Your Hurhu being devoid of any unpleasant taste
nn*l odor, a nice tome and invigoratorof the system,
I do not mean to la- without it whenever occasion
may require its use in such uffcctions.

TO PHYSICIANS.
New Yoke, August 15th, 1808.
Allow me to call your attention to my PREPAR
ATION OF COMPOUND EXTRACT BUCHU.
The component parts are BUCHU, Lusu Leaf
CUBEBS, JUNIPER BERRIES.
Mode of Preparation.—Bnchu, in vacuo.
Juniper Berries, by distillation, to form a line gin.
Cubebs extracted by displacment with spirits ob
tained from Juniper Berries; very little sugar is
used, and a small proportion of spirit. It is more
palatable than any now In use.
Bucbu, as prepared by Druggists, is of a dark
color. It is a plant that emits its fragrance; the
action of aflame destroys this (its active principle),
leaving a dark and glutinous decoction. Aline is
the color ot ingredients. The Bnchu in my prepar
ation predominates; the smallest quantity of the
oiher ingredients arc added, to prevent fermenta
tion; upon inspection, it will lie found not to be a
Tincture, as made In Pharmacopoea, nor is it a
Syrup—and therefore run be used in rases where
fever or inflammation exists. In this, you have the
knowledge of the Ingredients and the mode of pre
paration.
Hoping that you will favor it with a trial, and
that upon Inspection it will meet with your appro
